Since many of you have probably never heard of this car, here's the story. The Porsche 916 started out as a prototype built as an idea for a high performance, more luxurious 914. The prototype was built with a 190hp 911S engine, a fixed metal roof was fabricated to improve rigidity, fiberglass bumpers were custom made, the fenders flares from the 914/6 GT were added, and finally, the suspension and brakes were upgraded.

Unfortunently, the Porsche bean counters rejected the car. But a few members of the Porsche family wanted the car, as did a few favored Porsche customers. So at least ten (the exact number is debated) additional 916 "prototypes" were built and sold, some with the 210hp engine from the 911 Carrera RS. The performance of these cars made them faster than any street 911 until the 911 Turbo was introduced a few years later.

Here's a couple of pics of the real thing, since I suspect many of you have never heard of the 916.

This model of a 916 is, of course, based on my 914. The mesh is basically done, and the 916 mods added around 500 polys, which will raise the grand total to about 6500 polys.

It still needs some work, the center inlet on the front bumper is too wide, I need to add the fog light cutouts, and it needs to be mapped. The textures won't be much different from my 914, so they won't take long.
