Got 4bit arms in and went to test at notorious Monaco, where I tend to CTD at S-bend where the crowd loom up on bleachers before you go down to the couple more Sbends and then tunnel.....
Chugging along fine (apart from my driving lol) .. then in exactly same spot... BOING CTD :(((
Must be something else... I don't have to reboot after installation do I , Dave?
Anyways...
we plough onward ;)

Hank, what Monaco updates have you installed? Have you tried Monaco with just the original track? Do you get CTDs anywhere else?
We'll get to the bottom of this, don't worry :)
thx 4 reply Dave....
I have had lots of updates and re-installs.... but I think I'm pretty 'clean' now...
Just had a go at Mosport (and took 10 secs off yay!!!)
Only 1 CTD there....
Then tried Zand... got a couple of laps in and then BOING...
It's a bit disconcerting... cos now I'm so paranoid that when I do get a pb I immediately exit the game so as not to lose it from my BEST Laps chart....
Ah well .....
I think I'm using Software rendering and have a Viatech thingy.
I've searched for other drivers and my 'puter tells me that my (32Via?) software is the best I have .
Could this be the prob?
many thx
hank :))
went into graphics (in the game) and reduced many features...
reduced overall detail too and switched to 536x380 (or something like that)... game didn't look too good but got another second off Zand, and then 4 secs off Monaco.... no CTD!!!
So far so good :))
I'm gonna start re-introducing details (tyres, dashboard, car details, etc) until I CTD...... looks like my prob might just be graphics card :((
Onward!!!! >>>>>>>

(Oh yeah.. just got my dad's wheel up from Portsmouth which I'm gonna try now... and maybe get him a MOMO :)))

Hank, I didn't realise that you were using software mode. From reading some of Owain Shaw's posts about problems running track updates in software mode I think it has to do with the large texture sizes used in some updates. I think the "voodoo friendly" updates are okay because they use smaller textures.
BTW, you shouldn't have to use les than the standard VGA 640x480.
I hope this helps.
Dave
Many thanx, Dave......
Yeah i guess that must be it.
The good news is that I'm not driving for the fashion show (just love to drive )
I'm back at 640x480... it's looking good and I just did 6laps at Ring (taking 22seconds off my previous pb.. luv that ferrari)...
It's working... slowly slowly :))))))))))))
I went to Monaco and started hurtling round the track...
BOINK :((
Went back in and crawled around 'til I got to Virage de la Gare, then hit F10 to see a bit more scenery. I was in first gear doing about 8mph and when I got round the corner I reversed back to the entry point of V de la G. I was up on the right hand pink pavement and inching slowly forward.. just as i came off the pink I went BOINK.
Anyone else had that? Is it a bug in the Track?
Fingers' crossed that that is it. I'll try again avoiding the sidewalk.

Hope you don't have nvidia, I had alot of probs for awhile and Monaco was one of the worst. Still get nervous every time I come onto the front stretch but it hasn't ctd'd since the 3082 came out.
It looks like I *had* NVIDIA in there... but there is only a config file...... I'm guessing the guy that sold it to me whipped it out before I collected it lol
Anyways. do I need better Graphics?
Many thx

Hmm, could that be the Trident chipset, an 8meg onboard card, or PCI, either way...
Hank - have you tried Direct3D mode? if you don't have it available, try installing the Papy Direct3D GPL patch (http://www.papy.com/downloads/gpl_d3d.exe)
If so, I'm not sure, being no expert on GPL problems, I wouldn't know where to start,
Good luck.
Many thx, Phil.... I'll give it a go :)))))))))))))

Hank,
the Viatech is not the graphics card, but the motherboard chipset.
Look in settings | control panel | system and open the second tab (peripherals, I think). Search for the "video board" and see what model it is. Maybe we can help you finding the best drivers and use the D3D rendering mode (the software renderer is a pain for the framerate!!!).
@Lance:
I have an old nVidia TNT2 and no problems at all, even with the old 29.xx drivers
thanx all :))
Have been away for a few days (got dad all hooked up and working like magic :))) )
I've downloaded the D3D patch (and ALL those instructions!!)
When I feel up for it I'll give it a go.
I've looked all over my computer and it looks to me like my graphics card/motherboard chipset is 8Mb.... but I could be mistaken. The reason I think this is because while down at my folks' I saw a more beautiful graphic display on my dads computer for PU and GPL, and he has a 16MB NVIDIA on his 600 Mhz 'puter (I have a 867Mhz)... So I'm pretty sure I have VIAtech software rendering. I wish I knew more, and would appreciate any more info from anyone that knows about this stuff :))
I think the answer is to get a graphics card... maybe a 64Mb (would 128Mb be a waste on my 867?)
Many thanx

congrats, Dave, on your new times :)))

Hank the amount of memory on a graphics isn't as important as the graphics processor. If you have an AGP slot then I would recommend getting a Geforce 4 MX440 or MX 460. That would wok well with your system. However, If you don't have an AGP slot then you will need to track down the best PCI card you can find.
Do you know anyone who is savvy about computers who might be able to give you some good advice?
Dave
Hi Dave :))
I've been v. busy messing with my 'puter.
Downloaded a few racing games and got some of them to work :))
I found it odd that I get a lovely picture in PU and WAS having trouble with GPL (an older game).
Anyways.... I have a Viatech motherboard/chipset/graphics controller thingy... one of the games I downloaded was kind enough to tell me :))
I noticed in GPL that I could choose between 5 3DAccelerators:
3Dfx, Rendition, OpenGPL, None, or..... Direct3D7!!!!!
I only ever had a couple of choices before, so I don't know where Direct3D7 came from..... I searched my 'puter and it came up blank... go figure.
So I chose Direct3D7 (just to see :)) ) and I couldn't BELIEVE the quality!!!!! My game now looks as lovely as PU... I haven't had a CTD!!!!!! and I'm one second away from breaking 10minutes at the Ring (a big thing for me at the moment :)).... and that's in the Brabham yay!!!!
I do have a wee prob still..... There is a flicker thru the middle of my screen when I drive, and when I watch replays on the full screen there is a lot of background/behind the scenes graphics flicking superimposed onto the replay.....
I've adjusted my Performance/Hardware Accelerator to minimum, but I'm still getting some jitters. I can live with it 'cos just seeing the difference (I have the driving groove visible now) makes it worth putting up with. I also set my colour resolution to 256 colours and display to 640x480.
Any ways that's the state of play and I'm not complaining.....
There's always a way :)))))))))))

Great to hear you are making progress Hank :)
GPL runs in 16 bit colour in Direct3D so it is best to set your desktop to that colour depth. I also recommend trying 800x600 resolution because 640x480 is the standard VGA resolution and isn't really using your graphics card.
I prefer Open GL to Direct3D, but a lot of people have trouble getting GPL to run in Open GL. One big benefit is better framerates :D
Yes, I did try Open GPL, but couldn't get it to run :((
...any tips? :))
I'll reset my desktop and resolution and give it a go ...
Many thanx Dave :))
How's your progress?
I'm closing in on +200 ( half of which is NurburgRing)

Hank,
I'm happy you found the way to use the D3D renderer and got rid of that terrible software renderer! Direct3D7 choice in your GPL choice showed up because it IS the D3D patch that you installed :)
Follow Dave's suggestions about resolution and color depth and you'll get great image improvements, although you may get some FPS loss. If it's getting too slow, reduce some detail inside the video options in GPL (start with removing the mirror details and the top-right settings about reflections and such).
I think you have the original OpenGL driver, that's not very good and it often doesn't work.
Bad news: you may need the newer version (get it HERE (http://forum.racesimcentral.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49101) ) but I'm almost sure that you won't have it working, because it's requiring some new nVidia drivers, that you can't install with your intergrated video board.
Sry about that...:( You will have it working fine, if you buy a nVidia card and install the latest Detonator drivers as mentioned in the linked message.
BTW, GPL is far more resource critical than PU, althogh it's older (it had less success also for this reason, back in 1998 there was a small amount af people with a PC powerful enough, to run GPL at full detail!!!)
CU
To get rid of the flashing that you are seeing, you must disable Triple Buffering in the Display Properties for your video card. Also, turn on Vertical Sync there too. Someone with your brand of video card will tell how to do these.
rms
rsquires@flash.net
thanx, rms...
I don't think I have a video card as such... just the motherboard chipset: ViaTech VT8361/VT8601.... using Trident TRID_P3D.DRV and vmm32.vxd......
I don't know what all that means, but I've looked thru much of my 'puter and cannot see anywhere to adjust Buffering... except in GPL/core.ini... where I messed around quite a bit and have a picture which looks as fuzzy as I like :))))))))
If I could adjust Vertical Synch in core.ini that might solve my prob..
I'll have a look and see what I come up with...
Onward :)))))))))))))))))))))))
