Holden's new heart beats
The first in a family of V6 engines which will spawn Holden's replacement for Commodore V6 went into production last week. GM's St. Catherines, Ontario plant in Canada produced out its first High Feature V6 (HFV6) engine, a 3.6-litre V6 producing 190kW of power and 343Nm of torque. The engine, which has a number of high-tech features, including variable vale timing on both the inlet and exhaust valves, is said to have better fuel economy and lower exhaust emissions than the engine it replaces.

This 3.6-litre version is headed for the 2004 Cadillac CTS large sedan while Australia's Commodore is expected to get a bigger capacity 3.8-litre version, to be built at Holden's $500million Fishermen's Bend engine plant. Engine performance looks promising for Holden, its current Buick 3.8-litre V6 produces 152kW / 302Nm, trailing Ford's BA six cylinder with 182kW / 380Nm. Production on Commodore HFV6 engines is scheduled to begin in October this year, the first batch headed for export markets. Commodore will get the new HFV6 with the VZ facelift in early 2004.

Bentley announces GT pricing
Been counting your dollars in anticipation of the arrival of Bentley's Continental GT? We can now reveal the official price, and it looks like you'll need a Mack truck to carry the 379,995 gold $1.00 coins needed to buy your spot in the queue. The all-wheel drive Continental GT is scheduled to start arriving Down Under in the fourth-quarter of 2003, powered by a 6.0-litre turbocharged W12 engine producing 411kW of power. Already, 100 Australians have financially indicated their desire for a Bentley GT coupe, which is equipped with formula one-style paddle-shift, six-speed gearbox and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4.8sec.

ANd good news:
Holden shows USA the way
Holden has been given the lead to develop a family of rear-drive cars for the USA based on its all-new VE Commodore platform due in 2006. A report in the April issue of Wheels magazine says that Pontiac and Chevrolet will be the primary GM beneficiaries of Holden's expertise, using the platform to produce large rear drive sedans like the Pontiac G6 (pictured) shown at this year's Detroit Motor Show. The plan calls for Holden to develop the basic dimensional package and major systems that will be common to all versions, including the Australian Commodore.
