Hey all.
Does anyone else play RPG/Adventure games on-line?
I've been playing Guild Wars a lot recently ( currently playing a Necromancer/Mesmer called 'Michelle Dead' )
and was wondering if anyone else played MMORG's.

I haven't tried it, yet at least, but the concept looks interesting and there are now several genres, D&D-style, fantasy-style, Star Wars, Sci-fi spacebattles and soon Star Trek too last I heard. I know Chey played two years but got burned out of it after 2 years of making furniture.
One of the game-ideas I'm playing with is also a online community, not sure if it's like MMPORPG or it's slightly more a'la MCO with walking as well but the principles are the same, a central server control and not just capture the flag or single races or such.
For those that don't know then there are several fun video from Star Wars Galaxies that can give people an idea on how things work in practical use, which is something I had no idea about since all there was were rendered trailers that doesn't really tell what the game itself is.
Greetings

I know Chey used to play "Morrowind" and I had a go at it myself, but I got bored with it and found it too 'dark' to play, both in game play and surroundings.
Guild Wars is quite different in that respect, I think it's worth playing just for the scenery, the work that has been put into the game in that case is amazing.
I'll edit some links into this post once I find the ones that have been made by the players at my favorite GW site.
The really good things about GW are that you can do most of the stuff by yourself or you can team up with people and that you don't have to pay a monthly fee like a lot of the other MMPORG's out there.
EDIT: Check out my Avatar, that's one of my GW characters, a Warrior/Monk (lvl 20), wearing the heaviest armor in game ;)
Here is a link to my favorite GW site, specifically the section called 'Exploring Tyria' (http://www.guild-hall.net/tyria01-04-06.php). It's a series of screenshots done by a single player showing the different scenery around the Nation of 'Tyria'. There are some *nice* shots in amongst them :)

I used to play Star Wars Galaxies, but not anymore. I'm going to start playing World of Warcraft probably here in the next week or two, when I get some spare $$.

I have a friend who has been trying to talk me into City of Villains for a few months now, but I think a game that costs me on a monthly basis is a little crazy - the same reason why I would never consider MCO.

Yeah, I know that most MMPORG's have a 'pay for play' system where you pay a monthly fee so you can play on their game servers.
I suggest you have a look at Guild Wars, you pay for the game and that's it, you don't pay for anything else.
I've heard of World of Warcraft, but then it I probably would have heard of it if I had been living under a rock. :p
Check out the link in my sig and then decide what you want to do, it's better to have a choice of things and the more info the better ;)

Played Ultima Online some years ago now on an unofficial server (no fee). Tried Galaxies as well, but that game is flawed. Especially after the recent revamp of the whole system.
If Dark and Light actually worked I would be playing that now (currently free since its beta), but havnīt been able too yet.
There are many MANY of these games check out www.mmorpg.com for a comprehensive list.
Auto Assault is the only racing game I can think of, but I donīt think it will work.
Currently I am creating a ship for Pirates of the Burning Sea, which is my hope right now.(www.burningsea.com)

Galaxies has gone down the tubes bad the last 4-6 months. They basically have started over and only have 1/3 of the game finished right now, at least by my book. City of Villians and WoW are the two I'm mainly interested, WoW has won out though for my $$, only one at a time for sure. heh..

I guess I've been very lucky in choosing to play Guild Wars as NCsoft hasn't just made the game and left it to flounder.
Since I started playing, they have released many fixes and mini-updates, all of which auto-download when you log on and auto-install themselves.
All you have to do is wait.
Add to that the massive "Sorrow's Furnace" (free! ) update, which is two complete new areas, plus new monsters and items, that they released and I reckon I got a good deal.
I'm waiting for the next 'chapter' of the game to come out, which is due in the 2nd quarter of this year.

Watch out for the monthly fee ;)

I guess I should say that I dont think that its bad or wrong for a company to charge a monthly fee for a perpetual game like that, and I understand why people enjoy it. I just cant myself to fit a game into my monthly budget. And if I did pay monthy, I would feel the need to participate regulary in order to get my moneys worth. Having a two and four year old child to give my time to it just doesnt seem right.
As for guild wars, I have to admit that the genre just isnt my favorite. I do hope that the company does well so that they are able to continue their no monthly fee policy.:)

Ten euros/dollars a month is not that much imho. The problem for me is that once you subscribe to one you are sort of "obliged" to play the game. If you skip a week or two, you are not getting your moneys worth. Some of these types of games may sneak into your daily schedule.. Say, if there was a game that lets you build stuff, but if you don't check in every so often, the stuff decays and vanishes. :p
Some games let the players create the content, including scripting. That has been done too. Add economy and this can lead to an.. interesting online hangout with lots of player created mini-games. This is "constructive", not "destructive" like most other games. :)
One (desctructive) type, which I have never cared for much, is the "slash 'em up". Which can lead to player killing. That's not nice if you are carrying all you have ever earned in the game. :p oh.. and not to mention ebayed game items or even characters. :p
Every now and then someone comes with a new idea for a mmorpg or other perpetual online game - like some unnamed racing game. :)

Well, as far as Guild Wars is concerned, you *can't* just go around player killing, mostly because when you go 'out', as in travelling or doing missions/quests with people you are 'allied' to them and the game *won't* let you attack them!
For people who like to do, they have been catered for as well.
There is an 'Arena' sort of setup, where teams of people fight against other teams for a 'prize', 'Faction' from the God 'Balthazar' and also 'Fame' points.
When you have enough 'faction', you can go to a 'Priest of Balthazar' and buy (or unlock) extra skills for your character to use in PvP fights (Player vs Player). Note that the skills you unlock with 'faction' points are only available to your PvP charachter and not your PvE (Player vs Electrons) character.
There is also quite an active 'economy' working in game, with the prices of items changing according to how much people pay for them.
I have a 'Chaos Axe' which some people are willing to pay me upwards of 10k (ten thousand gold) for. Not selling it mind you,it's my fav Axe :p

The monthly fee comes down to me buying a new game every 3 months, which is really what I'd be doing anyways if not more if I wasn't busy playing the MMO. So montly fee's don't bother me really, but I won't do more then one MMO that has a montly fee at a time, that's for sure. :)

Was talking to some of the guys in the chat room on mIRC and decided to throw together a picture of all of my chars.

Micharus is a Warrior/Monk
Michelle is a Necromancer/Mesmer
Mickk is a Monk/Warrior
Misha is a Mesmer/Monk
Michelle and Mickk are at a place called 'Augury Rock' in the desert.
Misha is at 'Ember Light Camp' in the 'Fire Islands'. Yes, that is lava you can see in the background.
As for Micharus, well, it's late at night/early morning here and I can't remember where I took that shot. &(

I play World Of Warcraft online and enjoy the experience. It is very slow to level your character online, I casually play a hunter on the silvermoon server and after a year I haven't gotten him to 60. Guild wars though is faster to level, I've heard you can get a character to the max level in one weekend. Is this true?

Hey TMiller :)
If I remember correctly you were a big fan of MCO. The reason I bring it up is that I have noticed recently that there are aways seem to be few MCO game CDs on ebay for sale most any time I look. A few guys selling them are still copying and pasting all of the EA promotional info into their auction description, and I have only seen one out of twenty auctions where the seller mentions that the game is no longer playable.
criminal.:nono:
Anyway, I caught one auction where a person was actually bidding, and I wrote a warnig email to him about the game. He replied that he knew that the servers were closed, but that he wanted the game CD for his software collection. He was bidding $19 for it. Strange.

Yes that is true, but in order to do it you would have to play pretty much all the time.
The thing is, GW isn't about what level you are, it's more about your skill in using what you have available to you.

Hey Kyzr yes I was a big MCO fan and still wish the game was till around. It is very sad to see that people are still trying to market a game that has been caput for over two years. The movement to bring the game back has died and many people have moved on to bigger and better things. I hardly ever play racing games from the computer, I just don't have the time to master a track and then sit for a long time in online racing. I do play forza for the xbox and race at a friends house.
I still have the box and the MCO disks along with the beta disk and installation code. I also backed up all my MCO folder to two cds and put them with the original game disk. It was a wonderful game but alas good things do come to an end.
