Thanks Mate! :)
The buddy list that you're referring to is the one of racerplanet forum? Or is it some other hidden secret of GPL, like the GPL rank or something like it, that I'm still trying to understand in full.... :D
I think you're the only one in my buddy list in GPLRank, I tried it only as test but don't know what's its use for... &(
BTW, what's the handicap and how do you calculate / update it on GPLRank?

Oh, well.... I'm still training with F2 and offline, and don't think I'll update to F1 or go online before the end of the holiday :") (also because I'm leaving for them in a few days and will have no PC there, just mountains and nature ;) )
I'm a total noobie, I fear. Jim Clark is doubling me at every race and I still struggle with race starts when I happen to be in the middle of a 20 drivers grid...:") :") :")
I have also a F3 driver but felt unconfortable with it, do you think I should race it before moving to F2?
Do I need different profiles in GPLRank for F2, FD and son on? Isn't this confusing for the buddies? Are FD and FG actually useful/popular? I made a visit in VROC and saw only GP races and a few F2 servers that were always empty... I can't imagine about FD and FG then!
Sorry, many questions, I'm a noobie I told you :D

Could you add me to your buddy list (JeffR). Just recently got GPL, but didn't really start playing it untill this month. Working on getting my 107% at all the tracks, usually get one or two tracks a day. Spent 3 days on the ring, (9:14 so far), but went onto the other tracks. The only other one left is Zandorf (probably get this tomorrow). My current GPL rank is 111.04, a ways to go.
It's a fun game, but I'm using my same two joystick setup as I do for other racing games, so I don't have concurrent control of throttle and brake (not sure if this is a big deal or not).
My persona for GPL rank is the same as usual, JeffR.
I'd like to add the other NFS PU types also.

Hey Tox and Jeff, I'll add you guys to my buddy list when I go to GPL Rank next time. I hardly ever go there now, as I have given up hot-lapping and can't match my PBs anyway. It's a real bummer when you get slower instead of faster

The buddy list that you're referring to is the one of racerplanet forum? Or is it some other hidden secret of GPL, like the GPL rank
It's the buddy list on GPL rank web site. Note, be sure to hold down the <ctrl> key when adding buddies, else it will clear out all the other selections.
What's the handicap and how do you calculate
The handicap is based on the times of the replays included with GPL. If you add up the times for all tracks in the replays, the sum is 25 minutes and 20.22 seconds. Your handicap is the sum of all your best laps minus the 00:25:20.22 papy reference time. The fast players have negative numbers.
Go to GPL Rank (http://newgplrank.schuerkamp.de/) and click on the GPL Rank FAQ link.
how do you update it on GPLRank?
Click on submit lap times. It will show a dialog box, with a browse button. Browse to:
sierra\gpl\players\<your name>
click on player.ini, then click on upload.
Note, you need lap times on all tracks to have a GPL rank (handicap). Just to fill in the blanks, I took the Braham, pressed <F10> to see from behind (easier to follow the track if you're not trying to learn it), and submitted this, ending up with a rank over 300. I then started using the Ferrari (with in car view) with the goal of getting within 107% of the papy reference times for each track. I've done this now for all but Zandvort and Nurburg (the ring). Except for Nurburg, I've been doing one or two tracks a day (just started this month). I spent 3 days on Nurburg to get down to a 9:14 (174 turns a lot to learn), and went on to complete the remaining tracks. I'll get back to Nurburg once I finish Zandvort. Once you get down to 107% on all tracks, your GPL rank will be about 100.

Cool ! I visited the site and added a few mates to the Buddy list... ...a very long list of racers!!!
It's amazing, how this ranking simply trusts the ppl not tweaking the INI file by hand! This is fair racing! Just forget about all those cheaters in PU pits...
If all the world could be like that -^ -^ -^
I'll post my 400+ ranking as soon as I have one...Lol

a very long list of racers!!!
Not sure how many are active, but it seems to have a bigger following than Need for Speed. However, for online play, I like the short sprint nature of Need for Speed, both HS and PU. I don't plan on running 2 hour races anytime soon.
It's amazing, how this ranking simply trusts the ppl not tweaking the INI file by hand!
Yes, it's nice isn't it. I've found the same thing true of NFSHS, maybe because of the scoring system for NFSHS online (you can't lose points to another player). For GPL, only the world records require replays. I'm not sure what the standards are for online races, but if handicaps are used, you don't want too good a handicap.
Also, thanks for adding me to your buddy list. I am now on one player's buddy list (yours). I got my 107% at Zandorf, (1:31.44), but it took over an hour (started off with a soft setup, it wasn't working for me, so I switched to stiff setup, more clutches, and adjusted gears to match the track. Now it's back to Nurburg, which will probably take several sessions to get 107% there (currently at 9:14, need to get down to 8:57)...
P.S, you should download some of the really fast replays at some of the tracks. Check out the LOR track guide, which includes replays and setups (some of the setups will be difficult for most to use though). Unlike other racing sims I've seen, nothing is as impressive as one of the hot laps in GPL, especiallly Nurburg. I don't have a sub 8:00 replay yet, but do have a 8:03... It's amazing to see the amount of oversteer the experts use in fairly tight spots.

Tox, there is no benefit for anyone to cheat with their times. Who are they going to fool - themselves? If they want to fool themselves into believing they are faster than they really are, then let them delude themselves.
I am not driving to my current Rank and feel I should be about +30 instead of +5.63. I have had a few good races on VROC and even won a race at Monza in the Honda - only two of us finished out of six starters :D
I really enjoy Int Short races online as they are about as long as I can maintain concentration at the best of times. They also allow you to get into a bit of a groove - especially in close racing.
Good luck

Hey,
Now I'm really looking forward to racing online!!!
I'll wait though, because at the moment I trained enough only on Monza Track and I can be competitive with AI only with Alison's "slow-AI" tweak...:") (I'm using it to be at least in the middle of the grid and learn how to manage multiplayer racing - difficult task for a c/d off PU player...;) )
I still need to go a long path before entering VROC... I'm still driving F3 and F2 sometimes, GP is still far from reach.
@JeffR:
I added you to my buddy list picking your name from "who's calling me buddy", hehe. Thanks to you too...
By the way, what are the effects of being someone's "buddy"? Is there some rule that I don't know?
You also wrote: "I'm not sure what the standards are for online races, but if handicaps are used, you don't want too good a handicap. "
What did you mean? Are there online races filtering the handicap level? I haven't noticed this feature in VROC...
Thanks a lot.

Tox, when you can do consistent laps of Monza in around 1:33 without crashing you should try the Vroom1 server for a couple of races to get the hang of it. People kind of expect a bit of carnage on that server and after the obligatory pile-up at Lesmos 1 it usually settles down to some fun racing :D
There aren't any official handicaps. Some leagues put faster guys in slower cars like the BRM to even out the competition a bit. I hardly ever drive the faster cars online because I like the Honda and Ferrari. I tend to get left behind a bit at Monza in them :)
The Ferrari is good at Watkins Glen though -^

None that I know of, other than you can quickly compare stats.
I'm (JeffR) not sure what the standards are for online races, but if handicaps are used, you don't want too good a handicap.
I wasn't sure, apparently, handicaps are not used for online racing. I thought that handicaps would be used for "league" racing, but it was a bad assumption on my part about leagues.

I'll keep it in mind, thanks. For the moment I'm about 1:36, I think, on GP cars, but I'm absolutely inconsistent (I can do 2-3 laps without going off-track, in a whole 15:00 qualifying session).
Worse of all, I can't keep away from trouble on GP cars &( , I'm sure that I'd cause a massive pile up if I go online :D
With F3 cars I can qualify & race without great trouble, with F2 I'm at an intermediate level... but I'm working on it!

Handicaps are used for all sorts of things. If you plan to join a league, the handicap will be one of the factors that goes into allowing you to join a league. Most leagues will target a certain niche of drivers, and some of the large leagues will run multiple divisions for varying skill levels usually decided upon by the drivers gplrank.
As for people that lie on their ranks.... If they try to join a league or you happen to see them online, you can almost immediately tell that they have cheated on their rank. But this is considering that this person has a very low fake rank...say -30 or less. Then its rather easy to tell when you see them drive.

Well, it's the same with PU cheaters, nevertheless they cheat themselves everytime...:(
I'm happy that this is not common in GPL, maybe because it's a game that requires skills, training, patience and consistency... ...all qualitites usually mising in cheaters :D

Mikey, I cut and pasted the people that were calling me buddy, so I think I'm not on your buddy list. My list has Michael Goodman in it.
Jeff, I'll put you in my list, thanks.
I may be wrong, but I think the times are coded somehow in the INI file. John is right though, making up times only fools the one making up the times. Also, in league racing, having a real low handicap can hurt you depending on the rules.
I just ran Reims last night for the first time. Mikey, I think you'll love that track. It's a fast circular track like Goodwood. Draft cental ;)

ps. you have to at least have a time on the standard tracks to have a GPL Rank. Being the longest, the Ring (Nuburgring) has the biggest effect on your GPL Rank.

Mikey, the easiest way to build the list is just go to "Who's calling me Buddy", and add all those people. I'm sure you're on everyone's list ;)
This is day 2 of Reims. It's not really that hard of a track to learn. I'm still in the 1:59s, but I think with some drafting partners could get lower. I know Paul's in the 1:58s at least.
That's true about how Reims can be fun.
High hopes,

Hi guys I'm back... wow this is the most activity I've seen on our GPL forum in months. I just saw you guys talking about Reims, and all I can say is "uh-oh" hehe. You remember that ugly race I had at Brands? Well I haven't raced since then :( Been on vacation, you see. Hiya Mysh, welcome back. Last night was mostly luck, but I'll take it. I think those drugs I'm taking for my root canal are keeping me calm enough to not blow engines. Sorry about the Honda engine. 5th isn't bad for someone with a blown engine. See ya next season.

Someone asked about FG & FD. The point of these cars is you get F1 grip and handling with a smaller engine. This gives you much more reaction time and breathing room, perfect for beginners.
If you use these classifications you should create a new driver for them, so you and others don't get confused or times from different classes. Remember that GPLRank's integrity and usefulness depends on you being organized. Creating new drivers also tells GPL to keep setups in separate directories, which makes your life much easier. If you need more info, just ask.
