Okay folks, following the advice I just gave Mysh over his faulty HDD, experience from my own history of killing many HDDs, I thought it time for everyone to bring out their old Hard Disc Drives and try to put new life into them.

Yes grab that ol' Quantum door stopper or Samsung paper-weight, wipe the spder-webs from the Fujitsu or whatever HDDs you may have six feet under and slot it back into the case for one more crack of new life.

:soap: Rev. Acster is here to convert the non believers and heal the dead. Praise the HDD Lord and rejoice brothers and sisters.

I have found the mothership of Bad sector repairers for many HDD makes.

Fujitsu (http://www.fujitsu-europe.com/support/disk/software/erase.zip)

IBM (http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm)

Maxtor (http://www.maxtor.com/Softwaredownload/utilities.html)

Quantum (http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/download/software/zdisk101.zip)

Samsung (http://samsungelectronics.com/hdd/support/downloads/attach_file/clearhdd.exe)

Seagate (http://www.seagate.com/cgi-bin/discwiz.cgi)

Western Digital (http://www.wdc.com/support/download/dlg/dlgdiag.zip)

For it is written:
hardware secrets 1:8 The bad sectors are not "removed", but only listed in this defective sectors list, making the operational system to ignore them.

If after this procedure new bad sectors start to arise, you should replace the hard disk, since its magnetic media is not ok.

The faulty hard drive owners seeked the good word of Rev. Acster. They thought that this was good and so it was good. amen. :D

Hope many can make good use of these links.

Well Rev, unfortunately Maxtor's diagnostic utility didn't do anything for me... once the drive stopped working after the first refrigeration, even after refrigerating and even freezing it has not worked again... after freezing (literally I mean, not frozen screen) it even gave me a 'hard drive failure' message, and the Maxtor software did not even recognize it.

At least I got almost everything off of it :)

Mysh : Have you tried the Fitness Test of IBM?

http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm

I know it works and it also detects other HDD makes (it picked up my new Seagate) but I haven't tried it on that HDD as it's not faulty.

Thank you Acca!!!!

I just upgraded my M/B and CPU to an AMD XP 1800+. I also added a Maxtor 80 GB UDMA 133 hard drive with the Maxtor adapter card.

The Windows logo screen shows for about 2 seconds. I'm in Windows about 5-10 seconds after that. Then Windows would only use compatibility mode drivers and the drives would slow to a speed commensurate with a Commodore 64 floppy drive. (Ok. I jest. LoL)

Thanks to your links, I was able to locate the updated Maxtor drivers. The HD performance has almost tripled, according to the SiSoft Sandra index.

Now if you could just work your magic on The Phone Company, who just upgraded my 56K phone lines from about 40 Kbps to 20 Kbps. =(( And about 10 retrains per minute.

Hmm, sounds like they're already doing the trendy FAT 16 shuffle grind. So much for originality.

But it could be worse ol' man. They could give you a connection like my cable. Most times I can only dream of 20 Kbps. And about 10 retrains per minute.

Unfortunately the last bit wasn't a joke. :( My lady only lives 4 doors away and her son has the same cable company as I with the same card and cable modem, yet his connection loads webpages instantly and mine is no better at that than my old dialup ISP @ 56k. I am not exagerating when at times I say it is even slower than 56k.
But on the up side they only charge me three times as much for the priveledge of saying "I have cable internet" :D .... and that's what really counts ... isn't it? :(

Glad to hear that atleast one of those links helped someone. -^
