Stemmed from another thread, I took some shots of one of my trains and made a movie of it. I stole some music from RRT3 to add effect. Click the link for the download; it is relatively large (30 MB) so dialup users probably don't want to bother with it. The movie features a Candian Pacific passenger trip through a few parts of my layout. The locomotive is the 2-8-0 Consolidation, and some parts of the idle 4-8-2 on the siding in town can be seen in a couple of scenes.

Wow, that's a nice set-up there :) Reminds me of what little of a train-set I had a long time ago, Märklin HO, a german DB train and a streamlined steam-locomotive, also a german design I think. I only had a short twin-oval track layout and that's it, but it was fun while it lasted. We swapped it for the then-new micro-trains and didn't get much for it, and second-hand, and it didn't last long :(

At least now I can do something like it with the old Trainz train-sim I got from my brother (who's trainset it originally was btw), it even has the same semi-modern german train as I had a model of.

Greetings

Thanks Frank! I really like the "on board" camera shot, heheh. I actually put the camera on the top of the train to make it move along at the same speed like that. I wish I had something to stabilize the camera for the shot moving down from the sky into the town, it is a bit shaky, but still a neat effect I think. BTW, any trouble downloading it? how long did it take, and what was transfer rate?

Well, as I sit here dl'ing it now ( thanks for throwing it up! ) its coming down the pipe at about 30.7 - 33KB/s. if it stays at this rate, it will take roughly 15 mins or so . Yup, as it finished at 35KB/s, 13 mins 59 sec. Tj, that was FANTASTIC, although seeing the layout ( and EXTENSIVE artwork on the walls .... ! ) in color was nice, I think that the B&W footage was nearly incredible. DAMN good job -^

very nice indeed, my dad would watch this over & over
I had no problems d/ling it, first I just got 33 kB/sec, but then I used a Downloadmanager & got over 110 kB/sec.

@Frank: german Streamlined Lokomotive?
I bet it was the red one, the 05 001, build 1935 by "Borsig" and a topspeed of 175 km/h.

or was it: the green one? the 18 201 - the fastest steamlocomotive that is still active
(tho its not a complete Streamline)
built 1961 in Meiningen

Very nice, and a quick download as well.

I especially liked shot that allows you to see the realism of the landscape on the left and the couch on the right - a little injection of humor into the video.:)

That reminds me - I knew a guy where I used to work that was into the model train hobby. He somehow got tied in with a local hobbyist club, and the head guy owned a large track of land in the north Georgia mountains. One weekend of the month they would all go up there and work together on the club's track layout. I dont know anything about the gauges, but in the pictures he showed me the track rails looked to be 10 - 12 inches apart, and the cars were big enough to sit on.

So they were constructing this giant layout in the woods with scaled buildings and everything. It is obviously a long term project and it looked very cool and very expensive. I will email him today and see if he has any cool pics.

Thanks for the kind words folks!

@Kyzr, those Giant Scale railroads are pretty cool. One of the scout camps around here had one (not sure if it is still there) and yes, you could sit on it like a horse/motorcycle and ride around on it. I was just at the model train show, and there is a new club there who is having the grand opening of their giant scale train park just north of here (about a 1/2 hr drive) come this spring. They have REAL WORKING STEAM ENGINES!!! Yes, they are just like the real life full-size locomotives, only smaller. All the valves and goodies are there, and they actually run on steam. they have a Mikado 2-8-2, an American 4-4-0, a Northern 4-8-4 (this thing is about 7 feet long, 15 maybe with the tender attached. There are a couple of strange ones too. Anyway, I will be there to see the opening of this outdoor park, and I will be certain to get some videos of that event!

As a side note, Bowness Park, a city park in town here, has a very large giant scale train; larger than the typical giant scale layouts. It has been there for as long as I can remember, and the locomotive is a F3A built from a lwan tractor. The cars it pulls can be ridden in rather than on, they feature benches inside them with an open roof, much like a large train-shaped wagon. It travels all around the park, through the trees, across roads and paths etc. This train is in service all summer, so I will get some clips of that too when the season is upon us.

Sorry for the late reply, it's been a few stressed days here, again.

I can't remember how fast I donwloaded it, but when I tried again it took a long while and then it gave an error message so I can't say the speed from my end sorry.

Mario: Bingo! My green train was the red one! (hehe, it's the top one but mine was dark green :D ). Thank you for the name and info, I didn't know that, I'll copy it to a text-file so I can find it again later :)

Speaking of streamlined old german trains than my old favourite classic diesel train, the danish MA trains nicknamed "Silver Arrows" after their repaint, were high-speed trains based on a german model but shortend a little to fit on the great belt ferries. I've attached a picture of it to the post. Me and my mom travelled with them several times for the 150 km trip from my old childhood home south of Copenhagen to Odense on Fyn where my mother's uncle lived.

:) glad I could help - the green instead of red paint is due the several re-paints the locomotive had, but the original color is/was red and its red again since the last overhaul, you can see it in the DB museum
