Brad H 01-05-2005, 11:55 PM um the only way you could do it is if you were to use wine to get it into linux and i don't think it would work well if at all VQ 01-06-2005, 12:49 AM Yeah, erm, Racer is on linux and that's about it, because you ahev to port everything over and that's just too much work for old games like NFS and V8C, no matter how good. Y2kGoofball 01-06-2005, 02:37 AM why do you ask, or is it one of those quesitons you think up when your extremely bored like I do? zardos_demon 01-06-2005, 02:44 AM 50% bored, 50% interested. The Mac OS has pretty much always been used for graphic design and OS's like Unix and Linux are probably the best for coding (if you have enough brain power). I just wanted to know if anyone has ever tried mods on a different OS. VSV6 01-06-2005, 03:06 AM It's a pity that Mac, Unix and Linux suck to set up Not to mention are slow as hell to run (Linux isn't faster it's just not targeted for virus' as much as Windows) Windows is still the best OS out there, the holes only turn up because lamos can be bothered to exploit them The same would happen with any other OS if it was as mainstream as Windows is. Cheers -Mike VQ 01-06-2005, 05:38 AM Linux, they are contasntly fixing up actually, new patches for them all the time. chris 01-06-2005, 06:01 AM Mac is never a problem to setup. It always works as expected, and is easy to use right away. I've used Macs frequently (usually potent G4's or better). Windows and Mac are both good operating systems, but Mac is the preference for work use, as it has always been for years as the mainstay of the graphic designer/desktop publisher/multimedia people. A Mac also has the advantage in that it is much easier to burn those hybrid CD's using Toast, than on a PC for instance. Mac is also a good choice for programming/web-development, since it is Unix based these days. It is just hidden under the friendly Mac user interface so as not to frighten people. The old command line can be accessed though. Racer is on Linux, PC and Mac IIRC. Turboginge 01-06-2005, 05:25 PM What i dont get is with so many problems i keep hearing about OS other than windows is why does any one bother chris 01-06-2005, 07:36 PM People tend to go with the flow so to speak. Use a Mac for graphic design, or anything like that and you'll see why they are used so much for that purpose. They just work, without problems, and they are quite easy to use. I think Windows has been hit with its fair share of problems, I'm sure you've all connected to Windows Update and found yet another security patch. There have been so many, I've lost count, and 2 major large updates to note (SP1, SP2). Older windows versions have featured even more service packs. I remember Windows NT being patched to SP6 on my machine when I still used NT. However, NT, Windows XP, and Mac OS (8.5, 9.1, X) have all worked well for me. Win 98 was a horror story though. VSV6 01-06-2005, 09:23 PM ^_^ Win 98 sucked Your right about Macs though, I have 2 of them personally (G4 & G5) and they work well for things like graphic design (which both my mother and sister do). As a PC, they are way too expensive, a 40GB HDD costs almost 3 times as much as it would for a Windows desktop PC. Not to mention it has to be external Cheers -Mike VQ 01-06-2005, 11:45 PM Never has a p[oblem with 98SE, still use it on someone's comp in the house, ME ditto, still have it on my laptop, but I am gonna put XP pro on it's next format. Why do they need to be external hdd's? why don't you just buy one witha alrge internal, at school we got two emac's purley for video editing 80gb internal hdd's and 120gb external each, the externals good cos you swap between the Emacs. |
