View Full Version : I'm thinking of getting TDU..

With all the messages here, I'm thinking of getting TDU.

Will it run okay on my PC? (see below)

Intel Core 2 Quad QX6700 2.66ghz
Intel Desktop Board D975XBX2
2GB DDR2 1066mhz ram
Nvidia 8800GTX 768mb PCI-Express X16 (with latest drivers)
Creative Sound Blaster XFI
250+300gb HDD.
Windows XP Pro SP2
DirectX 9 (latest version)
Lexmark MarkVision Professional v11.0

Also, is the car handling really worth using a steering wheel (ie, sim-like), or is it NFS like and floaty and therefore only needs a keyboard for control?

Well, I laughed when I saw this post, but then again, I have heard some people with high end computers complain of slow performance, particularly with NVidia cards. But I don't think you'll have any problem getting a drivable frame rate at a high detail level and resolution.

Also, the latest NVidia drivers tend to cause more problems than the older ones. I'm running 92.91 on my laptop. You may have to experiment with drivers to get one that gives fast performance without having graphics glitches.

The physics is in the ballpark of NFSPU, so a wheel is beneficial. I've opened up some of the handling files, and the headers indicate that TDU is using pacejka as its tire model, though it is a unrealistically forgiving pacejka model.

There is a hardcore mode that gives a more realistic/authentic handling model, and a control-panel showing some base-forces and tire/suspension reactions. With a steering-wheel you can set the steering-ratio (called sensitivity in the game menu) to fit the full turns lock-to-lock of a G25-wheel and using the full steering-lock of the car and using manual clutch that's needed to change gears, wether using sequential or H-shift mode.
Some of the cars however have very wrong gear-ratios making them hard to drive, Corvette, Viper, GTO (Monaro) and co. are included in that since their gear-ratios are way lower than the real cars and that makes wheelspin overly easy, unlike other cars where the ratios seem more authentic from my checks. Other cars have them a little too high, like the Esprit although that only makes it easier to start without wild wheelspin even in tuned mode enabling the car to really fly smoothly and sharply thrue corners like the real thing is known for.

I'll see if I can get hold of it then. :)

I don't think I can use older Nvidia drivers - the 8800 seems to run only with the newer 96 and 97.xx drivers.

If you have problems running it at high res with AA, it is a driver problem, not a hardware problem. Your system kicks my system's butt, and I can run it at 1600X1200 with 2Xaa.

It does have a little glitch on mine though. I have an nVidia card, and probably 80% of the time, I have to make a small change (move it up or down a res level or change the AA) because it starts out with the gfx a little messed up. I can change it to something else, then change it back, and it works fine. I am using the 93.71 drivers, so I might try changing that to see if I can get it to stop acting weird.

On whether you want to play this game or not, if you like the arcade-like feel of PU for fun, which is better than most of the non-sim games IMHO, then you will probably like TDU. The fact that it is a real place that seems pretty accurately rendered is nice, the gfx are pretty good, but I will defer to Frank about accuracy of the car sounds. I haven't had it crash on me yet, the biggest negative for me right now is that the online servers seem to go down a lot, but you can play offline. Unlike PU, there is no IP to IP options as far as I can tell.

Handling is more "floaty" than a sim, and both Justin and Frank can use the keyboard... but I still much prefer a wheel. I don't care if using a keyboard would make me faster, but if I had no option...

I give it a thumbs up despite the server issues.

Mysh, try Alt-Tabbing back to the desktop, then back to TDU. I get vertical red stripes in the sky most times when I start TDU, and going back to desktop fixes it quicker than messing with video settings.

chris you should get this, if it is only for the nice shiny car models its already worth it ;)

I was online a lot lately but did not see anybody from here anywhere. The online part seems rather awful but even the singleplayer missions keep you busy for some days.

That hardcore mode is quite silly isn't it? I was driving the Zonda and it was understeering like crazy and under braking even at very low speed it was sliding off the road like it was going on ice. Havent tried much else in hardcore mode as it disables all the missions.

Fez, in myshkin's april online thread we can try and arrange a time to be online and look out for each other so we can set each other as friends like me, Mysh and Justin are so we can always find each other using the player-filter.

Besides the cars btw then there is the fantastic island to drive around on, and looking at planes from the two airports down south and the airstrip up north. There are both 4-engined airliners and smaller twins flying around with sound too. I haven't been able to enter any airport area though, yet.

You have?? The servers are back online? Then how come I can't get online? Hmm, I'm going to check my internet security programs just in case.

Hmm, I just checked my security and it still didn't work. I'll try a test-profile to see if my DCFrank one has been corrupted.

Gamespy is working since it told me I'd mistyped my account password when creating a new TDU persona, but the TestDrive server is not available for me at all. Are you sure you're online Fez? Does the players have normal stereotypical gamer-names with tons of weird spellings etc. or is it names like Daniel, Lise etc.?

Edit: Just saw your former post, yeah, but at least you and I are both keeping up good spirits, many at the official forums are mad as heck and short-tempered and mad.

Oh well, we'll try some other time okie dokie? You are right about the offline missions etc. too, there's a nice amount of things to do, besides cruising and taking pictures :)

My wife just told me to get some neat outfit if I am going to meet somebody online. She told me my avatar in leatherpants and a pink shirt looks totally gay and will not make a good first impression :rotf:

PS: This thread is soooooo hijaked and turned into another crazy chitchat thread ^_^

@Myshkin
I have the same glitch with my card, a 6600 OC with 512M ram. I also have to reset settings to get rid of the problem. I had the problem with the 84.XX drivers, and the newest drivers didnt help. I just tried the 92.XX that Justin recommended - no help.

The game seems to have a consistent problem using the default 60hz refresh rate.

No problems Frank! I didn't end up buying TDU.

Instead got a 30gb iPod. :) Nice! :D Although you could spend life savings on iTunes store..

Don't believe them - they are wonderful devices! :) Just beware of the standard ear-phones, they aren't special. It's nothing that a pair of Sony noise-cancelling headphones can't fix.

They are also wonderful for those situations at work when you are trying to edit a publication and want to tune out from the rest of the goings on. :)

Just a question.. How do I accept an invitation like that? Pressing left or right arrow did absolutely nothing and the popup would not even go away until I clicked on it in the pause menu. :p

Supposedly, you should use the arrow keys on the number pad for that. It has worked for me once I think.

numpad on dell's is Fn+keys marked with numbers ie Fn+i = 5, maybe yours has something like that?

numpad on dell's is Fn+keys marked with numbers ie Fn+i = 5, maybe yours has something like that? Sure enough, I just noticed that it works just like that on this system too.. I didn't remember it was that easy though. The numbers are marked on the buttons as secondary functions. Some key combination even locks the numpad on but then I would not be able to type properly and the last time that happened by accident I didn't know how to switch it back. :help:Yes, I'm new to laptops...
