I have been using DX 9 all along without any problems. Have you tried DX Diag?

Okay, guys, don't know if you've done this, but DX9 is a big change over 8. It's the kind of thing where you should upgrade your vid drivers to those designed specifically for use with DX9. You Nvidia guys actually have it easy as Radeon users generally need to to go through a ridiculous process of uninstall, then manually clearing caches, temp folders, safe-mode deletion of certain files, arcane processes of boots and not-boots during driver installes, and then double and triple that if your card has VIVO ^_^
Anyway, I know I say this in every post like this, but before you install any software, any at all, always image your drive. Even with WinXP's driver rollback and restore points, it's still too easy to "break" your opsys, and that's no fun at all. With an image and a properly set up system, you image in just a few minutes and if you have to, restore your image even faster, no-risk.
Also, if you have non-DX9 hardware, that is hardware not made with DX9 in mind, avoid upgrading unless you havea compelling need. DX9 is backward compatible, as much as they can make it, you can run into "issues". So if it's not broken don't fix it.
If you are using DX9, make sure you have the latest version also, DirextX9.0a. It makes DX9 look like a beta! Solves a lot of problems that the original release had.
Good luck and great framerates to everyone!
Oh, also don't overlook your sound drivers too. Also your motherboard manufacturer may have some updated drivers that help your hardware deal with the new API.

Yeah you should update your drivers if your having difficulty running DX 9, I've found my games run faster with it. Although I have had a few problems with it.
