That really depends on the track, corner and so on.Shifting up is fairly easy,Red-line all the way.And also you would have to be specific with the game you are talking about aswell.

Shift up right when you hit the redline, shift down at about 4-5,000 RPM depending on the car your in. Don't make un-needed shifts because during a shift the transmission is disengaged for a split second, and you may lose a mph or so. If you are going up a hill and you are at the redline, don't shift up, unless it's not that steep, or if you are driving a very powerful car, like a Ferrari F50, McLaren F-1, or Mercedes CLK-GTR. A Z3 will lose speed if you upshift going up a fairly steep hill. If you stay in the same gear, you won't be disengaging the transmission for that split second. As I said before, you may lose a mph or two while you shift, especially on a hill.

Here's the way I do it, shift up at redline (as said before) and shift down when at 2000 to 3000 rpm below the redline.

I shift at the red line and i use my ear for shifting down. if the motor gets really deep in sound, i shift down. but thats just my style
