I am having some very strange problems which is causing PC to lock-up and blue screen.. I'm on 98 se and first thought I had a virus ..did the Virus thing and all was clear. I traced my fault to a VDX error with Voltrack.... after seaching the MS wed site found this......

BUG: VOLTRACK Is Erroneously Unloaded After 255 Device Additions and Removals (Q249824)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows 95
Microsoft Windows 98
Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SYMPTOMS
VOLTRACK is unloaded and may cause Windows to display a blue screen after 255 device additions and removals.

CAUSE
VOLTRACK keeps a count of the number of devices it is attached to in an internal byte-size variable. This variable is incremented in response to a AEP_CONFIG_DCB command, but is not decremented. After 255 additions and removals, the byte overflows and VOLTRACK is unloaded in response to a AEP_BOOT_COMPLETE command from IOS. This can cause driver memory to be overwritten and can cause system instability.

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

That really sucks Mark. I haven't come across it before. Did they provide any suggestions to cure it?

Otherwise it sounds like a re-installation of Win 98. I use Mac's technique of removing the registry and doing a clean installation of Win 98. This leaves most things intact and saves a lot of re-installing games etc.

i hope you get it sorted out okay.

yeah ..no sugested fix..on the MS page.. I normally do a new install on a second hard drive and then use the old one as a slave and copy stuff accross...as I'm on Holidays I don't have access to all my tools and disks as they are at work...

I need a bandaid patch for the time being

l think u could only do a new install of Win98, but use the Technique dman was talking about....... but maybe if u use that it will not remove the problem anyway.
