Okie I got F1 2002 and I had Mikey download the gtr mod for it at his grandpas house. I still haven't got the update downloaded yet... darn dialup anyway.
I've been playing it a bit and as the title says i'm so new i squeak! I haven't ventured online yet but perhaps if I can get this update downloaded I'll give it a try fairly soon. So far I'm just completely impressed with the gtr mod wowwowwow you guys are doing a great job. I just wish I had a cable connection =(( oh well I will leave my whiny voice at home, I am having fun learning this new game. I remember watching some gt racing when I was in the hospital last year (even the hospital has cable) thinking that it might be fun so here's my chance and away we go!
What other downloads are good ones that I should check into besides the update? I got the F1rst proggie too, to hook into online gaming.
Thanks for any advice you can pass on to this green rookie!

Welcome Vic :)
I recommend downloading version 2.60 of the telemetry program. The Alfa 147 mod is fun and I also like the BMW M3 mod. I have other mods but raely play them as those three keep me busy enough.
Good luck with your new addiction :D

Hey welcome to F1, Vic.
Sorry I have nothing to recommend that hasn't already been said but I just wanted to say "G'day".
I didn't heard of you going to hospital. :'( Maybe it was during my short retirement. I certainly hope it was nothing major and that everything is weasely fine and healthy now.
Thanks to this game we might get to race each other online sometime.
But you all will have to wait until I get a steering wheel to work with my mobo. At least Dave and a few other Aussies had the pleasure of laughing at my driving *ahem* style *ahem* online with V8Challenge...... until my old mobo died & I bought this (supposedly better) mobo. =[
Hope to see you around more often.

I'd recommend just the GTR2002 mod, the 1.2 Patch, the Assen track, the Le Mans track (in both new and semi-old versions), the Sachsenring track, the track graphics update, and the other Lister Storm (the one driven by Tiff Needell).
That's all I'd recommend.

You mean I'm also supposed to get off my ass and download these things?!
What size are cars?
NFS5 cars are about 1-2Mb ah?
I bet these cars are many Mbs.. and the tracks too. :(
What exactly does the patch fix?
Make the cars go faster?
Maybe I could do a 2:06 on Sepang. LOL

The 1.2 patch fixes many things. The Ferrari 360 GT sounds are now realistic to a real Ferrari 360 Challenge! (and sound completely different to the old sounds, that were not even from a 360).
It gets I think a tidied up interior, the Porsche gets new sound, too, and a new interior, and the Marcos gets fixed up interior, and fixed up sounds.
And, a lot of other stuff is modified, too.

progress report: I got 1.2 downloaded and going, right now I'm downloading the track graphic update thing. I'll work on getting the tracks you suggested Chris. It's so frikkin slow with dialup that it makes me crazy. I hope I can get a decent fps once I get online. I'm really impressed with the whole thing so far! Great Job developers!

ok stupid weasel question time now lol... um I downloaded this deal sbdt_GTR2000_track_extra.rar - now what do I do with it? When I double click on it, I get a window asking me what program I want to open it with...

Vic, you need a program like WinRAR to open it. You should be able to find one on any freeware/shareware site :)

Ah, an "rar" is a compression scheme using a program called WinRAR.
Their homepage can be found at RARLab (http://www.rarlabs.com/). There you can download a free trial version that will extract the program info for you. You might want to give it a "buy" as a lot of online data is compressed using the "rar" format.
Good program.

Poor Vic, I sincerely feel your pain as even with my cable connection some downloads were painfully slow. My ISP then dropped me to 28.8kbps for a few weeks to teach me a lesson not to complain. =(( They said I exceeded the 3Gb per month limit but I know I hadn't. I have never got anywhere close to it and this particular incident was on the 19th so how could I down 3Gb in nineteen days of being actively here at RP?
I am tempted to send you a copy of the F1_2002 downloads CD which Dave had burnt and sent me.
However it will take three weeks to reach the U.S. from here. How much longer do you think the downloads will be?
Can't somebody in America please help out Vic like Dave did for me and other Aussies have done?

I live in Europe, 3 times I have offered to send cd's in mail to help people out with GTR, but none wants my help.
I'm still willing to help by send cd in post, but if somebody needs it, they have to ask me, I won't offer it anymore... ;)
Best luck!

Seems like sometimes this game remembers my controller settings and other times it doesn't. Anybody else have this problem? I go to race, no frikkin' controls. Have to restart the game and fiddle with controller settings. Other times I start it up and off I go... no problem at all. It's a logitech momo and it doesn't give me grief in any other games.
I think I have most everything I need downloaded now, I'm trying to do a championship thing offline instead of just practising on warmups and such. Thx Fiatllove for the offer of a disk. I haven't downloaded any other setups since I seem to be having a good time with the Team Holland #3 Viper.
There's a LOT to learn here... I'm still really lost most of the time.

In a couple of mods I have that problem, but not with the GTR mod. You can access the controller assignments from the garage and just re-assign the controls without having to exit. It works for me anyway. This usually happens when I have to go through the video config at game launch :(

Hi Tori  ,
My GTR work OK with controllersettings, but I helped a friend, he solved it by;
Check if some of the files in the "Savedata" folder is writeprotected (read-only), if so, turn it off. In GTR, it should be enough to do it with the "PERSONA.PLR" file (PERSONA = your playername)
Best luck!

Vic, I've been doing a bit with GTR as well. Unfortunately, I'm not just squeaky. I'm so bad I could suck golf balls through a garden hose. :D
I like the handling of the GT cars. The physics are excellent and very realistic. At Imola, the GT braking points were at about the same place as used in the F1 race - albeit at a lot slower speed.
I find the rear end of the N-GT cars to be quite a bit too twitchy. Other than that, it would be a good carset to start on.
I haven't tried the M3, 24 Hour or Turbo cars yet.
We've been doing a bit of online testing at TCC. I'm having some problems.
1. When I type in the chat, the keys that are configged to change the view (look right, look left, etc.) repeat very badly. My typing looks something like:
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNoooooooooooow is the time fooooooooooooor allllllll goooooooooooooooooooooooood mennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn to come to ....
2. Dave (Turbo2USA) has been hosting. When I enter the pit, he gets a message that says there is a mismatch:
McGregor "996GT2_Dunloppr" mismatch
McGregor "terrain.ini" mismatch
McGregor "gear_ratios.ini" mismatch
3. We tried an race at Indy RC tonight. Dave and another racer were driving Vipers against my Porsche. They were passing me on the straight like I was standing still. I switched to the Viper for another session. It was a bit quicker than the Porsche, but still far slower than their cars. It's probably related to the above mismatch messages.
Any help? Any ideas?
Thanks and TIA,
Robert

Hi Mac :)
I don't race online at all so I'm not familiar with the problems associated with it :( I hardly drive the GT cars and only the Diablo if I do. I find the big front-engined beasts undriveable
I tend to drive the 360 almost exclusively and love it to death :D It is the one car I can throw around and really have fun in.
Sorry I can't be of help :(

Hey D_Man. That 360 is very fun.
But wait until you drive the Modena Challenge cars. Those are really fun. They have no rear wing so the handling is different but it is very responsive. It should be out very soon. Final beta testing now. :)

and I think I have bugger up the settings some were because if I have a big spin the only way I can go again is to restart
one more is there a website were you can d/load setting's from as I have no idea how to set the car's up the right way :p
thanks foryour time -^

That sounds pretty strange stuff happening there Wello
The car setup stuff is pretty straight-forward. I just used trial and error until I found some settings that give a neutral to slight oversteer feel. I don't like the spring and bump settings to be too hard and the rebound settings in the mid 2000 range. I use fairly radical toe-out on the front and no toe-in on the rear.
I can put up a sample setup here, if you tell me which track you want to run. What I like may not suit you though.
