A Qantas Airways Airbus A330-200 - flight QF70, carrying 178 passengers and 13 crew made an emergency landing in Kansai Airport, Osaka, Japan after departing from Tokyo's Narita airport on a flight headed for Perth.

The landing was due to a possible fire in a cargo compartment (smoke alarm activated). The aircraft made a safe landing and upon inspection, no sign of fire was found, although the control tower reported smoke on landing.

Nine passengers (6 Japanese, 2 Australians and 1 Chinese) were injured during evacuation of the aircraft and were sent to hospital. All have been released from hospital with the exception of a Japanese lady who sustained fractures during the emergency evacuation.

Qantas has accommodated the passengers in Osaka while a relief aircraft is flown from Tokyo. The problem aircraft will be inspected by officials from Japan's Ministry of Transport.

This incident caps off a horror spell for mainstream aviation, after a Helios Boeing 737 crashed after an apparent loss of cabin pressure, and a Airbus A340 from Air France crashed in Canada while landing in bad weather.
