View Full Version : What monitor-frequency does the A1200 send out?

My old scart-cable has been damaged for a long time so I was wondering if I can find a 17" monitor that could show the frequency range of the old but still functional and nice 1200 so I can play some old games and such. I've tried it with the Philips 107S I've had for 5 years now but it says it can't show the frequency range (Note: there is a converter-plug to VGA plug that came with the old 1940 multi-sync monitor I had before it broke so I don't have it any more).

Q. What specifications does a multisync monitor need to work with the A1200?
A. Ideally, you need it to have a sync range from 15 kHz to 31.5 kHz or higher. Digital presets are very helpful because they allow you to set screen size and centering for all the different screen modes.

I looked on the Viewsonic website, and most of their CRT monitors sync between 30khz-50khz, too high for the Amiga.

Thank you very much Justin, this is very helpful and I didn't even know that site existed until now.
Edit: Justin I was wondering, did you find this in 5 seconds by using a search-engine and if so, what kind of keywords did you use? The last couple of years I've had increasing problems finding something that others then find in 5 seconds. Any tips? I kind of feel lazy and dumb not being able to find anything anymore that others can fast.
Greetings :)

you'll be hard pushed to find a monitor that'll sync to the Amiga. There used to be one by Microvitec but I can't rmember the model number. You could try and purchace a ScanMagic external scan doubler & flicker fixer and you can then use ANY PC monitor... but it'll probably cost you an arm and a leg... thats if you can STILL get one ofcourse :) Hope that helps
I have a old Commodore montior still around here, infact I think we have two, however postage costs would be incredibly high and I'm sure there would be more then a few commodore/amiga monitor's around still, otherwise just plug the thing into your tv as lots of commodore people used to do.

Thanks for the replies. The problem with the TV is that my scart-cable connector that goes out from the integrated flicker-fixer in the A1200 is broken so I have to use the antenna cable and it's very blurry, and even worse, the Workbench setup was set for higher frequency for the Commodore 1940 multisync monitor I had so the TV can't show anything but a black screen when I boot from the Workbench install on the hdd, that's why I was wondering if I could find a monitor, at least just in 15" size since 13" is microscopic, even for an Amiga resolution.

to fix your booting from the HDD problem is easy (I am sure I explained this to you before?)
(1) Boot with your workbench floppy.
(2) When WB has booted, open your HDD icon and navigate to Devs/Monitors
(3) MOVE whatever the driver is in there to you HDD somwhere. eg. Storage/Devs/monitors
(4) Copy the Pal driver from Storage/devs/monitors to Dev/Monitors.
(5) remove the floppy and reboot the amiga et voilla!

Oh, btw... how in gods name did your 1200 get an inbuilt flicker fixer... they NEVER came with one as standard. But like I said in my previous post, a scan doubler Flicker fixer would solve all your problems as you could just hook up any PC monitor and away you go :)

Thank you Ash. About the flicker fixer wasn't that the name for what the A500 didn't have? It's been so long since I actively worked with Amiga-hardware. Maybe it was just what was called a TV-modulator then? Or maybe it was the AGA graphics-chips that allowed high-res monitor resolutions without using the interlace function or whatever it was called, it was a function of the AGA chips I think and was different than other high-res screen-resolution methods. Edit: looking at the screengrab maybe it's the one called DblPAL?
Any idea where to get that doubler and what is actually looks like?

If you are very lucky, you may still be able to buy one from Power Computing (they STILL exist) http://www.powerc.com/cgi-bin/gp?pg=amiga.main&sid=&uid=ssSqiJprs5Yt9jI&rn=951&aid=&cid=1
or you could try Eyetech (yes STILL going too :)) http://www.eyetech.co.uk
yeah, you were thinking of a TV modulator (The big Brick thing you had to plug into the monitor port at the back of an A500.)
