View Full Version : Chey's hosting problem...

Hey guys, Chey was trying to host a race last night on VROC, and she managed to get the right ports to open on her gateway/router to race, but not the right ones to host (no thanks to me either... I must have some sort of brain drain going on :p ). I know I had looked around when I had the same problem, and Andy Wilkes ended up telling me what port I needed to open... I gave Chey all my open ports but she still had a yellow square and I was unable to join :(

Anyone here know what settings to need to configure to host a server behind a router/gateway/firewall? Apart from the regular ports for racing, of course.

Thanks

Hank

I just tried and had same prob :((

The 'host' menu button wasn't enabled....

It's all so new to me, so I'm not overly fussed hehe.....who would want to embarrass themselves this early really ;)

I just managed to get down to 1:14 @Glen in Eagle... weird setup.

Long way to go for me yet... but I am undaunted :)))))))))))

Would be fun to get it going online though for just a wee look at it all..... looks far more complicated than PU :)))))))))

anyways.... back to practicing :)))))))

Ok, if I remember correctly, Chey has 2 problems to overcome. Zone Alarm and her Router.

As far as the ports for gpl on the router, this is straight from the readme11.txt:

GPL now uses a range of 21 consecutive ports ([32766..32786], by default) for client/server communications, and ports 6970 for status broadcast and 6971 for ping responses.

So...forward the range of 6970-6971 and 32766-32786. When Ive hosted behind my router with these settings the only problem is that the race show up with the orange box in VROC. Only thing this means is that VROC cant ping the server correctly. However, once in GPL, the latency and quality bars at the top right still work because 6970 and 6971 are forwarded.

As far as Zone Alarm goes, she may have to just disable it. It might be kinda tough getting the correct permissions for other machines to access her gpl session. Zone Alarm would just interpret this as a type of intrusion on a certain port with a certain program. Chey, you will have to figure that one out on your own...sorry. ;) Good luck to ya though.

John,

Those are the ports that we actually had open, from the same readme source. I think I have the same setup as you (Linksys Cable/DSL Router + ZoneAlarm) and I remember that I was able to join without problem but could never host about 6 months ago. Then one day, I was complaining about it on VROC when Andy Wilkes tells me to open another port... and it works, even though ZoneAlarm was still running. I can't for the life of me remember which one is which though.

Hmmm come to think of it, I think he told me a port that was just outside one of the ranges I already had open... yes I think that was it... which means that she does have it open. So there's got to be something...

Anyway, I think her two main problems right now are a program crash on entering the race and she needs to update her car gfx at least hehe I don't think I could stand running all original gfx for very long. Just update the Lotus and... say. Watkins Glen, try it out and you'll agree, you will like them, so you'll see! Would you like them at the Ring? Would you like them, make you sing? I would not like them at the Ring, I would not like them, nor will sing, I do not like new view and skin, I would not like them, sir Myshkin.

Okay just call me Dorko Seuss ;)

I wrote a reply for Chey, but in the wrong thread (http://www.racerplanet.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=46748#post46748). Sry :")

Wow, thanks everyone! Yes, VROC was an absolute blast! I loved every minute of it. I beat the Papy at Silverstone with the default setup and lowered my Ring by a full second ( ^_^ ) won a race and actually qualified first four times. I also got out of the way of the faster drivers whenever possible. Ah, I'm in love! I'm expecting to be arrested, though. Anything this much fun can't be legal!

Yes, I was having bizarre lockups and I could "host", but no one could join. I did find that shutting off everything i've got running in the background seemed to fix the lockups. That included ZA which I only use basically for the application privileges. I suspect that I will find that I can host now.

Absolutely right, WCvXd. Good old ZA was just not replying to the incoming signals. Well, hey, that's sort of what it's supposed to do. I could fix it by changing the security levels, but it's just easier to disable it for VROC.

So far, with VROC, I find a lot of folks i n the lobby, but not that many "racing". Hmm, probably the hours, very early morning pacific time for the most part, which I'll be on most of the week (those hours ,that is). Still it's wonderful and amazing. I love it all!

Chey a lot of guys just seem to hang out there and chat with friends :) Some are just waiting for a track to come up that they want to race. Others might be waiting for a practice session to start. I usually only go to race and if I can't find a good race I leave ;)

I'll look for you on there and maybe we can have a race or two -^

Congrats on the Silverstone time :D

Well, I see what you mean there. Personally I only know 3 tracks where enough to even drive them. I intend to remedy that very soon however. So for me, I was mostly looking for the Glen, the Ring and Silverstone.

I did meet some very good (and unusual &( ) people on VROC last. Did some chatting. I like the atmosphere, generally.

Myshkin, "Seuss", hmmm, maybe! "Dorko", never!

Tox, yes, I have hosted IP races in NFS. I do have a public IP. I sure hope you can get a good connection and one where you are on the "internet" and not an ISP's private network. Gaming is far too good to miss out!

Great to hear you had fun in VROC Chey :)

I think as well as the ports that John mentioned there are a couple of others, I've a feeling they are just for control (BOSS access) but perhaps not...

Try it without ZA running, and I'll find that port out now...

port 32000 TCP
port 6968 - 6971 UDP (or 6969 - 6971)
port 32766 - 32786 UDP

Here's a thread for you to look into...

Laters, hope this helps... looks like you may just need to disable ZA for the time being...
