View Full Version : Help!
i rebooted my comp about a month ago, and ever since, i havent been able to get nfs hs working. Everytime i start nfs, it says exception caught. its not the pirated version i used to use, i actually have the real one now, and i uninstalled properly so its not any remaining files either. what could it be?

hey dawg, maybe u've got 2 many user cars in ur nfs folder, dat msg normally cums up when u have 2 many user cars in ur cars folder. I dunno. try deleting sum user cars, I hope it helps.

Either that or you've got matching serial numbers. Or it could be other things, but those are the 2 most common problems.
no, you guys dont understand, i dont have the game installed, and i uninstalled properly, I NEVER INSTALLED ANY CARS< SO IT CANT BE THAT!
Oh that makes things even easier-- install the game. It won't run off the CD.

OK, so if I understand it correct, you don't have NFS4 installed? So when does the exception error happen then: after you place the NFS4 cd in your CD player and the autorun starts?
Sorry, but I can't really think of an explanation for that.
Usually exception errors occur when the game starts looking for something that it can't find - in this case I wonder if the cd maybe is scratched?
Also, what is your OS? I had no problem with running NFS4 on XP, but I don't think everyone was that lucky... just a guess.
Obviously, you guys dont get it, when i reinstall, i uninstall the previous installation, and i dont have any cars installed on the previous installation, and the game that i am using is not a pirated version, so i dont know why the exception cuaght message keeps coming up.
p.s. scp, i've been around comps my whole life, and ive been in the nfs scene for a while, im not that stupid...if i were you i wouldnt talk before you know who you are talking to/about (ya acca im a hypocrit!)

I don't think anyone is calling you stupid here, it's just that after this post:
no, you guys dont understand, i dont have the game installed, and i uninstalled properly,...
... I didn't get whether you had the game installed or not, and probably so did scp. That's all.
Now, if you get this error on a supposedly clean install, without any additions, then the only thing I can think of if maybe you accidentally deleted an essential file - I got it after removing my traffic folder from my cars directory, for example.
What did you do, minimum, full or typical install?

Could it be that you inserted a "saved carreer mode profile" back into the game after the new installation?
The game used to give me that error when I would remove some of the cars that I owned in carreer mode!
Just a thought hope it helps!
Ok, let me try to explain this 1 more time...
i just rebooted my comp, i have no nfs/ and or other files on my comp. I install nfs:hs, (full) now i run need for speed...(i did not install any cars, and i did not start any career modes or anything) i cant get it to run because it bring up an exception caught. Maybe it could be that when i install, my stupid f*ckin retarded computer has hidden game files like savedata and car.vivs which install themnselves after the dir's are created. I have no f#ckin clue what it could be but i really wanna play, theres finally some quality cars out there after 2 and a half years of waiting. and before my reboot i had nfs installed, so its not my OS or my sys. (it could be, because i just added a whole shitload of ram, but i dont think that would bring up and exception caught???)

When you reinstall, All the "extra" files will still be there. Everytime I reinstalled the game, all the user cars and carrer modes where still there. When I wanted to start fresh, I had to delete the whole NFS folder from the computer as if it had never been there. I suggest looking through the files like you said.
I Know Eddie, i did that already, but whats evenfunnier is that i never installed any cars after my reboot, cuz i havent been able to get it working after the reboot, i know what you mean eddie, i know all the files are there, but i never installed any! I CANT FIGURE IT OUT!

For someone who claims to have "been around comps" his whole life you sure are confusing when explaining the process. First "REBOOT" means re-started. From the rest of what you are saying I'm sure you meant "FORMAT" all those times you said "REBOOT".
Then nobody knew if you meant it was installed or uninstalled or friggin' deleted. The only point you did make clear was this isn't the hacked version you once ran.
Please don't pay out on those who try to help you. It's your way with words that caused the confusion.
You said you uninstalled correctly although that wouldn't matter if you formatted and only installed from the CD. (without back up savegame files etc). I assume you have all the same drivers installed.
If this is correct and the game gives you any errors the only thing you can do is keep re-installing it (over and over). I had to re-install the game several times when I first bought it. For some reason it never use to install KPark properly and the game had chosen it as the default track to start. I don't know why it did this but it works fine now and I have formatted and re-installed from the same CD many times since.
One question we should ask is when does it give the error? When you are about to race or doesn't it even load the menus?
If it's when you click on the "Race" button then it is similar to the probs I had. Try selecting another track (& car). If that works then either re-install or copy and paste the offending track (or car) over from your CD.
Good luck with it.
No, I cant even start the game!

Shite. Not good mate.
I would just keep uninstalling/re-installing until it works. Of course a few choice words during this always contributes :D As long as they are said offline. ;)
Sorry I haven't an answer other than keep trying.
Good luck.
O Well, Thanx For The Help Guys!

just a guess here: maybe it does have something to do with adding lots of RAM, from what I heard, win98 could have problems with more than 256 mb. Check the 3rd post in this thread (http://www.gameprofiles.com/needforbetterspeed/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=7&t=000099) at the NFBS Hardware Forum.
Again, just guesswork, but maybe worth looking into.
