Video display problems?

I just installed GTR2002 and went to run it using the executable. Immediately after the movie I'm presented with a screen.

I think it doesn't like my vid card somehow. The screen seems to be composed of "elements" sort of like a webpage that was poorly put together and isn't designed for your screen resolution, in that many of the elements are "out of place". In the upper left corner I have GTR 2002 v1.0.

Then below it is a thin white line that seems to be cut at the far right edge by some lettering. The lettering is "Black" and the line is white and the background is also "black" so I just see some very small parts of letters, but it appears to say "Create N?". Is this "Create New Player"?

Then below that is a graphic of cars on a track, below that is an area for a text field, but it's broken out of place with its background. I can type in this field. Then below that is a website addy and below that is the simbin dev logo.

That's all I've got. If I hit "Tab" while the cursor is in the field I can hit it three times and on the fourth it returns to the field. That leads me to believe there are buttons or some other interactive elements like more fields somewhere? But when I hit enter at any of them I detect no changes. It stays at the screen.

Can anyone give me a walkthrough here? Or some advice. I'm just going to have to "reset" the pc to get out of here as it won't task switch and no other keys seem to work.

I'll try changing my desktop resolution (1600x1200) and see if that has any effect, but as it is this isn't going to take me anywhere.

I'm pretty sure it wants me to click some button ("OK") but I'm not showing any buttons on my screen. Probably a vid card issue. I rand the 3Dsetup and tried chanting desktop rezzes also, to no avail. I'm going to whipe out my video drivers and expunge them from the registry then install the latest ones and see if that helps.

Chey, have you tried running the config.exe since installing it? This should allow you to select resolution, colour depth etc.

Dave :)

Wish you luck Chey I just tried a game with the GTR and first off it goes to the normal F1 game, thenI quit and reload and it does go to the GTR game, then I try online and drive around the track but to be honest it is pretty dire for me as all I seem to do is turn the wheel and the game does everything else change gears brake etc I know I need to change the driver aids but I get so overwhelmed with it all arghhhhhhhhhhhhh I will say the car I was driving sounded awesome Lister Storm but the other cars on the track just jumped around all over the place (lag).

Did you get to set the graphics at startup some sort of EA utility starts up for me. Any way back to PU for me with a little bit of TOCA Race Driver now and then TDR is fun and has my Dad's car the GTV in it cool!!

See ya Sis

Hi, D_Man, SUESUESUE!

Yes, I ran the 3Dconfig.exe proggy, and have changed to various resolutions, etc, both native windows desktop, game, etc. I can clearly see that screen elements are "out of place". I guess whoever made the menus is using some sort of video calls that my card doesn't quite go with. The regular F1-2k menus work just fine. It's the GTR stuff. I can see the very tops of the letters "Create Ne" and then it's off my screen. It's not just screen size and position on the monitor, the elements are beyond the pixel dimensions of the screen. The only interactive element I have is the field where you type in your name. There are obviously buttons or some other elements but I can't click them. They are "off" my display.

I've just gone through a very exhaustive process of replacing all my radeon drivers (6 separate elements, registry cleaning, file and folder deletion in "safe mode", etc) and it's still a no go. I guess that's it for me and the GTR mod, at least until I want to upgrade my gaming PC. That may be a while though, as I've just spent a ridiculous sum to upgrade my server. My gaming PC is probably going to have to wait a bit.

Sad, because I was drooling over the post that chris had made about his laps around, er, "some" track, that Ferrari 360 sure is a beauty and I wanted to drive it. Argh x 11.

I just thought of something. This process, on this first screen probably creates a file or series of files related to your "player". The readme for the GTR mod says that you only get this screen the first time you play, and that subsequently you get the next screen (which I haven't seen, so I don't know if that will work, but hey...).

Could somebody generate me a player and send me the file(s) created with instructions where to copy them to? At least I'd get past this screen then, and maybe the subsequent screens will be okay (fingers, toes and eyes crossed).

Chey, I think the player creation screen is part of the program that launches F12k2 as GTR... meaning you always go through this. But, I have created a player "Chey" and will put in here in a moment, with instructions, so you can try it...

You put this folder in the C:\Program Files\EA SPORTS\F1 2002\GTR2002save directory, and that is it. It has a bunch of basic setups too... that is why it is so big.

Wish you luck Chey! I hope this will work for you.
It's a super game and you deserve a try :)

Thanks, SuperMyshkin! I'm going to give it a try now.

The only reason I thought this screen would be bypassed is that it said so in the readme. I've enver gotten past it myself, yet, but here's hoping!

If this doesn't work, could someone tell me what else is supposed to be on the screen, like what other interactive elements, buttons, fields, etc are there? I suspect there are 4 total, of which I'm seeing one, the player name field. I can't see any other elements, buttons, etc. Do they have to be clicked with the mouse, or can a keypress get me past?

Well, here's trying! &(

Well, thank you very much Myshkin. You did indeed get me to the next screen, for which I'm very grateful. Though I have the same problem there too, screen elements are just not visible.

To show you all a bit about what I'm talking about here's a representation...

http://www.geocities.com/xrchey/temp/gtr.txt

Where the little red "bullseye" is on the right side of the screen, I can click there and get some changes in the "Field" field, I can get the edge a letter to appear and when cycling through I get "GT/N" with the "N" cut in half off the screen edge. That's about as far as I can go. I guess maybe a new vidcard is in order or maybe upgrading to DX9?

Any suggestions?

I have a Radeon 7200, and all the drivers are in perfect working order (Spent about 3 hours last night getting them that way too) and are the latest available.

Have you installed the 1.2 patch? (ca 50 MB)

I had same problems, patch 1.2 fixed it.

Regarding slow graphics, first you have to run the graphic-configuration for GTR2002, it has a test-function, so you can check what resolution that gives you best performance.
Then set EVERYTHING in the DISPLAY-config (OPTIONS) within the game to MINIMAL performance, and set "visible veichles" to 2 or 3.

Setups are important!
One of the guys who programmed the suspension in GTR2002 have made a lot of setups, they can be found "everywhere", the setups is named "DA".......

Best luck, and look forward for the most breathtaking carsim ever!

Sue; try the Modena 360 instead, it's more than a handful in the beginning, talking for myself, I count on driving that car for many months to come, these are tricky cars, all of them.
So that's why I also installed the Alfa 147 mod, the brakes in GTR2002 are so powerful and real compared to PU, and so is the gaspedal,so a car like Alfa gives you a easier start.

I was glad to find Alfa 147 mod, not only because it's one of my favorite cars, but after 2-3 first days with GTR-cars, I was in despair :D , spinouts everywhere, and it took me 3 weeks or so before I was able to recover a spin/ slide with proper control
Now it's better, still driving very poorly, but at least I begin to understand how the car handles (and that's GREATASTICOOL to learn!!!)
Sue; your dad have a GTV??? what year, what engine?

Chey, I guess driving your RX7 must be the perfect practice to understand the physics in GTR2002 :D

Regarding driving in GTR2002 without aids; pretend that you are driving that powerful car for real.
Here in Norway we have a weekly tv-program called Autofil, they have a testdriver who is one of scandinavias best Touringcar-champs, Tommy Rustad, always when he drive a car that's new to him, we see him driving several laps, very easy, feeling at the steering, how the pedals reacts, over/understeer and so on. Then he starts to push it, bit by bit. He always ends up like the folks at BBC, hehe

When warming up the car in GTR2002 (4-5 laps), I try to copy that style, the 2 first laps I drive just like I was driving in real traffic, keeping the speedlimits :) (the 360 have a wonderful turbo-sound at the lower rpm-scale too, hehe)
I always use to go off the track in 5th or 6th lap when I start to push alittle.

IMO this game is just like it should be, to learn how to drive a car on the edge also takes that you know "where and what" the edge means for that particular car :p

By using the Telemetry in GTR2002, I look at TIMEDIFFERENCE for my laps to see my inconsistence, it helps me alot, and in the future I hopefully can learn it well enough to start making my own setups.

Cheyenne: definitely get the patch. It fixes many issues. Here is a link to a site that has it and many add on cars : http://www.bhmotorsports.com/GTR2K2/downloads. I think it has all of our releases there. http://www.speedsims.com has all of our cars plus the Assen track.

Driving cars of the GTR2002 mod can be very frustrating. It takes lots of practice to get good at it. Actually I am not very good at all. My lap times are so embarassing that I rarely post them. However, I really, really enjoy the game.

What I recommend for those who just do not have the patience for the learning curve is try some of the aids. Try traction control on, steering, braking, and throttle assistance on LOW. You can also use shifting and clutch assistance. In other words, an automatic transmission. These things should help you keep the car on the track better. When you think you have a good grasp of things then turn the aids off.

BTW - my favorite car is the Lister. I kind of like driving on the right-hand side of the car and it handles pretty well.

While these physics may seem impossible to drive, we have had reports from actual drivers in the FIA-GT series who have said that the cars feel quite realistic, for a computer game that is.

Best of luck with things and have fun.

PS - try setting your desktop to 32-bit color. That fixed similar problems for people that were using 16-bit color.

And that the Viper was more difficult to set up in GTR2002, than the real one.. (Fabio Babini).

But, really, the cars aren't so difficult to drive, is just that they have to be driven fairly correctly.

The Diablo GTR is a good one to race, if you want something more powerful than a NGT car, but, still fairly easy to drive. It's fairly predictable, the Diablo GTR.

The engine makes the Diablo GTR good. On the real GTR, it's tractable, and smooth; it will pull high gears, at low engine speeds, without protesting.

Also, if you have a steering wheel/pedals setup with proper clutch pedal, you might want to use that for some cars, that do have manual gearboxes in the real life. It makes starts, especially from the pit lane, so much nicer, when you can smoothly pull away.

I still wonder about the 6 speed gearboxes in the GTR versions, especially for the Alexander Frei one, that seems to be an unmodified GTR). I can probably change the gear ratios, and transmission ratios myself, I guess

I've got all the technical data for the real one. :)

Wooooohoooooooo!

1.2 worked wonders. It's all good now. Uh-huh, I can see all those buttons that weren't displaying &(

I gave sepang about 9 laps, on my second lap I got down to 2:07:xx and on lap 4 I hit 2:06:612. Just the 360 with whatever setup it comes with. The only assist I was using was the "Pit Help" as if I didn't the thing was just sputtering around on the 77mph rev limiter the whole time. Er, yeah, I've misplaced my manual. I installed F1-2002 about three months ago and hadn't messed with it since. I'll find it though!

Wow, that proggie is a blast. Love GTR! The cars feel "goodl", I didn't really find them difficult to drive (at least the 360 for about 30 minutes or so), like all tracks, though it's the subtleties and braking points that need the learning. After my 2:06 lap I spent a bit in the gravel traps, and then remapped some of the controls (clutch key :p ) to more convenient places. I have a feeling I'll be spending a bit of time with GTR 2002!

Well done, Simbin!

Thank you all very much for the posts and help, D_Man, SUE, Myshkin, Basti, Mads, Vince, Chris! I'm in your debt, quite a program, glad I didn't have to hang it up!

Hehehe, what a blast of a time Cheyenne!!! Stunning!
Do you keep the line or do you drift?
Maybe you can send me a telemetry-file sometime, I need to practice braking alot, could be fun to compare with you who can drive that kind of cars.

You find stats at www.findthelimit.com , at same url you also find the latest version of telemetry.exe (v 2.60)

Have fun, take care!

REV-LIMITER in pits;
it's mapped to "L" key as default, you can reconfig it in controller-assignnements :)

...

I believe his statement was that there were more set up options than he actually has or uses. AFAIK his handling evaluation was done using Doug's default set up. Admittedly, it's been a long time since this came out and it was published in an Italian racing magazine so we had to rely on translations to get the jist of it.

Alex,

if you like GPL, I can only advice you to;
RUN to your friend and get the mod, the 1.2 patch, the addoncars, and some handsful of addontracks. :)

Nurbergring Nordschleife will be released soon, in 3 different version, CLASSIC, MODERN and 24 HOURS

probably get the add-on and the patch, and get the cars myself. Maybe next week, dunno

Addon-cars are not that important in the beginning, try to prior addontracks instead, because most of the addoncars are only "redundants" of the defaults, only new wrappings (team-paintings).
BUT, you also need some cars ofcuz, EG the Ferrari 550 comes in two different versions, also the Lambo-monster comes in two different versions (if I'm not totally lost in memory) :)
And, I guess you wanna try the Enzo, hehehe, that's a heavy one for sure &(

If your friend is nice, ask him to download the Alfa 147 mod from www.rsdg.net , only 50 MB or so, and drive a modern italian beauty, my fav these days among real hatchback's (they don't produce Fiat Bravo HGT anymore, hehe)

The reason why you don't see many full add-on cars, is, because it is so damn notoriously difficult to get a mesh, in game.

It's just about impossible, in fact.

And don't bother asking others to help, either. Most of them are only interested, if they can get the mesh to use in another mod, or, do a race colour scheme for it.

When they find out that won't be allowed, suddenly, they aren't interested, anymore. Typical.

I was planning a F12002 mod, but, I don't care if it doesn't happen. Better for it not to happen, than, for the meshes to be used in ways that are not approved of, by the original authors.

Indeed, I'm not working on any more modifications for any games, of any sort, now. I've given up that.

There is a few Vipers in GTR2002, you know.. And the British Marcos LM600, does have an American Chevrolet V8 powering it..

But the Lister Storms seem to lead the AI races, all the time.. ;) Or one of the Ferrari 550's is battling for the 1st or 2nd place.

And the poor Marcos is usually last place.
