As the title says. I'm wondering about some car-anime's, like éX-Driver and Initial-D but the DVD-store only seems to have US or Japanese versions so I guess no european release has been made. I'd prefer original sound with english subtitles but I'm not sure if the Japanese version has this and american translations of japanese anime is infamous for completely changing names, storys, sequences etc. and I don't want that.

I used to think a lower number region disc could be played on a higher region number player but what I just googled seems to imply that's incorrect. They also say there is region-protection so you can't play discs on region-free players anymore, but that gives people like me a problem when there is no release of the movies in my region doesn't it. FYI I don't know if my Asus DVD-ROM has any region or not but since it's a few years old it probably does and I haven't touched it.

Btw I do know this is a big topic jump but I wanted to talk about something else while I try and figure out the latest small issues out on my own, nothing major, and I'm using the time to relax and unwind and regain my strengths.

Greetings

Japan and Europe (except eastern europe) are region 2. I've heard of subcodes but don't know what's that all about. If it's region 2, it had better play in all of region 2 including the possible subregions. DVD's may also be multi-region or region 0, which means that it's playable on all regions. But as far as I know, Japan uses NTSC. But it may not matter if your TV/DVD can still display both..

Yes, for example, region 1 dvd is only playable with region 1 drives. There are region-free DVD players but the industry is apparently trying to get rid of those.. In wikipedia I just read about RCE (Region Code Enchancement) that prevents the DVD from playing in region free drives, but it depends on the particular DVD - some do, some don't. But lately some manufacturer have started making players that defeat even RCE by modifying the region code on the fly or bypassing the whole check. By default you can only change the region on a drive for about 5 times after which you'd have to have it reset by the manufacturer.
