I think a picture tells a thousand words, don't you?

But here's the story anyway

Runaway plane smashes fence

LOS ANGELES, USA: An American Airlines plane waiting for maintenance began rolling and smashed through an airport fence, coming to a stop with its nose blocking a side street, authorities said.

"It was parked overnight outside a hanger for maintenance. Somehow it moved. They don't know how," Los Angeles International Airport spokesman Harold Johnson said.

"No one was on it. It's under investigation."

Investigators are trying to determine if the American Airlines 767's parking brake was properly set.

Mr Johnson said he did not know who parked the jet or if the small blocks normally put next to the wheels to keep planes from moving had been used.

There were no injuries, and airport operations were not affected, he said. But some power lines were pulled down and a telephone line was cut.

"An investigation is under way as to how the aircraft managed to move on its own," American Airlines said from its Fort Worth, Texas, office.

Airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles said one of the plane's engines was scratched, so the Federal Aviation Administration will have to ensure it is flightworthy. That was the only apparent damage to the aircraft.

The plane ended up on World Way West, a little-used road along the western edge of the airport used primarily by airport employees.

The plane moved only about 60 feet, but that was enough to get the nose out 20 feet into the street, officials said.

Power was shut down at several nearby buildings and traffic lights so lines could be removed. The plane was then towed to the maintenance hanger.

Good god!!

That's bloody ridiculous!!

How can anyone forget to put the parking brake on in a plane like that, or at the very least, block the wheels up to stop it rolling...

Just think of the cost of one of those things &( (more money than I'll ever have access to, that's for sure.)

I saw this on the evening news, briefly, but didn't catch the whole story.

Being "in the business" I got an E-mail on this one yesterday right after it happened. Seems the mechanic failed to set the parking brake or chock the wheels. Those type of diligent employees are really appreciated by the spares sales administrators :HB:

I maintain a personal collection of such events. Most of them are "customer sensitive" because the airlines do not want to give the impression that they occasionally hire idiots. However, I might just have a look and add a web page to my site of some of the older "forgotten" events.

Ok, just one for now...

LOL! A good friend of mine is an aircraft maintenance technician, and he has told me about some real boobs and their Red Green style methods. Like two guys who were scheduled to do an inspection on a plane, but didn't have a manlift, so they used a rope and pully to let one guy raise the other up into the air and see the top of the plane. Apparently, their technique was not so ingenious as the guy missed a flaw in the skin. This flaw later caused the plane to become a convertible in mid flight. D'OH!

HAHAHA!!

That last pic of the 737 is a classic!!

But, on a more serious note though, these aircraft related stuff ups can have a very serious and dangerous affect.. Just remember what happened at Paris-Roissy airport.. The runway cleaning crew were at a SAFETY MEETING, while they should have been out sweeping the runway in preparation for the Air-France Concorde to take off..

The knew only too well that the Concorde's take off speed is 402km/hr, and at that speed even a small metal object would be enough to burst one of Concorde's tyres (they run them at very high pressure).

Well, at least they fixed the Concorde's 2 and only real problems, the tyres, and, the lack of shielding between the engines on each side of the plane.

Apparently, the airport here in Calgary made a runway ages ago that would support the landing of the Concorde. I guess it was a big event when it finally landed, and everyone went to see this, including my mom. From what I am told, the runway was too short and the plane nearly went off the end. To my knowledge, it has never landed here since then. &(
