View Full Version : Should RacerPlanet host an F1 2002 site?

I have tried to download some Mods and found that I need to register on so many sites that it's becoming a nuisance. Especially one called BoomTown which never gave me the download anyway. They don't even mention F1 2002 in their download section however links to the "GT Racing 2002" Mod from the SimBin eventually (via racesimcentral) take you to that BoomTown site.

Other download mirrors include Fileplanet and Game Arena which both require membership to download anything. I hate Fileplanet, always have. I am a member there but (again) it won't accept my username today.

This prompts me to make an F1 2002 site here at RacerPlanet even though I don't want to commit myself to maintaining yet another website. Therefore I'll ask you guys.
A) Should we host an F1 2002 site here at RacerPlanet?
B) if so, who would like to maintain it?

That sounds a bit strange Rob. I got all my mods from sites without having to register or getting bumped to other download sites like Fileplanet. I will never ever register with Fileplanet because it is a sure-fire recipe to be spammed within an inch of your life.

If you want to set up a F1 2002 site it would be very helpful though and we could use it to have useful info and setups etc for people.

I say we just have the F12002 forum here, and not a dedicated site, with extra (large) files to host.

Save on bandwidth. If something new arrives, we post a link here. Use someone elses bandwidth, rather making the server costs here even greater.

Or if, someone has a question about car setups, just ask here, and we try to answer the question.

I'm not going to commit to running another website, either. I have the GT-mod website, and the GT-mod project, and that is enough, for me to do in my own time. :)

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Chris : You have made a good point about the bandwidth and I did think of that when I posted the proposal in the staff forum earlier.
The reason why I suggested this in the first place was because of hard to obtain files. The intro replacements for one. They are very small 2x 1KB each.
And the GT Racing Mod which is very large.... apparently. But I would like to run the M3 Mod however it says you need the GTR2002 Mod to install the M3 Mod.

Here is the Readme from the M3 Challenge:

M3 Challenge for F1-2002 by EA/ISI by Neil Walker

Installation:

You should have a full install of F1-2002, unmodified for best results. It will probably still work if you've modified your original install but if you have problems start with a fresh install. Double-click the installer icon and follow instructions. Install the "M3 Challenge" version first, then when that's done run the installer again and choose the "GTR2002 Bonus Tracks" version. Note that for this to work you must have GTR2002 installed - all this does is copy over the GTR2002 bonus tracks to your M3 installation. When running the installer you may have to wait a bit as the self-extracting RAR archive unpacks to a temporary folder. When it's all done there will be a shortcut in your F1-2002 directory that you can drag to your desktop and use to launch the game.

Unless I am not reading it correctly. If so, please point me straight.
I have downloaded the M3 Mod and it's upgrade but this GTR2002 Mod is so hard to get.

You don't need GTR mod, for M3 mod, I don't think.

The only thing you might need the GTR mod for, is, perhaps, for the extra tracks, that came with GTR.

Only problem with the M3 mod as far as I can see is the launch control system that the SMG-II equipped M3 is supposed to have doesn't work.

If they were realistic, you should engage launch control, floor the throttle, then the revs hover at around 3500-4000rpm, and then, you let go of the gear selector, and the thing fires off.

In the real M3, it doesn't actually stop wheelspin, but, just aims for the best balance between grip and wheelspin. Sometimes you even have to modulate the throttle, yourself too. I'm going to try and work out how to make that work, and, if I can, I'll offer a small update, or, explain how to make it work.

Oh, in the real M3, you quickly learn to switch of DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) if you plan to use the launch control function.. The DSC has a fit if you try a launch controlled start, while it is still on. It interrupts and limits power, to try and stop the wheelspin. But, once DSC is off, it stays off, and doesn't interrupt, again, until it is turned back on again by the driver. It's things like this that make the M3 such a more focused drivers car, than the similarly quick (in raw acceleration), but less involving supercharged V6 C32 AMG from Benz.

Now, back to the GTR-mod, I'll try and find some working links so you can download it. Just wait..

Okay, here you go, Acca:

GT-Racing 2002 v.1.0
http://www.bhmotorsports.com/download/1157

GT-Racing 2002 v.1.2 patch:
http://www.bhmotorsports.com/download/2116

And here is the main category for GTR2002:
http://www.bhmotorsports.com/GTR2K2/downloads

Oh, and the 1.2 patch is a MUST have. You don't want to hear the Ferrari 360 GT sounds pre 1.2 patch. They were atrocious, to put it mildly.. Post 1.2 patch, they are really realistic, and nice to listen to, if lacking somewhat in bass. They just seem to lack the really low frequency sort of noises that you hear in the real car, like that bass V8 rumble (you'll know what I mean, even the smaller V8's have it).

If the above fails -as it did for me- you might wanna try this link http://files.games.telstra.com/patches/f12002/GTR2002.exe

Good link.

I do know that the 1.2 patch link I posted above worked, because I clicked on it, and it asked me what I wanted to do with the file..

Also, Acca, I remember you were having problems with your internet connection, too, with it being slow.

Try the following:

1. Click the icon in the task bar for your network connection (I presume you are using a network card)
2. Click properties button
3. It will say at the top, connect using (whatever your network adapter is), and underneath that, their will be a configure button, click this button.
4. Now got to the advanced tab, and change the line speed to TP half duplex.

This might make a difference, for you. If you are not using a network card, for your Optus connection, you might want to try getting one. They can be had pretty cheap, for around $30, and they work okay. The Belkin ones seem to work okay, and are easily setup. Plug your modem into the network card, might work better, than through a USB port, if you are using the USB adaptor cable for the modem.

Also, if the Telstra link above doesn't work, try this one (it works for me):

http://www.hsw.hu/gtrmod_eng.shtml

Or here is the direct link:
http://www.hsw.hu/file/f12002/Mods/GTR2002.exe

But check out their site, it's not bad at all.

@Unicorn: Thanks mate although it was taking ages to load. It's still appreciated.

Chris: Cheers buddy. The link worked immediately for me. -^
I will try your connection config tip as this is downloading at 10.4Kb/sec

Yay OptAss. =[

chris
02-24-2003, 03:48 AM
Nah, it's slow for me, too, 18.4kb/s. It's just the webserver that site has, it's not the fastest.

I usually get 350-500kb/s download speeds, sometimes better, but, sometimes, slower, where the individual webserver is under heavy load.

AccadaccA
02-24-2003, 12:23 PM
Bloody typical OptAss download error.
After waiting 2 hours and 40 minutes I only got 120Mb of the 265Mb download. =((

I tried your half duplex suggestions Chris but then went back to Auto when it wouldn't connect.

Here it is some 9 hours later and another attempt of the download is running at an average of 9.5KB/sec on my *ahem* cable *cough cough*.

Maybe one of use should burn it it CD, and send it to you, via the post?

Rob, I burnt the disk tonight and it is in my bag. I included the GTR 2002, Alfa, BMW, Turbo, SSM mods with some extra tracks and cars. However, I didn't include the 1.2 patch as I figured it would be easy to download.

It is a full 700MB disk :D

I hope this suits you okay.

Thank you very much Dave. Top bloke award (again in 2003) goes out to ya. :hat:-^
Although the GTR 2002 Mod is the only one I have had trouble getting I am greatful for the others you have included. Never know, with my luck I'd probably have troubles with downloading those too if I tried.
The only Mod I have is the M3 and I have a few tracks as I've mentioned before so now I'm on the hunt for cars.... sedans not open wheelers.

Don't sweat it about the 1.2 patch mate, I already have it, thank you.

Cheers Dave. :hat: -^

This just might help out more than you think. Josh has virtually given the nod for an RP hosted F1 2002 site. If this eventuates I'll upload the CD you burnt then many would be able to download it from here. Hopefully at a faster rate.

I've been working on a site design since lastnight just in the hope that Josh might agree.
As soon as I'm finished I'll run it by him (and the staff) for the final decision.

Thanks again Dave.

What did you have in mind for the design?

AccadaccA
02-26-2003, 04:41 AM
Nothing fancy Chris. I thought to keep it basic and quick loading.

I went with a filing cabinet theme. Like the menu in that Codemaster's V8 race driver game.

AccadaccA
02-28-2003, 07:18 PM
Forget about it.

Josh obviously dislikes the design as my post in the staff forum still hasn't been answered although another new thread there has.

Sorry for misleading anyone.
