In your opinion, what are the best games ever for PC (or Mac)?

I'm not known to be a big gamer, but Transport Tycoon with the TTDPatch enhancements and addons is simply superb! An old game that still continues to keep on being entertaining.

The Flight Sim series has been great, in creating fairly accurate representation of the world.

Also NFS5 still remains a favourite, but I think that was more to do with the community and online interactions, fun and mini competitions.

Since it's inception, the Command & Conquer series (back when it was developed by Westwood and now since it was eaten up by EA Games) has been my all-time favorite of combat games. I'm currently playing around with C&C Generals and have been having a lot of fun with it.

Of course, I must still put in a vote for Porsche Unleashed (for obvious reasons AND because I still enjoy it).

Hmm, some of my favorites...

Detroit - a business sim from about fifteen years ago. Create and run your own car company. Fairly simple game, but alot of fun for car guys.

SimCity & SimCity 2000 - SimCity for being a very original concept, SC2k for being the best of the SimCity series. I probably spent more time playing SC2k than any other game.

Stunts - a late '80s racing game that featured tracks with loops, jumps, corkscrews, etc. Came with a great little track creator.

The Need For Speed - still my favorite of the NFS series. The rest have sometimes come close, but always have some deficiency that keeps me from putting them on the same level as TNFS.

Far Cry - I suppose it isn't particulary innovative, but it is extremely well done and very addicting. I've lost track of the number of times that i've played it through. My favorite single player FPS.

Half-Life - was my favorite single player FPS until Far Cry came along.

Counter-Strike - My favorite multiplayer FPS.

Hmmm good question. It's hard to remember exactly how much I was into which games.

For FPS's, the only ones that I have played through more than twice have been Far Cry (like Justin) and Painkiller (don't know why I found that so addicting). I went through HL2 on all three levels so that is the closest other FPS.

Driving sim that I have played most? GPL, followed by NFS:PU. Only one I have played lately is NFS:MW, after GPL I can't maintain interest in any track-based sims, don't know why because I loved GPL.

I haven't been able to get into any RPG's, strategy, Sims (like -City and The Sims) or anything else. I try one out here and there, but nothing really grabs my attention for too long.

Game I have probably spent more time at than any other? Don't laugh, but it is Freecell. Starting back with Windows 95 when I discovered that 100% were winnable, and lately if I am bored on a plane, I see how many in a row I can win. Nowadays I alternate Freecell with Spider Solitaire - Two suits.

Forgot Civilisation by Sid Meier as well, another legend. But it's not quite as good as Transport Tycoon.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is an enduring favourite, most likely because of the wild ways we can add things to it. I've not come across another game or simulation of any sort with so many varied and sometimes hugely complicated addons. Some addon planes these days are probably way beyond Microsoft's wildest imagination. PMDG 747's, Level D 767's and SSTSim Concordes are something else completely with their realism.

Amazing how some planes now don't even use the built in autopilot functions - they have that programmed differently and seperate. We can even fly online with proper air-traffic-control from real people.

FS has so many addons available you'd never fit them all on the average computer, and you'd probably be hard-pressed to test them all within a life-time.

TNFS: for similar reasons to Ih8cops, Ditto for Sim City, Stunts was one of the original pc games I played as well.

I love th game Mafia and Postal 2, both are fun games, one is a lot more mature then the othr though.

Well well well :) . Its propably better to split them into genres if you want to know ALL the best games. I will stick to those that I know best.

Adventure:

Grim Fandango, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, Monkey Island 1, Full Throttle

Those are the BEST in my opinion. The first Broken Sword was good, but do not match the quality of those mentioned here. I cannot list Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle of Maniac Mansion since I´m yet to play them.

Strategy:

Railroad Tychoon II, Medieval Total War, Tropico, Commandos: BEL

Most addictive! For all of these, their newer counterparts RT3, RTW and Tropico 2 simply do not match the quality of these. Too bad Gangsters: Organized Crime had such a unsupportive interface. The concept was good in my opinion.
The original Commandoes was my kinda game. Now seen by hardcore strategy players as more of a puzzle game, I still think its the best in the serie.

Driving:

Driver 1, TNFS, Mafia, GTA: Vice City

The original Driver was tough, but one of the few games that "got it right" when it comes to controlling your car. Not good by todays standard though.
TNFS - need no introduction :) . And Mafia. Another game that not only "got it right" but which also had a story that wasnt only sucky sucky.
Of the newer GTA games I still like "Vice" the best. Its something about the feel again. And the hilarious radio commercials ^_^ .

Others:

RUNE, Deus Ex, , Vietcong, MOHAA, H&D 1+2

If there is one game thats FUN in multiplayer with a couple of friends it must be RUNE. Have never really been anything like et ever since. Deus Ex was really a different experience although a bit action oriented.
The very BEST sound I have ever heard in a game must be from Vietcong. Its really something in multiplayer, and the singleplayer experience very different(no Call of Duty one man army here).
Ahh and the original Medal of Honor. Kinda drowned in WWII games now. This one was king when it was released. Probably topped by Call of Duty or Brothers in Arms now. Havn´t tried them. I got enough of WWII a couple of years ago lol.
Before MOHAA there was Hidden & Dangerous. A game like Commandoes but in 3D. Action and objectives. Despise its numorous bugs I think they really catched that "feel" of WWII movies (the classsic ones).

That about covers it for now. I could speak all day he he.

Carmack spawned (sorry;) ) the FPS industry, and of his creations Quake and Quake2 are my favorites.

I also like the Age of Empires series for strategy.

Lemmings.-^ :)

I remember lemmings in school on the Mac's they had, that was great fun. lol :)

Other games, I dunno, I enjoyed NFS PU a lot for racing, i've played others but they really never kept me like it did. Although Screamer 2 for DOS was a great game and did really well for the pre-3d era games, played that with my brother and uncle in mulitplayer mode on a LAN at home, great fun. I really enjoyed NFS MW but it's not had the staying power PU did as yet.

Battlefield 2 is my favorite FPS right now, great game, I also enjoyed a Quake3 mod called Urban Terror for a while. I remember the original Doom on a floppy disk as well.

I played Star Wars Galaxies a lot for the last year but that's been downhill the last 5 months or so. I remember playing Kings Quest back in the DOS days with like 12 floppy disks to install it. lol

Favorite star wars games have to be KOTOR and KOTOR2.

Heh, Lemmings. I remember that game, quite fun. :)

As for my favs, racing wise, my vote goes for NFS: High Stakes, mainly for editability of the cars and tracks, that continue to this very day, despite the game being almost seven years old.

I also like PU, for the driving, and community. Action-wise, my fav is the Doom series, stemming from Doom I on my old 486 in '93 to Doom III. Dune, and Starcraft are probably my favourite strategy games.. I still play Brood wars (Starcraft) on my machine from time to time.

And like Justin, I'd say Counterstrike is my favourite FPS game, though I haven't played it in awhile..

SimCity & SimCity 2000 - SimCity for being a very original concept, SC2k for being the best of the SimCity series. I probably spent more time playing SC2k than any other game.

Far Cry - I suppose it isn't particulary innovative, but it is extremely well done and very addicting. I've lost track of the number of times that i've played it through. My favorite single player FPS. Wow, those are all my favourites too. I remember Stunts from way back and when I used to swap self-designed tracks with a friend of mine. SimCity2K was great but it crashes often on my current system.. oops, sorry, I have played SimCity3000 World Edition and the original only.

I'll add Quake which I played a lot online and used to kick some butt regardless of the fact that I got shot at a lot too but negative frags were not counted in FPS games back then..

And Railroad Tycoon III which adds free angle track laying to the original game.

And the whole Thief series which create quite an atmosphere for an "FPS" game but with less killing involved.

Myst/Riven is also a classic in slow paced puzzle solving games..

I loved Dune, but was put off by the remakes..

From Old classics I would name Tetris and Pacman, lol. I also remember playing quite a few Sierra adventure games in 80/90's..

Tuukka

Edit: Forgot about Civilization. A classic turn-based strategy game. The later games in the series add complexity in the number of units, tribes and available techs, which is good.
