View Full Version : People retiring from race

It does happen sometimes that ppl in your pit retire from the race (you see an "R" in the player's list), expecially when they see that they're too far behind the leading group.
I heard that they do it because, in this way, they don't lose points and that the winner won't get points from them.
Is this true?
I hope it isn't, maybe they're just retiring because they're not having much fun in the last place and want to save time for the next race...
Not that I'm winning too much, anyway, I'm only #238 in the DC ranking :") Just curious to know which is the right behaviour about retiring from races.
Thanks

Hi,
Are you talking about Porsche Unleashed? I have never seen an "R". If somebody gets disconnected or bails out of a race by hitting the ESC key, I see DNF (Did Not Finish). There are different versions of PU that are country dependant so perhaps this is one of the differences?
I have heard that DNF'ing does not stop people from losing points. I've never checked so I can't be sure.
Personally I consider it rude to purposely DNF. Being an old off-road racer, my motto is POR (Press On Regardless). However, if I see an obvious hack, I will DNF and add his name to my "avoid" list. Just recognize that some of the DNF's may be due to lost connections and ping spiking. I'm dial-up too so I do know the problem!

It's DNF on my version too. The question about points was asked to an EA rep. before (I believe it was MrCoffee) and he said that people who DNF races DO get their points taken away. They are aware that some people will disconnect unintentionally (ISP cuts them off.. etc) but they just take a "that's a shame, oh well" stance on it. Your points will get taken away regardless (unless the servers themselves crash or something.. then who knows). Some people get frustrated or are a bit high strung, especially after crashing, and can't come to grips with driving any further, so they DNF (I rarely do this. I keep on going almost no matter what. There's always a chance that some people will DNF and I can get a few more points (or lose a few less.. heh) if I keep on going. I pick up several positions in GPL with this method. It's a hard game and people spin off the track a lot and get into other accidents and I pick up many positions just waiting for it to happen.)
Anyway, there's also another interesting thing to observe: the latency dots. When a person is lagged (has a high ping) the dot next to their name on the opponents list will become red. If the connection is OK, but not the greatest, it's yellow. The better connections will show with a green dot. But the interesting thing to watch is when a person DNFs. If the dot is white, it means they're still in the pit. If the person leaves the pit (or got disconnected, which means they aren't in the pit anymore anyway...) the dot is black (or maybe it just disappears... I just call it black, though.. heh). I'm not sure how many people have noticed that one, but I have :)

Yes, I meant PU and I don't have an English version, so that's because I read "R" and not "DNF".
Anyway, I specifically meant people that pressed ESC to finish the race when they're too far behind (They had green/yellow dots and I found them in the pit waiting for the next race, so it wasn't a connection problem).
I also consider it a bit rude and never do it (after all, arriving last is part of the newbie's job :D ).
But, because I saw some players doing it, people that during the rest of the session were much correct, I started thinking that the thing wasn't a "point cheat" (as you confirmed) but just the will to end a poor race. On the contrary, it can be seen as a gentle behaviour towards other players, that otherwise should wait for the last one before starting the next race...
thanks for the answer
