Yeeehaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!

I woulda been happy with a 1:10:xx @Glen having spent hours of practice getting slowly out of the 'teens'.... 1:12 last night

then this morning.. 1:11:97,,, followed by a 1:11:01!!!!!!!

I felt, for sure, that I could get into the high 1:10's

Couldn't believe my eyes when the lap time came up:

1:09:78!!!!!!!!!

Hi Hank. that is great! I see finally that there is someone who is going at my pace. When I first started I could not drive the Glen for anything. Let me rephrase that I was able to drive it but was not able to find any speed. This is still the case. When I read people like Chey doing 106"s in a week. I say OH MY. Just hang in there. It took me months to get respectable and I am still not there yet.:beer:

It's been 10days now.... so much to do.... so many downloads.. so many tracks to learn...

I started at Monza.... but couldn't get the speed on the straight and still slow enough to make both bends.... haven't tried for a couple of days, 'cos Glen took my focus..... I might have a go in this here Ferrari and see if I'm better now :))

Then I had a go at the Ring... LOL

couln't get under 12:00... again, I think I could now :))

but if i cant get under 10:00 then it's back to Glen for me :)))))))


I'm SURE I can get a 1:08 with the right setup adjustments :))))))))))

The ring trainer is a good way to learn the ring. Also raising the ride height helps. 3.25 at both ends or 3.25 front, 3.50 rear are popular setups. Front toe out at -.125, rear toe in at +.200 to +.300 will help. I'll have to check out the rest of my setup later (at work right now).

When I used the ring trainer, I learned the sections in reverse order. As I progressed, I could then continue into a section I had learned with warmer tires, or continue on and finish the track from where I had started from.

The ring is also a rough track. In addition to learning the 174 corners, you need to learn where the dips and bumps are that upset the car. I have to coast over the bad spots to maintain control.

I haven't found a good article on how setups affect performance but this is what I've learned from my own experience:

Rear toe in setup seems to be the key setup parameter for me, in combination with the rear differential. Lower rear toe in and/or higher coast ramp on the diff causes car to oversteer more, reducing or eliminating the need for braking in corners, as oversteer causes a car to scrub off speed in a corner, so only throttle is needed to adjust speed while cornering. This is good for tracks like Spa (I use .025 rear toe in at spa, along with a 85/45/4 diff), or Zandvoort, where I use more toe in, but use a 85/45/4 diff setting. On the other extreme, with tracks like Kyalami, powering out of corners is more of an issue, so I use +.250, and 85/30/4 diff). Front toe out is still a mystery to me, so I go by other's setups, or just set it to -.125.

I've found that the toe values in the GH2 setups are a good place to start for me. Some of the older GH setups seem to be pretty extreme. The rest of the GH2 setups are meant for experts that use throttle while braking, so I don't use those values.

I generally set wheel rates to 120/85 or 120/90, then increase the front rate if the front temps are colder. I start off with sway bars at 150/150 or 160/160, to reduce the amount of camber required, since more camber can make a car unstable. I adjust rear toe so the car handles the way I want. I then adjust rates, bars, shocks, and camber to get the tire temps evened out, with the rears running just a tad hotter than the fronts. Note that sway bars are going to follow the toe rates. With less rear toe-in, you should have more rear anti sway bar than front, like 180/130. With moderate rear toe in (like +.125), the bars will end up fairly even. With high rear toe in (like +.200 or more), the front sway bar will have a higher rate than the rear.

I run height at 2.50 for almost all tracks, except for the ring, where I raise the car up to 3.25 or 3.50. Note, any difference between front and rear suspension settings is magnified with a higher ride.

I spent most of my September "game time" working on my GPL rank, then took a break (messing with NFSPU car setups and file data). I'll probably start back on GPL again soon.

@Glen in Ferrari with -.50 front toein and +1.00 rear

I'll have to try your suggestions and see if that makes much diff.

I noticed on the in-game replay that the driver got a pretty good speed up and kept it there... I felt good with the above setup but i'm not sure yet what gears to setup to get max acceleration and topspeed ( I got up to about 178 on the two straights at Glen...)

Also I thinkI used 15:1 wheel thingy.. helped me slide around them big bends like the guy inthe replay :))

I find that higher negative front toe-in and higher postive rear toe-in helps me get around corners better. On tight tracks I use about -.275 front toe-in and +.125 rear toe-in. On tracks like Spa and the Ring I have much lower settings.

As far as ride height goes, I use 3.75 at the Ring and 3.00 or 3.25 at Spa (mainly due to Eau Rouge). On most other tracks it is 2.50.

The diffs I am currently using are 85/45/6 and 85/60/4. I find that I need 85/60/4 to get heavier cars like the Honda around the tighter tracks. However, I still use a 60/85/1 diff on the Honda at Spa :D

The stiffness settings are the lowest I can use without slamming down on the bump rubbers. On most tracks I can get away with bump and rebound settings of 2/2 front and 3/3 back. Spa is a track I find I need a slightly higher setting - 2/3 front and 3/4 rear.

Having said all this setups are a very personal thing ;)

I'm now starting to learn Greger Huttu's setups, the ones with differential ramps in the 45/60/xx up to 30/85/xx...&(

At the beginning it's very difficult, you spin at every corner and can't brake straight, but then slowly you start to enjoy it and make wonderful fast slidings through the long turns... So funny to keep the car sliding on gas :D

Overall I'm not fast enough yet, with those extreme settings, but it's nice to learn them...I'm now improving my "style" and laptimes with diff. ramps in the range of 60/45/xx

Tox, I used those setups and Jonathon Davis's Ferrari setups for a few months to learn better car control and then went back to more conservative setups like those I mentioned above. I found that I was a lot quicker having done that :D

I need the more conservative setups for consistency in racing. I crash too much with the alien setups for them to be a realistic option for racing :(
