Okay so I had some X-Mas Amazon gift certificate money left over after a few other purchases, and I see that F1 2002 is on sale now for US$14.99 at Amazon... so I got it. I only ran a couple of laps in the F1 cars to see how it compared to F1 2k1... 'bout the same, IMHO.

Then I did the GTR mod... cool, kinda fun driving the Lambo, Porsche and Ferrari (so far). I like driving the cars a lot more than the F1's... and my only major gripe so far is the replay, both how the cars look a little silly in motion, and the actual replay functions. I turned off all of the assistance... figured it couldn't be any harder than what I am used to, and it seems I was right.

So, for someone that is playing other games and just has some time for GTR 2002, what else should I do? What will get me maximum enjoyment with little fuss... I don't mind a learning curve, but I don't want to have to be tweaking anything outside of this program. I have everything else running like I want it to, so...

What do you say? What are the must-haves in F1 2K2 so far?

Mysh, I downloaded Doug Anao's setups from the SBDT site and modified them to suit myself.

In the replay you can use the Insert, Home, Page Up, Page Down and arrow buttons to select and manipulate the camera.

I recommend turning down the speed sensitivity to zero and setting the FF effects strength slider to -100.

If I think of anything else, I'll post it.

I just ran a few laps on Albert Park in the 'rari 360, and just broke 2:10 so it looks like I have some work to do. That was without changing the setup though... I guess I'm going to have to learn at least how to stick in other people's setups.

Oh good, so there are camera controls... I didn't see anything in the book about that. I am guessing that it is because I set the replay quality on Medium, but the car looks silly when it's moving... like it doesn't have shocks. Is that right?

Any other suggestions? I'll take whatever you care to throw out... hehe luckily Brands Hatch was a snap to learn :) only one chicane difference. And the first half of Monaco is a snap too...

Thanks m8

Mysh, my replays look like the real deal. I don't know what you mean by the cars looking "silly". I showed my brother a replay and he thought it looked a lot like watching a real race on TV.

Monza should be a doddle for you as it is a lot like the GPL track with a few chicanes thrown in :)

Here's a link to some add-on tracks, Mysh:

Road Atlanta is fun, especially the last downhill & turn before the start/finish straight :D

Dave,

In the setup for replays, there is a setting "Replay Fidelity" which I had on medium... there is also "high" and "full" or something like that. On medium it looks like the car is floating right above the track, following the line taken but you don't see the weight of the car shift, nor do you see it slide. As a result it looks silly... but it was from my settings :)

I ran Monza in F1 2001, as well as Imola, so I know the basic setup of both tracks. Is Road Atlanta close to the GPL version?

By the way, I looked for setups and I didn't really find any at the SBDT site. I followed the GTR Setups link but it only gave me... a couple.

Agent, cool I didn't know you were playing GTR 2002... one of these days, when I at least manage to overcome my complete newbieness, we should all try to get together for an online race.

I have been sticking almost exclusively to NGT (and the GT3 in my sig at that) when playing GTR, and I've been dabbling with the M3 mod online a bit as well.
I'm usually looking for races from 7-10pm cst or so. I have found a few cool guys that let me run with them in both mods... look for a pitname ending in JK (that's JayK from the Simmods boards) or a VRE pit if you wanna run GTR online - chances are I'll be in one of those. -^
We had fun last night in VRE, 15 people all driving Surfer's Paradise for the first time :help:

edit: erm.. I took the pic out of my sig, but here it is:

Here's a Must have link for F12002.
It also has the different gtr2002 mods and links.

Yeah, I finally found them accidentally at about 2 AM (was doing some late-night work)... I used some other setups that I found and that helped a bit. What is hampering me more than anything else at this point is my driving ability :) After a few more laps I am down to 2:07 at Albert Park in the 360, and I've gotten around Silverstone, Magny-Cours, Laguna, Road Atlanta, Monza, Spa, Monaco without much trouble... I think that is it so far.

I was amused that on Road Atlanta, with a layout that is almost the same as the GPL version except that section just before the final crest, I had almost the same time as my GPL lap time about a year ago... 1:18 :)

Dave, do you find that GTR 2002 affects your GPL driving ability? I know that when I tried out F1 2001 (regular) for a few days last summer, going back to GPL it took me a full race at Brands just to get used to it again, and maybe a day or two to recover fully. I think the GTR physics are closer to GPL than the F1's, so hopefully when I switch back and forth it won't take much adjustment.

My short and futile attempt last night in Multiplayer was disappointing... Agent, you saw me there, right? Anyway, I should probably turn it down to 1024X768 for online, because 1280X1024 gave me some hiccups. After trying to figure out all of the online controls/menus... I am still not exactly sure how you are supposed to know who you are viewing from the chat. Is there a way to do that, or do you just have to learn each car's name and figure out who is who? Can you chat while on the track? If so, what do you need to type to bring up the text box? Is there a way to whisper?

I also wondered what happened as I was sitting in the pit with about 20 minutes to go in qual, and I had to get up to do something... I came back in about 5 minutes, and everyone else was on the grid for the start. I missed the start, and then tried to begin from the pit... it let me enter my car so I moved, but oops red light at pit exit! Brakes!!! Passed the line and disqualified :( So maybe 3 qual laps online and then disqualified... I would call that a bum deal.

Anyway, I've had fun so far... it is probably my inexperience, but doesn't it seem kind of hard to lose control (spin and such, at least while on the track), but when you start to lose it, it seems almost unrecoverable? It may be my reflexes from other games are causing the wrong reactions... opposite lock has worked for me a couple of times to recover from oversteer/swinging back out at lower speed, but not during a higher speed impending spin... it seems I've had a lot of fishtails. I've also expected to have more trouble braking, but the worst that has happened is I've braked too late... locking up the tires gives me smoke and it seems to heat up the tires so they get a bit more slippery, but with the Ferrari and Lambo at least, I have not had problems with the weight shift... don't even notice it.

Duh I should have tried out the Porsches before now... that's what I'll do today, when I have time. Any other pointers, observations would be greatly appreciated :)

Woah, their.. You might want to exercise extreme care with the 911 GT2.. And be sure to be in the middle of the road, when braking for a turn.. It's a twitchy machine.

But, it's considerably older than the other cars, though, so it can be excused. And you are right about the tyres, after locking brakes, or heavy wheel-spinning.. They heat up, too much, and start to go off.. I find that working them up to optimum temperature gradually seems to help.

Like, on brand new tyres, just be really careful, and don't do any sort of wheel-spinning. Just be nice to them, and then you can start to work them harder, when they are up to temperature.

When the tyres are up to temperature, the cars, especially the 360GT, really becomes a fun thing to drive.

The Viper I don't understand.. It just seems to handle like a big truck.. Doesn't stop well, and, too damn twitchy on the corner exits. Once that huge engine hits about 3000rpm, it snaps into a wild spin very easily, and its extremely hard to catch it..

I've noticed that with a few of the cars.. The oversteer should be more easily controllable, and not just be the sort of oversteer that snaps you off the road.

Thanks for the tips and warning Chris -^ I started off with the GT3, and thought that it was a lot of fun... and it seems a lot faster than the 360, at least from a short session on Silverstone. I was doing high 1:50's in the 360, and 2nd lap I did 1:53 in the GT3... very civilized... so I was wondering what the deal was with the GT2...

Hehehe let's say that I spent more time on my outlap in the 993 GT2 looking backwards than forward :D Second lap was a little better, third lap was no spins but slow, fourth lap was down to 1:52, so I think I've got a basic handle on it... I think NFS PU/GPL training definitely helps in the GT2 ;)

Great to see you getting there with the mod Mysh :)

To answer your questions: It doesn't affect my GPL driving but that may be because I am not very good at GPL to start with and the fact that I have always dabbled with the F1 2001 mods and F1 2002 mods while playing GPL. Having said that, I am having a bit of a break from GPL because I was on one of those frustrating plateaus.

As far as the spins are concerned, there has been some criticism of F1 2001 and F1 2002 that the spins are too "canned" and once they start there is no recovery. A couple of times I have been able to catch the start of a spin and used some opposite lock to keep control, but most of the time it is wall banging time :(

Although the GT3 feeld faster than the 360, I generally find the 360 to produc faster times - weird

I hope this helps :D
