The city of Atlanta has had quite a few problems with its water system over the years, and leaking mains in have caused sinkholes in certain parts of town.

That is what happened in this case. The poor guy just stopped at a redlight and the weight of this truck was just too much for the crumbling infrastructure.

Believe it or not something like that actually happened to our garage floor.Years ago, when our house was built(1956) The builder poured the cement floor for the attached double garage without checking the condtion of the ground at that spot.:look: Not long after the original owner moved in,the weight of his car parked in the garage broke through the floor and into a hollow cavity underneath! We have had 2 cars parked in there every day for the past 12 years,so I don't thnk we have any worries, but can you imagine the look on that poor guy's face when he went to get in his car in the morning?? =(( :help:

Well lets see here.

In Oregon we have a max weight of 105,500lb. limit befor you have to carry, what I would call extremweight permits (one way only).
For regular 4 axle trucks and 4 axle trialers its 105,500  lbs. Plus you can't go over 53 feet on the trailer, max legnth for the truck and trailer is 65 feet (or you get a over-lenght permit). For a 4alxe truck and a 4 axle trailer you can only push the weight this far: 9000lbs. on the steer axle, about 5000lbs.(I could be wrong) on the drop axle, and about 40,000lbs. on the drivers. I don't quite know the limits on the the trialer. Normally about the best you can do is 99,000 lbs.(hauling Pepsi). There are many limitations on trucks especaily weight.

That sinkhole was a cause of poor upkeep on the pipes, or they shoulda been replaced a long time ago.

Heheh, that is kinda funny. I know our roads here in Calgary get really bad in the spring when all the snow melts. I recall reading about a van that went to drive through a puddle, only to be ensnared in a 3 foot deep 8 x 8 pool in the middle of the road. Talk about pot holes!

Lots of things were fixed for the olympics in the early 90s, but unfortumately most of the “fixes” were of the “plant shrubs, polish and paint stuff, and sweep the rest under the rug” nature. The new mayor does seem more focused on these problems, so we’ll see.

A few things:

The truck was loaded with about 15 tons of concrete.

The hole was 13’ wide and 15’ deep

The hole was caused by a broken line 10’ deep.

Not far from this incident in 1993 two people were killed and four cars and 200’ of pavement were swallowed in a similar fashion when a hotel parking lot collapsed.

I guess it's not every day you see a tip truck with a 15 ton load do a wheel-stand. Great time to do a wheel change. :D
I wonder if all of that landfill he was carrying was for pot-hole repairs?
Imagine being behind him at the lights when it happened. You would think he was emptying his load on you. :look:

DPK : Good point about the bus load of school kids.
