I've been playing MW for weeks, and the police have never caught me.
Until today.
Twice.
I'm trying to break the spike strips milestone. I've got my heat up to level 4, and I keep getting boxed in between the undercover coupes and the suv's deploying the strips. Any advice?

Stay on the side of the roads, check the map for blocks occasionally and always hit the rear end of the police cars.

That's what I've been doing, but it suddenly isn't helping me.

use the speedbreaker when rhinos attack, makes all the difference in the world, also on occasion just hit the handbrake for a split second, that also seems to aid me in these tight situations.
And of course, sometimes there just aint no getting away from them......

So the problem is that you get boxed in? Try side swiping every car that passes you, so they'll think again before trying to box you in. Also, never stay too long behind a cop car, if it uses its brakes you'll hit a brick wall.

I got caught on my next three attempts, spent all my markers and money, and got my RX-7 impounded.
I rose from my seat angrily after being caught again and losing my Baron's Cayman S when I had successfully run two spike-strip roadblocks, and the wallet in my pocket snagged on my keyboard tray, rocking my desk back against the wall. About one fifth of my Matchbox car collection, which was on top of my hutch, came cascading down. It looked like the scene in 2Fast, 2Furious, when the garage doors opened and hundreds of cars streamed out to confound the police, except that the police were on my monitor, and the cascade of cars all crashed spectacularly into my desk, cell phone, sub-woofer, PC tower, router, Maisto McLaren, and alarm clock, and all of them bounced and continued to the floor.
Several of them were bought second hand. Several of them were imported from Europe at my expense. Most of them were pristine. Now, all of them have chips or scratches. :'(
I'm going to beat the hell out of those cops.

srry to hear what happened to the car collection, but what i do to prevent busteds is i turn autosave off, and then if i get busted i just load the previous save, so u never get an impounded car, loss of markers or cash penalties
back on track tho, all of the things i wud advise you to do when trying to get past spikes hav been mentioned really, but to recap;
1) use speedbreaker early enough for u to b able to aim AT THE BACK of one of the road blocking cars, this way they go flying- also NEVER hit the cars that are parked facing head on, as these will be as solid as brick walls if u hit them
2)Check map for any road blocks ahead, and if there are any alternative routes to take that still get u past the spike strip, this will count as a spike strip evade, even tho technically u didnt
also if ure having trouble with large numbers of cops surrounding you, continually drive thru pursuit breakers until u get into cooldown, then the timer until backup comes will be reset, so u wont hav as much bother with them anymore
hope this helps

just make alot of turnings. yu will do it probable inside a town not in highway.
my strategy is I usually engage the pursuit in camden beach. I try to dodged the cops by either turn right or left. that way I can avoid The Rhinos and The Spikes. I use pursuit breaker there to immobilize most of the cops.
when backup starts to come, I go to rockport wait for cops' backup and do the same.
after rockport done, I go back to camden because the pursuit breakers there are active again.\
believe me, it works for me then it will work for you. one last thing, use your All Wheel Drive Car.

Ee-yikes about damaging your Die cast car collection. I know all too well what you mean. =[
I don't know if you are still struggling with this issue, but I have found it easier to stay on the highways during the higher Heat levels, especially the ones around Rosewood. The roads are so wide there that the cops often are unable to block the entire road, so it's easier to avoid them. It makes it easier to get a lot of roadblocks with spikestrips in succession, and the risk of being caught by surprise by one of these as soon as you turn a corner is considerably less than in narrow streeted areas. Same thing goes for the Rhino SUVs.
Like Tommy1402 says, choice of car can also make a difference; awd certainly helps when you're trying to escape from a mass of copcars that are trying to close you in, with generally less wheel-spin and more surefootedness during quick evasion manoeuvres. The Porsche 996 Turbo S and Lancer EVO VIII come to mind, I was quite impressed with how controllable and quick the Green EVO was during one of the later Challenges.

Agreed. Car choice is key, and the all wheel drive models are tops. I was lucky enough to figure out that the Evo was a geat pursuit car early on. I tried the Porsche turbo at chris' suggestion and I like it as well, but my highest scores are with the Evo. I wouldnt be surprised if it is actually the best accelerating car for the first 100 yards or so.
I know that most people like the Carrera GT and Elise, and the Elise is my favorite racer, but I was busted at least twice in the Carrera with open road in front of me just because my tires were spinning and the "busted meter" topped out while I sat there.
***A strange observation, and maybe Jeff the guru can shed some light on this. While in the real world punching the nitrous on a car that is already just spinning its back tires would result in even more wheel spin, in the game punching the nitrous causes the car to hook up and go. Try it for yourself.***

Regarding car choice, avoid the ones with a low first gear ratio. The cars don't need to be all that powerful, just strong enough. Keeping your car above 30mph helps quite a bit. In pursuit mode, the cop cars seem to get heavier if you're going slower than 30.
I've used the Mustang and the DB9 in pursuit mode without too many problems.
Tips already mentioned, turn auto-save off, or hit <alt>-F4 to abort the game if you see you're gettting busted.
If you get smacked by the rhinos, go into reverse and floor it for a second or so, then back into forwards and take off again, there's almost always a gap to go through.
Personally, I prefer the highway around Rosewood, (first city), called Peterson or Highway 99. There are a few narrow sections, but also some wide sections.
As mentioned, use speedbreaker and NOS to plow through road blocks. In the case of multiple SUV's, you can use speedbreaker and shoot the narrow gap between the back of the front SUV and the front of the back SUV. For the cop cars, I aim for the rear tire instead of the rear trunk as this seems to flip the cop cars.

Ad it turned out, the key was turning off auto-save and learnign to use speedbreaker.
I'll have that 911t soon.
