I promised you to write some review about World Racing, so I forced myself to close the game and take a short rest and tell you what I think about this game.
Here are some thoughts good and bad in no specific order :)
- Some thing I also seen in the demo, that when you start a game your controller defaults back to keyboard and you have to select wheel every time when you continue your game. This is a very annoying bug and needs to be fixed pronto. All the other settings are stored just fine, so you usually just have to setup your stuff once then forget about it.
- The annoying drive through trees is still there, and is not possible to fix. It is quite sad but as long as you drive the race on the track (as you should) you will not have any contact with trees anyway. There are enough elements at the side of the track that will slow you down and that will stop you (crash bang boom).
- If you thought there are a lot of planes in the Demo Alps scenario, well they are everywhere, sometimes they are real distracting, and I wish there would be a way to disable this kiddie-eye candy.
- The setup is very limited and as strange as in the demo.
- I did play for about 2 hours without any break, I did turn down the in game music (it is not bad but I prefer just the engine), I did listen to the CD on my stereo, but completely forgot to restart it after it stopped, completely forgot pretty much everything around me once I started to get into the game.
- The first few missions are rather slow, you start with the slowest available cars and all of them are CDI Diesels and they are rather slow going, I felt like I was driving my real car LOL
- As seen in the Demo, the only way to go is 100% Sim seting to make it an ok Game, forget about Arcade mode or even 50/50 that’s maybe funny when you drive freeride off-road, but for the race 100% is great.
- I did turn that direction arrow off in the Demo after doing the same track several times, but turned it back on in the game as all the race tracks are quite twisted (so far). There is no track where you can do all corners at full speed, there is rather quite a lot of 2nd gear corners, and quite a bit of shifting up/down necessary.
- I did not expect to win the first race, but I certainly did not expect to LOSE it and finish LAST !!! The AIs are nothing like in PU where you would overtake them in the first corner and finish minutes ahead of them. The AIs in this game will push you from start to finish. It is tough to overtake them in the first place, once you are ahead (which can take some laps) make one mistake and they are again ahead of you.
- The dynamic strength of the AIs is cool, they adjust their strength on your driving. So that means when you do a great race the next race will be even tougher as they will push you even harder. If you screw up the next race will be a bit easier You can disable that and set the opponents strength manually but I would say let it on, its great. In the demo this was not that noticeable.
- I still haven’t figured out how the scoring system works, if you drive clean, don’t shorten, don’t make errors, do slides you will get a higher rating even if you don’t finish first.
- I haven’t found the freeride option yet, I guess you have to finish all the missions first before you can take anycar anywhere :)
- After 2 hours of playing the “statistics” tell me that I finished 6 % of the game.
- The picking of the right car also seems important, the car with the highest top speed may not be the best if you have to accelerate a lot from low speeds and don’t reach top speed at all.
- It has weather that is set by random, 4 wheel drive cars have an advantage then. Also when the track is wet you cannot see too good because of the spray. No snowfall, what a shame :)
- The tracks seem very interesting and the statistic says I driven 10 of 120 so far.
- So far I have not driven any Oldies, just the latest and mostly slowest powered by Diesel :) and some 4 cylinder CLK/SLK :)
- All cars handle very different, I am especially surprised how great the G-Class handles, wonder if that is real. Also I did not know that the A-class slides so nicely :)
- Best view is the hood cam, the bumper cam is way to low. With the hood you can also see where the car is pointing, cool when doing a slide :) The incar cam looks very nice but I just use that in freeride maybe, not for racing.
- I did not see some sort of track records page, does not seem to have that, or it is hidden somewhere in the strange menu. Maybe I should have a look at the manual.
- Who liked to do Evolution mode in PU will love this game. No idea how the multiplayer mode will be like, but I fear that it will not have stats and so the fun factor may be limited.
Well enough for now, if you have questions do ask. I will try to make some spectacular screenshots and post them later.

Ok I drove some more races, and something happened that I thought will happen, there is a new car available the S320 CDI and it is by far he most powerfull, best handling (of the ones that are available) and when I can use it I use it, there is no joy in using the slower less powerfull cars. I think it is bad that they made it so that you can pick cars from an available pool, and not restricted the track/car combos to specific cars while doing the missions.

Shame about the wheel select thingy.. that sucks, big-time!!!!
Do you have to start again from scratch (I hope not - 'cos I saw a save facility in the Demo)?
You think the Oldies are coming soon in the menu? :)))))))))))))

hey Hank,
no I just have to go into the options when I continue the game, and change keyboard to wheel, all the settings for the buttons are still stored correct, but it defaults back to keyboard whenever you close/restart the game.
It is no biggy just very annoying

The 111 is a fantastic car shame they never build it, it drifts like insane, good fun, but to drive it fast better brake and stay on the racingline :D
Its hard to make screenshots with ALT PrntScreen, I think I need a better program, anybody know one ? Hypersnap ?
Just seen that the 111 inside picture looks real dark, it looks very nice and bright in the game, the screenshot is very dark

What do you think of the collision physics?
FeZ
09-20-2003, 01:16 AM
Thanks for the link for the capture progi, I will give that a try -^
It is a real shame that the replays cannot be saved and rewatched. I did a 20 km (1 lap 20 km !!!) race with the 300 SL Roadster against Gullwings and 280SL Pagode, that was intense. After that race my hands were shaking, all cars finished within 10 seconds of each other, so there was no time to relax, well maybe just on that long straight were the SL reached 210 km/h
BB: The collision is rather good, the AIs are agressive but fair. When you block them they brake rather than run into you. They will try to stay on the racingline, so it is easy to overtake them on the inside, but they will most likely outperform you when going out of the turn again. It looks like that the more unfair you drive the more agressive they get, but I am not sure about that.
The damage is very poor, You can crash into a wall at 200+ km/h (real live fatal crash, even a Mercedes will look like a crushed can of coke) and you only have 10% damage and can drive on without any problem. Only when the damage climbs above 50% you start to feel that the car is not going so well anymore. You have to trash it intentionally to get above 50% once it climbs over 80% you will have troubles getting the car going and reach speed. You can also hear the difference and the engine/gearbox sound defect. Dunno what happens at 100%, I guess the car will stop, but I never managed to trash it that bad, even after falling down a mountain and overturning 20 times.

I've only recently downloaded the demo version of MBWR and I have to say it's not too bad.
Nice graphics, lots of 'eye candy' as Fez put it, with Sail planes and various other things zooming (well, not exactly zooming) around in the sky.
The only real problem I had was that the steering seemed to suck, not much, just a tiny bit, but that may be due to my controller.
One thing I did find out was that it supports force feedback, which is interesting to see in a demo.
If the full game is anywhere near as nice as the demo, I'd say it would be a 'must have' driving game, much the same as MC II is ;)

I dont really know what that is for, if they want to make a real driving game, that feels real it should also look real. I have no problem with a helicopter flying around somewhere, but on the Nevada map, you have copters, planes, stealth bombers and UFO's zoom around. I wonder who will like stuff like that, not even my daughter thought its "cool"

Try to reconfigure all the controls, and disable the default deadzone of 10%. Steering works very well for me. The FF is good, especially in a tailhappy car the drifting feels sensational, when the wheel gets very light, and then suddenly "bites" again.

Just took a freeride around the city map in a S-Class 400 CDI
The sound was very low so I turned up the speakers. Then I chose the 300 SL Gullwing and my ears nearly fell of :)
What was I thinking, its an S-Class, one of the best and most refined cars in the world, you are not supposed to hear any engine noise :)
One thing that sucks, and it sucks real bad, there is absolutely no traffic in freeride, not a single car on the whole map. To blast through a deserted city is not really funny :nono:

In the game it looks real nice, but you cannot really see much difference in the captures (the 300SL ones), maybe the JPG quality is set too low.

Hey Hank,
I could not wait some more days to see the racers, so I used a cheat profile to unlock all cars :)
Check out the picture folder above mentioned, to see some fine W196, W125, W154.
And especially for chris I did some nice scenic pictures of the SLR in Australia & the CLKGTR in Japan -^ Absolute fantastic cars, with great power and also powerful brakes, something that cannot be said of the above oldie racers.
Still not even the simplest of websites, man am I a lazy bum.
There are far to little oldies in that game, but I already mentioned this when the carlist for the game came out months ago.
Also I remember seeing a screenshot of an old heavy S-Class Coupe (well the series before the recent one) that is not in the game ? Please let there be an Oldies-Addon soon :)
Splash maybe we can do a petition to include the Sprinter in an Addon :) After seeing the Sprinter do the Nurburgring I want to have one for this game :D And yes do get a new system !!!
I did the screenshots with the maximum JPG settings but they turned out to be 700kb each, so I had to compress them down to reasonable sizes.
Have fun

Some more topspeed pictures added,
That 250kmh restriction on the fast cars is so lame :), also very poor the SL55 AMG that should do 315kmh only reaches 280...maybe a bug.
The 300SL is doing nicely, close to the advertised 235 km/h -^
That C-Class racer is also very nice, unlike all the standard C-class cars :)

Auto Motor und Sport managed to achieve in the SL55 AMG (at night) on the Nardo speed bowl in Italy 326km/hr!
So much for 250km/hr speed limits.
That C-Class is one of the ITC things (international touring cars). They were 2.5 litre V6, used pneumatic valves, and had about 373kW@11,500rpm. Apparently you should always keep the engine in those spinning at 5000+rpm, even at a stand-still.
The things had just about every automated stopping, and accelerating aid you could imagine. Even some air-intakes had covers which opened and closed automatically! The gearbox could even upshift automatically, if needed.
And ITC brake discs are the size of normal cars wheels even!
The downside? The cost! They cost millions of dollars to run.
FeZ
09-21-2003, 04:56 AM
Yes I think the SL55 AMG speed may be a bug, I read about it on the synetic forum.
That C-Class may be a different one than you think of, its a DTM car (DTM=German Touring Car Championship)
I also bought the game and I'm positively impressed like you are :) The only "problem" I had with the full game is that I need to set it at 800x600x16 to stay above 20-25FPS, while in the demo it was 1024x768x32 and with higher FPS...
- Some thing I also seen in the demo, that when you start a game your controller defaults back to keyboard and you have to select wheel every time when you continue your game. Not happening to me, neither in the demo nor in the full game
- The annoying drive through trees is still there, and is not possible to fix. It is quite sad but as long as you drive the race on the track (as you should) you will not have any contact with trees anyway. Yes, but it's highly annoying in the "rally" races with the G500 ;)
No idea how the multiplayer mode will be like, but I fear that it will not have stats and so the fun factor may be limited. To me, it doesn't matter if there'll be no statistics....it's enough if the MP is not as disastrous as Synetics' previous title: Mercedes Benz Truck Racing! :( I loved that game, but MP is a real pain! I'm still playing it with 2-4 friends once every two weeks, but sometimes we just can't play online....too many bugs!
PS: for all the other points you mentioned, I fully agree with your review!

sad but true, but in a review they mentioned that the maps have up to 5000 trees so it was not possible to add collision

Hi FeZ, all :shake:
First, I'd like to thank you for all interest you generated among us and for efforts to give us reports, hints and screen-shots. -^

In return for your efforts I made small web page template and thumb-nails for your currently stored pictures. Just extract ZIP into temporary folder, use Notepad to adjust texts and upload contents (including subfolders) to your /xrfez/ folder on your website.
Due to space limit of 100 KB for attachments here, only about 20 thumbnails are includes. All of them are cca 270 KB long. I have them ready, just PM me how and where to deliver. :)
Then, if MBWR has some resemblance with their old N.I.C.E 2 tittle, perhaps the "trees" problem can be remedied.
Namely, that game has so called "Arcade" mode, where (only there) this 'feature' can be turned ON/OFF.
"Arcade" / "Options" : Collision with trees : ON/OFF
This settings stays in effect even within the 2nd - Standard mode. In this mode there is no provision to change it.
Beside the most awful menu system I ever saw that game was great. On my not so top PC the frame rate is 85 fps all the time :)
I reinstalled the game just to dig-out this setting, so I hope it will be of some use :dreamin:

About the tree settings. The tree-collision is not in the game. One of the programmers said it was not possible to add collision to all the thousands of elements on the huge maps.
The setup screens look the same in the Final and the Demo, and changing Arcade/Sim does not give you any more available settings.
oh and  speedy,
Nice screenies -^
Looks like we already have some people ready to test the Multiplayer mode when it comes out ^_^
Hey Tox
Yes the rearview mirror was also in the Demo, but I think it was disabled by default ??? I just think the mirror is a must have, as it helps alot to stay ahead of the AIs in showing you what side to block :)

Horrid paper review:-
Thursday September 18, 2003
The Guardian
World Racing
PC, £19.99 TDK **
At £19.99, World Racing is a tenner cheaper than most new release PC games. Sadly, you get what you pay for. World Racing is a bog-standard racer, recommended only to die-hard Mercedes fans. Featuring off- as well as on-road tracks, the main attraction is the choice of motor. The majority of Mercedes' current production line are available to drive, as well as a stack of classic and racing cars, but the difference between most of the vehicles is negligible.
Going off-road doesn't affect your drive as much as it should, with rivers and trees less of a barrier than expected. The AI of your competitors veers from driving school to Schumacher, with little in between. The graphics are pretty good. The tracks are big and varied, and the countryside offers tempting exploration.

Great Hank & Sue, more players -^
The W154 is so fantastic to drive, pure joy.
Let me tell you this one more time, if you liked Evolution mode in NFS PU, you will love WR. It has its shortcomings but it is the only game that comes close to NFS PU for what we liked PU for.
There are some annoying things, but the driving is NOT the weak spot
If you like setting up cars and customizing it, forget it no setup at all (just color, numberplates and driver)
If you like to drive every corner with just lifting the accelerator a bit forget it, you will need a working brake pedal for this one.
If you like to play just the fastest possible car, forget it you also have to drive very slow very bad handling cars.
If you like to easily beat the Opponents, forget it, or set opponent strength to 40% :)
I wonder what version this Greg Howson tested ? I guess Greg Howson voted for NFS HP2 as "Best Game of the Year" :)
EDIT: Just saw that the picture links are not working anymore, need to fix that

lest hope so, if they don't do that the game is doom't to die, and for online racing a non colision patch will also be nice, because i have seen this with dtm racer nobody care's if there is a colision the only thing they whant to do is winning at every cost  , so if tdk keep there promise and they lissing to the player we have a new online racer and you can say it is the following up of nfbshp or hs, so keep your fingers cross ;)

There is a link to something called"Big Block" and a pic of what looks like an early 70's Cuda or Challenger. One question to the lucky ones who have the game; How do the other"Scenarios compare with the one in the demo??Are they just as big and just as much fun? Less so? Better? I gots to know! :D
EDIT: Tom from TDK just posted over at NFBS that the North American release date is still not decided, but it will be sold for $25-29 USD as TDK are trying for a "breakthrough" to NA market.
Also he said that they are releasing a d/l Maclaren SLR,some new C Class cars and a new "Scenario" F1 Hockenhiemring",and tweaked AI and driving model. Sorry again for the lack of linkage, but it's a mile long! ^_^

Well, in the same thread at NFBS they mention a couple of websites that are already importing the game in the US:
shop.game.net (http://shop.game.net/ViewProduct.aspx?cat=10357&mid=322078) for 19,99 GB£ + 3.95£ for shipping to U.S.

Hi to all of you !
I was invited to pop by and be available for a chat or to answer questions about MBWR...a title Juergen from Synetic and I have started 3 years ago...Thanks god, it is ready now.
Some of you already have the game, some of you played the demo.
I read all your comments and I am impressed about the profesionality you review and descibe MBWR...hope journalists would be able to do the same job.
US release is depending on TDK Mediactive US and Take 2 who baught TDK M US...they have the samples to review.
Australia : Stock is on the way to Aussiland. I can check up after my vacation next week where to buy it.
Price : 29.95 Euro or $ or 19.95 GBP...why so cheap ? We want to break through with this title in the world to pave the way for WRII that we just started.
The Xbox version has been released in US and Europe in MArch...we changed a lot for the PC version taking into account the user comments from Areaxbox in Germany, Teamxbox US and Granturismo.com from US.
AI has changed, driving model and some other stuff you feel but dont see. Hockenheim Ring has been added to the PC version as well as the McLaren SLR first and exclusive with the launch of the car for the 12th Sept.
A cheat to unlock all cars is "full house"
I will show up to check this board every day or two.
If you have problems installing or running the game pls visit the www.synetic.de forum for MBWR. English is no problem and you get help if possible.
Multiplayer is in progress...download cars are available in October. Maps for the scenarios for download are available right now. Just use the "update" link and you get the the page where all stuff is offered.

Greetings  :shake: Tom from TKD thanks for popping in to see us all here, and congratulations on producing MBWR it is a fantastic game.
The promise of the online multiplayer element of this game is what really attracted me to it.
Are you familiar with how multiplayer works in NFSPU?
It would be brilliant if MBWR could work in a similar fashion with a lobby to meet and greet fellow racers and then separate pits to race in.
Many of us are also rather keen to have statistics some what along the lines of these here DRStats (http://www.deadlineracers.net/cgi-bin/nfs5/nfs5stats.cgi?lang=eng) . Do you think this will be possible for MBWR?
The cars in MBWR are very beautiful and the colour selection for them is nice but a good mod to have would be the ability to change the cars colour to what ever the player chooses. Could this be done? I am rather sad but I do love pink cars! ^_^
Many thanks Tom and please pass on our best wishes to Juergen and all at the Synetic team you have done a marvelous job.

hehe, yepp, thats norway allright! Probably why i ordered my copy from www.play.com ,i usually order most of my stuff from play(or other online sites in GB) nowadays, so much cheaper! And since the game cost from play aprox 190 n.kr its duty free (if over 200 n.kr its becomes more expensive) :D I guess in norway when it comes out christmas 2004 that it will cost aprox 500 n.kr, thats over twice as much....
Okei no more time now, gotta get back and try my new 600 S :D
btw:
@ Geezr: yes, many of the tracks are just as big and nice as the track in the demo. There is also some very long races were you race over almost the whole demo track (on the roads that is :) ). I personally like the races in the city were u have to slide around 90 degree turns :HB:. But there is also tracks were u cant drive so much "free style", like the race tracks, but they are still very fun to race on.

Tom, I must say that you've impressed me with your arrival alone. I'm still playing the demo and trying to decide if I will buy the game or not (it's good, but I'm thinking no for now), but to see that TDK is activley involved in outreach gives me the impression of a game that will be refined and supported rather than left to fend for itself (a very welcome thing around here).

Super thread guys and um... Sue! :D and hi all :)
I got the game on monday and wasnt playing anything else then.
To be honest, I've never thought that WR could become a fail-buy as RaceDriver or HP2, I already love the game and I cant wait for the Multiplayer-mode too.
Right Tom, the journalists are doing bad jobs heh! The last test I did read about WR before I got the game did disappoint me a bit but I didnt believe them because from N.I.C.E 2 I know how Synetic is doing its job, it was fun pure.
I did start my first mission with the A-class, graphics were fantastic and I was wondering how many fps I get with my Geforce3 ti, only at the city-track I get problems while driving into the town where you can see the whole skyline, I am wondering whether it is a CPU-matter because of the many poligons or a graphics-card-matter because of something else, I hope the 2nd matter because it says optimum is 1,6 GHz and I have 2,8 hmm well, new graphics-card will come at christmas then I will see it anyway.
Ok, at first the bad acceleration didnt surprise me but I was already wondering why the car stays in 2nd gear for such a long time, a 100PS-car should rotate a bit faster trough the 1st and 2nd gear but to that a bit later. When I reached the first corner I did brake way too late because it seemed to be so slow but it's an A-class hehe, my A-class's ass did almost overtake me but it was no problem to handle this situation because the steering reacted in exactly that kind as I thought it would (in opposite to RaceDriver and HP2 where you cant drive even with a steering-wheel and even after some practise) and as I heared the screetching of my tires with such a nice sound and as I read "very good drift" then I knew this is my new home! :D
I think there are 6 stairs: cool drift, good drift, very good drift, perfect drift, excellent drift and fantastic drift, yesterday I managed to do a fantastic drift for the first and only time so far hehe I find it kool that the game evaluates the drifts always right, no bugs so far. I would even say WR is the first game where you can drift controllable and I love that, I dont say that it is totally realistically all the time but I say I love it, I prefer a bit unrealism to 100% realism when I can drift, slide and all that how I want it even if I am drunked and if I am no real Race-driver :)
Good, now to the gear-thing, that with the A-Class wasnt that bad but later with the 200PS C and E-Class for example it did rather disappoint me that I only reach 110 km/h while driving up a mountain and that in second gear, first such cars will not reach 110 km/h in 2nd gear, second they would rather reach 160 easily but with 3rd and 4th gear so I thought "hmm if that is all what I get with 200PS then the CLK GTR or the SLR will be only so so..."
That was while driving up a mountain but on a flat straight too, if one watches the speedometer then one can see that the acceleration is quite ok but if one does only look on the road and listening to the engine that one could almost fall asleep and that shouldnt be when one is driving a 200PS car.
Now where I was driving the CLK DTM and GTR now even I am satisfied, sometimes it's even too fast for me for example in the city but I love it hehe.
What else can I say to this game? It's just as I was hoping it would be...56% done...
What surprised me very much too is the loading-time, the huge terrain, all the poligons and textures are loaded in a few secs, how is that possible?
The engine-sounds are a bit too arcade-wise but the stronger cars are sounding quite nice and "hotmaking"
I love the old F1 merci, it's like driving on ice :)
I love the speed-feeling, 250km/h are looking fast and the road becomes narrow, damn I wanna race now.
In a game-magacine they said it's far away from a simulation but I dont think so, if one thinks that there was never a real simulation in the genre "road-track-race-game", it never was or? was there one? no not that I would know, so seen WR simply cant be a simulation, isnt it sad? real simulations were always something for race-track-games but why actually? racing is racing if on a race-track or on a road. But I'm glad, all what WR needs for beeing a real simulation are setups for the race-cars and a powerful damage-model where you can notice the damage drivewise but all in all it IS a simulation.
The magacine said further that the AI's are too dumb, well, that is their problem if they crash lol mainthing is that they arent unbeatable like in RaceDriver, on a road-track which I dont know yet I may not crash twice if I want win but on a race-track they have no chance at least in a rather fast race with the GTRs, I managed to be 14 seconds ahead yesterday and that after the first lap, at the end after 6 laps I did lead with 1 minutesomething...hmhmhm I think I better go now and drink a coffee and will race then again :D
I love that game, all I worry about is how the hell will I ever learn 100something tracks with thousands of curves and corners ^_^ but thats good...
Tom, I'm praying for a good Multiplayer-mode with stats ;)

Hi Baritone
The demo is a just a little piece of the cake...but physics etc. is like this full game. We did give a rather big demo to the public I belive. It is one complete landscape plus cars.
The full game has around 60 hours of gameplay to the end. The developers are playing 40 hours to get everything done. Once you reach the targhet of the game = driver number 1 = you can get additional rights to build your own championships and put your favorite missions togehter and play it again.

Hi Sebi
MBWR is GFX or GraKa driven not CPU driven... The best results you get with a better GFX Card. We wanted to give people with small cards like Gforce 4 MX the chance to play MBWR and it was hard stuff for Michael, the engine progger to get this target done.
Pls, if you have some tech quests pls visit the Synetic page and they will answer immy... Let them know Tom sends you :=)))

Hi There Tom,
I too am somewhat in the Category of Baritone Black about the game...
I love the demo, and since the game hasn't been released here in the US, I am thinking of purchasing it from a website that can ship it to the US…
I have a problem on that, and that is the price…. I don’t know what the price will be here in the US, and if it cheaper here than importing it in, then I don’t mind the wait as long as the game is released soon in a reasonable amount of time……….
So if you can, would it is possible for you to find out what the status of the Game is in the US, and possible what the price will be that TKD is hoping to market the game here?
Thank You

Greetings Sebi what a wonderful post you made, glad to see you too are enjoying this fab game.
Thank you and congrats to your title Driver No. 1 Sue :)
I gave it a try and did set the level for the AI's strenght to "dynamic" and I have to say...I lost my first race then :")
I think I will set it to fix at 95% instead of 80% what I had earlier, the dynamic thingy is simply too extreme or I only cant drive the Gullwing, no idea. It's really kool that you can change the AI's strenght anytime you want to do so.
I just took a look in the World Racing-folder and did stumble over 2 folders named "ReplayRec" and "Replays" so Tom, could you please tell us what they are for? How can one record and play a Replay or will it come later via patch?

And they actually offer a whacko paint-scheme like that on some production model Benz cars too!
The R230 series SL (that stunning thing with the folding metal hard-top, and some lovely V8 and V12 engines, along with a base 3.7 V6) is one of them, surprisingly. It's the sort of car you'd more normally expect in reserved tones, like the metallic silver, and dark red hues, for instance.
I can hardly wait for this game to get to Australia. Hopefully we'll here from Tom soon, and he can tell us where to go to get it.

Funny that so little of the excitement around here is about NFS, especially with a new one coming out.
The colision still doesn't feel quite right to me. It seems tha twhen the side of one car makes contact with another, the car that has its rear half touched accelerates and the car that has its front half touched decellerates, regardless of contact angle or relative motion. That's how it reminds me of SEGA GT. Of course, this won't be nearly as much of a problem in MBWR, which doesn't have the bumping and grinding of NFS.

It will I think give you "Fantastic Drift" rating whenever you manage to do a 360° spin, say at about 70km/hr..
I managed it once in the twin-engined A190.. Next time I tried it I got "extreme driving error".

Hi Corrado m8ty! What kind of frame rates are U getting @ 800x600x16? on mine,I'm only getting in the mid 20's in a race, but almost double when I watch the replay.Unfortunately,I'm getting a bit of audio crackling, especially at the start of any Alps race.Accoring to the readme, this is a low frame rate issue, and they suggest lowering the res. or lowering view distance to remedy.I tried the same res as U( 1024x768x16) but now view distance is LOW.The sound issue seems to be much better, and surprisingly, the LOW view distance doesn't seem to affect the way the scenes are rendered very much. The only thing i noticed was all the cows in the fields pop in at the last second now.The scenery, tho,is still filling in same as before.

I keep playing the demo, and liking it more and more. Maybe I won't sit this one out after all. If I can get a solution to the dashboard animation problem, I'll be almost sold.

That's something to do with video cards, I think, or Direct X maybe? You should ask Synetic on their forum at www.synetic.de
I have no troubles with dash animation troubles on my PC.
And I admit, I'm stunned at how this thing runs at high detail on my Athlon XP1800+ computer, with 512mb ram, and GF4 Ti4200 video card. It runs well with smooth frame rates. Very surprising.

Where on the forum do I ask, and in English or German?
My computer is brand new, with a 2.6 GHz and a Geforce 4. It rather upsets me that something doesn't run properly on it.

Hope that works for you, otherwise, go to www.synetic.de then click on [Pinboard] and then [Hauptforum]
To write a new topic, click the [Neuen Beitrag Schreiben] link on top. The forum is rather chaotic, a bit like the Game menu ;)
Have you tried the Demo Patch 222, and checked the readme ?
I would do that before writing there, some of the regulars seem a bit childish and may flame you for posting "the same stupid question again and again"

Mark U gotta get this game Bro! I just got my copy today from Gogamer.com,as there's no sign of MBWR on the retail horizon yet in North America. Now,i've got it running @ 1024x768x16,in fullscreen mode, and according to fraps,im getting anywhere from 30-50 fps, which is enough for smooth gameplay. One thing I did which helped, was to reduce the view distance to LOW. Default is MED. Unlike PU.where a low view distance would have scenery popping in as U drive, the scenery in WR seems all there, even off in the distance, and even on LOW.I noticed a few objects popping in beside the road, such as livestock,in the fields, but it wasnt a distraction at all. What it did was improve my fps and get rid of some sound issues(crackling sounds) I had.-^
Anyways,my PC is hardly a power house by today's standards, but WR runs very smoothly and looks great, even without AA enabled. It must be stunning at high res. and AA on.
Once you get your rig up and running, try the demo. It's a great track,or set of tracks really! Get all the updates for XP,and don't forget DX 8.1 at least, although I'm running DX9.1 now. According to Tom from TDK,WR is CPU dependant,so a 2.4 gig will be a bonus. A GF4 or radeon 9xxx will rock your world!
The menu system takes some getting used to,since U don't use a mouse(argh) but it's not too bad. here's a quick run down of setting it up;
Set up your controller(a bit awkward, but with the demo patch,it'll remember it)
Set sim/arcade slider to 100% sim
Set wheel deadzone to 0
The AI in default is really tough,so much harder than PU!
The set up for your resolution is in the WR folder in Windows.
I turned brake assist off,and left abs and traction control on.
Give it a go! The demo can be a bit frustating in that it's hard to just pick a car and drive;the game wants U to keep on with the missions, even after U have won all 4 races. But the full game has a "Free Ride" mode where U can hop in a car(Only so many are available at the start) and pick any track. The high banked track in the Test center is awesome! Driving flat out at a 60 dergree angle,^_^
oops,i'm blabbering again! ^_^ Hurry up and get it already!

Hi Ric!
I'm experiencing the same audio problems and getting the same framerates. Thanks to your advice (lowering the view distance to MED), now I'm above 20FPS even in the "city" map at race start, and I'm generally around 25-30FPS in all other places/situations. And the audio crackling is gone, too.
But even at 20FPS it didn't seem to be laggy, I could normally reach Turn 1 in the middle of the group and never feel any lag -^ I just decreased the view distance to remove the audio cracks.

Corrado,I/m running the full version of the game @ 1024x768x16 now no AA and view distance @LOW. FPS is at least 30,and often higher, and the LOW stting seems just fine.-^ It;s running smooth as silk for me. I just wish there was a gamma adjustment,as I find some parts of the roads to be a bit dark.Brightening the monitor just washes out some of the colour.

Can't you use the gamma adjustment of the detonator video drivers? I think I've done something like that a long time ago, when I was tuning scanner, monitor and printer to make them use the same color/light scale.

  Great news Mark! Don't forget to update DX to at least 8.1,although I think I'm running DX9 now. If you're going to give the demo a go,re-read these threads,as there is some useful tips on correcting some issues in the menus, and in the game itself. Some ppl have no doubt found some of these things frustrating.
The demo itself is great, but now that I've got the full game,it's just so much better. In the demo, you were alwas prompted to run the missions, and It was difficult to figure out how just to take one of the 4 cars and drive. The 'Freeeride" option in the full game makes it much easier, and U don't have that big green arrow floating in the middle of your screen!

Hi V B! Unfortunately, there is no release date for North America, yet. I took a deep breath, and went ahead and ordered it online from http://www.gogamer.com It was the first time I'd bought anything online, but it was quick, easy, and I got my copy in 6 days, for a grand total of $38 USD,including shipping.I wasn't crazy about typing in my Visa #,but it's a pretty secure site with 128 bit encription, like a bank site,so the risk is minimal,IMO.
Now that I've been playing WR for the last few days,I'm glad I went ahead, and got it.The offline game rocks! Now if the MP patch is 1/2 decent,we'll be having a great time in November!

Don't know what you mean...I have a Logitech wingman with split axes and it works perfectly...I'm not even losing the controller selection settings like it's happening to some player (fixed in the official patch, though).
rms
10-14-2003, 02:50 PM
I mis-spoke when characterizing the problem as simply a split-axis issue.
I posted separately about this issue, which is basically that WR can't handle any non-obvious controller setup. In my case, DirectX sees the brake pedal as decreasing in value as the pedal is pressed.
WR has no logic to sense direction of value change as the pedal is pressed when choosing axes in the controller setup screen, hence the brake is sensed as fully applied when not pressed at all. GPL and most any other sim has no problem with this situation. It's very simple coding, but from TDK's email relay it sounds like they have no interest in patching it.
Can I reverse the wires connecting my brake pedal potentiometer? Well, maybe. I'll look at it in a few days. But this is precisely the sort of thing better detected in software.
rms

Wouldn't it be betterto try and fix the problem in the software than to move wires?
