View Full Version : How uneven are airport runways? (videolink)

While thrue dozens of pages and documents about real and virtual aviation I found this site http://www.a340.net/ and it has several videos including ones from the cockpit during take-off. During that video I noticed the plane vibrated heavily and the noise was very loud, much more loud and pertrusive than in FS9 for instance, using a similar/identical A340 made by Project Opensky. Now granted my only real flight experience is one trip of 60 minutes in a '74 Reims 177RG but that video seemed strange to me. Can someone clarify? I was going to pm Chris about it but I think he's busy so I'll ask here since I'm not really established as a poster in any flightsim forum.

Well runways do put up with some tough treatment. Putting up with 402 tonne 747-400ER's taking off, or other heavy planes landing, so it is inevitable they become a bit rough over time.

And I love that video of the 747-400 taking off. Those things sound great from inside, better than those dull sounding CFM56's on many A340's.

I was just surprised that something that heavy would shake so much, and especially in FS you just don't sense that, apart from in a FF joystick. I wonder if anyone has ever made a FF yoke for private use. Maybe one could use the guts of a FF joystick like the Logitech Force 3D and make it into a yoke, at least with the frame I designed for a yoke could probably give space for a FF motor setup.

Speaking of 747's, I heard about a yet-again-stretched 747 with 777 engines called 747 Advanced, do you know any news about that? It also had the winglets removed again.

Yeah, posted a pic of it in this forum. I doubt anything will happen with the 747 Advanced. The market is moving towards new planes, 787, A340-500, A340-600 models, A350 and the A380. All of them are ultra-long-range planes.

Oooh, dude do I feel ashamed now, well at least now I know where I saw it. Should've know it too since just about the only current events forums I visit with aviation is for sims so your posts is the only probably source.

Well in any case I just like the long 747 and one with 777 engines, and no winglets, sound interesting. Btw I tried the MelJet 747 Freighter last night, or rather this early morning, it looks nice (I took the RR variant, no idea what the difference is though) but I'd like to know how the heck someone could make that Kai Tak 747 landing since I tried to use all controls and it just wasn't able to manouvre anywhere near that speed or precision like shown on the video, and in fact I made it do a flat spin! That was however after a failed attempt at a loop but still, I wonder if it's not balanced proporly, or it's a glitch in the air-file because when going down it bobbed in a maner I just can't see an object even half the mass would be able to do. After I hit the water it accelerated rapidly up in speed (I have switched off collission detection) and even after I managed to stop it skipping on the water like a stone it kept on accelerating like it had a pack of JATOs and eventually I ended up on 730 knots with the bottom of the plane less than 40 meters over the water, and I did get a screen of that, I thought about grabbing a replay of the flat spin but I guessed you were too busy to watch it so I didn't.

Don't worry about it, forums are big things, easy to miss earlier posts, and we aren't like RSC where everyone will scream at you for not using the search. :)

And yeah, I'm kinda busy at the moment. :)

That's the thing, I didin't miss it, I forgot it was you that told me :D But I know RP isn't RSC, that's why I'm here now, but left RSC for good, although luckily some of the people I liked to talk to over there are here as well
But generally I think RSC is too big, when I was there I was a super moderator and well-liked, to my knowledge, but we were a lot of mods. supermods and admin's and the subforums were big and often large groups were seperated from the main forum and just stayed in the subforums.

I hope you'll have some time, and energy, later on, when that happends just post or email and I'll be there, I'm not going anywhere fast. In case you want the Honda Jet or F-111 sometime just ask for it and in the meantime try to keep your chin up so you wont drown in work :auswink: (ok honestly I'm not totally sure what this means but I mean it in a friendly semi-jokingly way to keept or get your mood up).
