The Ultimate Benz?
So, in your opinion, which is the best Mercedes Benz out of the normal ones? (excluding rare oddities like the CLK-GTR for instance)
For me, it simply must be the SL65 AMG. I want one very, very badly - in black of course! :D In the last week, I've seen the same black SL65 AMG twice, and the second time it was being driven flat-out. :yikes: It is unbelievable something so heavy can accelerate so quickly. At first I thought, oh yeah, an SL55 AMG, but the sound was very different, and it was a lot faster. Can someone send me AUD$500,000 please. :D That will leave enough left over to pay for all the rear tyres that will be needed to keep up with 1000Nm of torque! ;) |
Since the E-Class got all the S-Class gadgets I would say a full spec E55T would be a nice fast transport for the family.
After looking at the German MB site it seems that the AMG 65 is not sold in Germany, or do you have to order these directly from AMG ? |
I think the 65 is something of a special order thing, or only for specific markets.
There is also an S65 AMG, along with the SL65 AMG. The S65 is based on the long-wheelbase S-Class. |
Yes I know the S65 must be insane.
Seems the 65 is only available overseas and not in Europe  Have you seen Jeremy Clarkson test the CLS55 on Topgear? Gave them a chance to make fun of ze Germanz again, about "20.000 handbuild quality engines by AMG every year" |
The extra weight of the S65 apparently calms it down a little bit, in comparison to the hyperactive SL65. One good description of it was:
"manoeuvering at low speeds is like trying to water planter-boxes with a fire hose" Reportedly some AMG customers looked at the SL55 AMG and asked did AMG have anything better. :) So AMG responded with 450kW and 1000Nm. The comparisons show the very stark difference: SL55 AMG: 368kW@6100rpm 700Nm@2650rpm 5.5L Supercharged V8 SL65 AMG: 450kW@4800rpm 1000Nm@2000-4000rpm 6.0L Biturbo V12 In fact, at just 1500rpm, it is already making 130Nm more torque than the SL55's best output. At 1000rpm (just 200 above idle), it has the same torque output as the old M120 6.0 litre DOHC V12 engine! |
I have not seen the AMG version of the CLS, but that would probably be for me...unless I was feeling more conservative that day, then it would be the E55. :)
...but a Commodore with 75K in engine mods would be just as fast, and likely nicer - so its a tuff choice ;) |
Hehehe. ^_^
I've also not seen the CLS55 AMG. |
Found it.
No surprises, same specs as the E55, but it looks very nice indeed. :) http://216.77.188.54/coDataImages/p/...5-amg-s-st.jpg http://216.77.188.54/coDataImages/p/...amg-r3q-st.jpg |
Hmm, interesting.. I'm still not sure about the styling. :?
I guess this is more my style: http://www.gdtm.ru/MBimages/SL65amg-R230-1.htm http://www.gdtm.ru/MBimages/SL65amg-R230-2.htm http://www.gdtm.ru/MBimages/SL65amg-R230-4.htm http://www.gdtm.ru/MBimages/SL65amg-R230-5.htm It is just so over the top in every way. But I don't think the S65 is my style, especially not an S65 in black. Everyone would think you are some gangster. ^_^ Only problem I read about with the SL65 seems to be that the SL65's rear tyres are hugely overwhelmed by such gigantic torque. |
I have seen several CLS and most of them were AMGs. They look kind of nice but not practical enough.
The SL I dont like that much no matter how much hp it has, if I want a sportcar I would buy a Porsche or Ferrari. E55T it is for me. http://mitglied.lycos.de/xrfez/Pics/...-Class-061.jpg |
If BMW develops an M5 station wagon, Benz might just do an E65T. ;) 450kW should be enough to move the groceries. ;)
Although Brabus already does one, sort of. Except it has 640hp and 1026Nm, and the top speed stops at 340km/hr. I've also seen the E55T, and I do like it. It was at a motorshow, and this lady was seriously looking at it with her kids, with an intention of buying it. :) Just the thing to get the kids to school in a real hurry. |
M5 station wagon, nah that still would not look right. :eyecrazy:
German manufacturers should just cut the crap and remove that idiotic 250kmh limiter again, why have a 500+ hp car and not showing it. Or why not set the limiter to 320kmh/200 mph  |
I wonder about that limiter. I read in the AM&S speed test at the Nardo speed-bowl one year they got the SL55 to do 326km/hr. And that was achieved at night.
And then you look at the SL65/CL65/S65 and see the 360km/hr speedometre, and wonder what it could achieve.. An M5 station wagon though has the rather unexpected benefit that the station wagon body makes the ugly back look better. ;) |
I could go for an E55 wagon as well.
An M5 wagon would be tempting mechanically, but BMW turned off the main road and seems lost in the countryside of bad styling lately. Maybe if I could get the V10 in the previous body style? For some reason the SL has ver really hooked me, and I'm not sure why. Maybe for now it is my stage of life - like how a convertible looks a little silly with baby seats poking up in the side profile. :D |

When I see that, I think of an unsuspecting housewife or dentist accidentally flinging the car into a ditch while pulling away from a stoplight in the rain. :D
I kmow that these cars are equipped with the best traction and braking controls on earth, but still... From the previously mentioned article: Picture any given car doing a burnout, and you'll probably imagine a high-revving engine as the soundtrack. The SL65 will incinerate its rear tires while turning 2000 rpm. Very disconcerting, that. All the way from 2000 to 3000 rpm, the hand-built V-12 hammers the pathetically inadequate 285-section-width rubber with 738 lb-ft of torque. That amount of torque isn't uncommon-in fact, Mercedes itself makes another engine that cranks out 700 lb-ft. But that one goes in school buses. The SL65's rear tires aren't just bringing a knife to a gun fight, they're bringing a pair of left-handed safety scissors to a nuclear war. |
Most modern Benz's just don't do it for me. I'm not saying they're not nice cars, but they're not something i'd buy if I had the money. I do like the current SL's, but i'd rather have several mid priced cars (Audi S4, a Lotus Elise, and a couple of classic sports cars) than one expensive car.
Anyway, my list of ultimate Benz's would be the 300SL Gullwing, followed by the SL65 AMG. |
KyzrSoze: Hehe, I saw that one. 2 tonne 5 speed automatic with all the luxuries in the world SL65 turns up at the drag-racing and beats-up everything else. ;)
SL65 with traction controls is pretty timid. I've seen one going quickly (starting off from low speed) and it didn't even look like it was going to do anything else but grip the road and go forward very quickly. Very amazing to see though. It's all part of the attraction. You might not ever use 1000Nm all the time, or 450kW (600hp) but it is nice to know that it is there. The V12 Biturbo badge IMO also wins respect, much like the old 450 SEL 6.9 did (and still does) with its huge 6.9L engine. |
From what I understand the SL55 is a more nimble car, and there is always Brabus tuning, whch would make me want a SL55 tuned by Brabus....
|
For me it is the SLR (if it counts that is). Otherwise I'm with Chris and have to go with the mighty SL65 AMG. How could anyone not like a 604 hp beast with a folding hardtop? :p
|
It'd be better if the top stayed fixed and it was about 200kg's lighter, I don't need Satnav or half a doen other features it has, not till I'm older at least...
