what's the usual ideas for random lockups in races?

I have 3d audio off, sky rendering off, latest drivers. I don't remember what else was on the list of things to do. :)

Radeon 8500
Atlon XP 1.54 Ghz

Any radeon owners remember dealing with this?

I've had a number of video problems, but not the lock-up you mention. I know the GeForce cards have been an issue. Here is a cut-and-paste from a message Gus posted on another board. Not sure if it works for your card, but it is worth a shot.

You might get TNT/2/Geforce problems, e.g. full system lock, with only hitting the restart button as a fix. This normally happends on Normandie backwards for most peoples PC setup's, but it can happen on other tracks.

So try the following in order with Dets up too 6.50:

-Turn off Lensflare option
-Change headlights to Vertex from projected
-Turn off Rear View mirror
-Turn off Sky Rendering
-Turn off Ambient sounds
-Use the Skyselector Util too change the Sky texture on any track that cause crashes. I use Corsicas on Normandie.

Now I've done a bit of testing after getting a Geforce2 card and have found that the 6.67/12.00 Dets don't crash if you don't apply the above fixes. But they do add to loading times, alt tabing etc, which can be annoying.

Also if you get Pink screens in PU then Enable Fog Table Emulation in you Vid card setup in D3D.

Edit something has changed in Dets 12.20-40's they need the above fixes on my system now, so maybe best to use the above fixes as a standard setup if using PU with a Geforce/2 card. Not heard if Geforce 3 cards have the same problem yet

I'll try a couple of those i've not tried yet, thanks. It doesn't seem to have any particular pattern with the lockups. I've finished races before and then sometimes I don't finish them. I'm gona try turning down the car detail next as well.

I was gona do evo again to get the cars in NFS PU for online, but I may not bother now. I locked up that race online this weekend, that's what happened. :) Most of the lockups are software locks, I can alt-tab out and kill the porsche.exe and I'm fine.

You can also check out www.rage3d.com and try the "unofficial" drivers for the Radeon. This worked for me and I did not encounter any problems with that drivers (yet ??).

If its only some tracks, then maybe its the sky textures, see TM site for the link too the BAT file util.

I get random crashes without changing the textures on:

Infrequently on Zone forward in between the 2 jumps
Normandy all the time backwards, very occasionally forwards
any MC track with the ship.

I still sometimes get them, but usually if I host and have a full pit.

Mmmm
I often got done on Auvergne bkws.. right near the start.
Norm fwd.. before race even starts
and Zone bkw, nearing half-way stage, just before small straight with the overhead pipes.. now with my new graphics card had no problems.. :)
