They've announced the top 30 Aussie millionaires for 2001.
In the twelve months of 2001 alone:
AC/DC made 30 Million. Not bad for a 30 year old band. Name another with those stats. :HB: Go hard boys!!
They were second in the Aussie top 30 list for 2001 and surprisingly in 5th place with a cool 16 Mil was Steve Irwin (Croc hunter). Atleast 90% of that would be from the yanks so thanks guys. :D-^
He still drives a modest ute and lives in the three bedroom house his father built 29 years ago. He donated it all to various wild life charities.
This poses an interesting question.
If you became incredibly rich what would you blow it on?
To start the ball rolling.....
I would buy an oldish Holden (probably pre 80's) but if it were any newer it'll be a WB Statesman ('82) or latest model Commodore/Monaro. Which ever car I bought it would soon be a supercharged V8 with all the "go fast" goodies.
I'd also buy atleast 200 acres of Oz turf (enough real estate for my kids to start out and land is the one thing they aren't making any more of) and build my own house on it. ... or atleast design it myself and tour the globe to visit my NFS mates while it's being built. As a student I had serious plans to be an architect & I love drawing up house plans and often criticize plans in builder's junk mail or prize home junk mail etc. I also have a good, trustworthy, friend who is a retired builder. I'll put him in charge as an overseer/foreman (nothing physical).
heh, look out Californian "gals"
Better head for the hills Chey :) heh
So, if you folks become rich, what would you spent it on?

For those interested, I have finally, just found the list online after hearing it on the TV news a few hours ago and the radio a couple of days ago.
BTW, the "Herald Sun" is a Melbourne newspaper (2 newspapers merged). You can click the image to read it at their site but it's copied here to save you the walk :D

Croc hunter joins rich list
By KELLY RYAN

CELEBRITY crocodile hunter Steve Irwin has bitten into Australia's rich list.
His popularity overseas helped the TV presenter bank more than $16 million last year and claim equal fifth spot on a list of Australia's 50 richest entertainers.
Timeless rockers AC/DC claimed second spot with an extra $30 million in the bank.
The group's gross income helped push Gladiator Russell Crowe to third spot, on earnings of about $29 million in 2001.
Hollywood has been profitable for Aussie actors, according to BRW's Top 50 Entertainers List.
Nicole Kidman was eighth with a salary of more than $11 million.
Toni Collette is the 11th top earner on $7.9 million, while Cate Blanchett fell from 10th spot to 15th on about $6.7 million.
Hugh Jackman and Guy Pearce both feature in the list's top 20, each earning more than $5 million last year.
Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann returned to the list in fourth spot with $19.7 million.
Kylie Minogue soared on the list on the back of concert tours and record sales success.
Her salary leapt from $2.1 million in 2000 to $10 million last year.
The Wiggles stayed at No. 6 with earnings of $14 million. Kids also helped Hi Five into 14th position on almost $7 million. Bjorn Again was 10th with almost $9 million.
Topping the list again this year were the four owners of Sports and Entertainment Limited -- James Erskine, David Coe, Tony Cochrane and Basil Scaffidi -- with collective estimated earnings of $37 million for 2001.
The combined incomes of the top 50 stars is $329 million.
Entry to the list requires a minimum of $1.46 million.

Well, I think, if I won a million, I'd re-invest the lot, then re-invest the dividends for a while (a few years perhaps), then live of the dividends..
It is a basic budgeting principle to not live of ones capital, but, rather lives off the interest or return from the invested capital.
But, if I had to purchase something automotive, well, it would have to be one of those new Maybach 2002 Limousines! After seeing pictures of the interior I'm totally taken by the concept of a large, ultra luxurious passenger saloon, with DVD, CD players, computers built in, fully adjustable individual rear seats, with at least a metre of space in between the front and rear seats.. Those are just some of the Maybach's extravagant luxuries.. And naturally, someone else would drive it for me...
Unfortunately, the price is equally extravagant, leaving very little change from a million Australian dollars.. =((

I would buy the best 3d accelerator there is. The rest I would devote to hiring hitmen to kill all the old white rock groups that still exist. I might keep a few quid aside for some new games.

Good point Chris, the $37 million the top guy had, just putting it in a savings account at 3% simple interest (about what savings accounts are now in the US, which is pretty low) would generate over $1 million per year in interest. Stocks could do much better if you invest them right....
Anyway, after I finished investing the money, i'd probably buy a couple hundred acres in the Texas hill country, somewhere west of Austin, put in a nice house, (about 3000sqft / 275sq meters) a BIG shop for me to work on my airplanes and cars, and a small paved airstrip. All this would probably cost a bit over $500,000 US, depending on how big and fancy the house is.
Then i'd build two airplanes, either a Lancair Legacy or Lancair IV-P (carbon fiber, 300mph+ single engine planes) and a Stewart Mustang. (P-51 replica powered by a 502 Chevy, faster than the real P-51 :D) Both planes cost a bit over $125,000 to build, mainly depending on what engine and panel you put in.
And don't ask me what cars i'd buy, the list would be LONG. :D And if I had the time, and was a good enough driver, i'd race in SCCA World Challenge, probably in either a Corvette or Audi S4. Otherwise, i'd probably race in something easier and less time consuming, like Improved Touring.

What would I do with 30 million? To answer such a question could require a “Domagoj/Acca/Matt – sized post. I must limit myself. HMMM…
- I agree ACCA, Land is a high priority. Dialogue from the movie “Quigley down under” – “When do we get to the ranch?” (answer) “We’ve been traveling on it for three days”. That amount of land would be nice.
- I couldn’t just sit around being rich, I would have to spend my time doing something useful. I think that I would enjoy building computers that I could give away to those who could not afford to buy one.
- I would also be tempted to amass an extensive car collection, but I would need to be careful. Cars are a weakness for me (autoholic?) and I could envision myself broke except for a warehouse full of cars. I would have to Have to get at least these: 1970-73 Trans am (ram air 400), 1984 Ferrari GTO, 1969 Pontiac GTO, NSX, 2002 911 Turbo, …I could go on like this for days.
- I would take one of those week long training courses at the Road Atlanta race track, and maybe work toward a racing license.
- I and a friend are buying, refurbishing, and selling houses as a side business. We would like to try our hand at building houses.
That’s all for now – all of this daydreaming cant be very good for me.
Check out this site: www.deangardens.com if you would like to see how a local Atlantan has decided to spend his fortune. It is rather impressive.

I forgot to mention my transport choice. A tank. A big one with enough fuel to reach whitehall. Man that would be fun. I would crush Tony's bentley just for a giggle. A eurofighter would be my aircraft of choice. A fast one armed to the teeth. I would fly it to whitehall and kill some terrorists with it.
edit:
This is retorical?
I would also buy one share in thousands of companies just so I could go to the general meetings and cause a fuss. Maybe in my tank.

1985 holden VK Commodore (monster 383 holden stroker)
LJ Torana (VP - VR commodore V6)
Mack Prime mover
GT40 (a replica of the old one but with an EFi engine)
1998 VT commodore (holden V8 stock except exaust, cam, and chip)
i would get a house with a 6 car garage, 4 bedrooms, two bathrooms and a nice swimming pool.
and a monster computer

Hi, Accadacca, everyone!
This is a really tough question for me. Money... it's never really been a problem for me. Growing up my parents were fairly well off and we never wanted for anything. We had expensive "toys". Now, I don't work very hard at all and seem to be able to generate whatever money I need without too much effort. I've never really have even dreamed of having that much money. I know some very wealthy people, some as friends, others just acquaintances, and sometimes some of them are so far removed from reality it's frightening. I don't think the lifestyle is very fulfilling.
Now, having said that... What would I do with such a large amount of money?
Well, first of all, as several have said here, I would want to get some land. It wouldn't have to be too much, just enough to be totally isolated from any "neighbor". I would like to, with the help of a professional, design my own house for this land. I would like it to be innovative, unusual - without being bizarre. Not too large either, I wouldn't want a place that I'd have to have a "staff" to take care of. It would need to be sizeable enough, however, if I were to ever settle down and get married, maybe have some kids that there would be enough room for that, or at least enough room to expand for that. Also I would like a spare room or two for guests. The land would need to have some varied terrain, hills, valleys, forest, meadow. I would like it to not be too far from a significant metropolitan area, for shopping and entertainment, but far enough away to be rather isolated. And room for some animals, horses, maybe enough room to ride motorcycles. I live in California, a bit east of San Francisco, and I know just such a place that would suit fine. I've got a boyfriend whose parents live near a small seaside town called Pescadero. It's kind of a small, lonely place, where the cool wind comes off the ocean and caresses the land, carrying it's perfume of sweet salty air. Sunsets there can be like nothing else in the world. If you want to hit one of the world's greatest commercial areas, just cross the Pacific Coast Range and you hit "Silicon Valley". Shopping, clubs and commerce abound. Just north on the Pacific Coast Highway is a beautiful town called Half Moon Bay, and further north lies the mythical city of San Francisco. This place would be for me when I felt introspective and wanted to be somewhat alone or away from the "busy" world.
For when I felt lively and outgoing, I would love a place in "town", either like the "Marina" district in San Francisco (one of those small but very vertical homes that are all "scenic window" that faces the beautiful San Francisco Marina), or maybe somewhere in the "South Bay Area" (Silicon Valley). Those two places would largely take care of my "living" needs (sue me, I like variety! &( ).
Next, for transportation, I would like a nice modern sports car. Probably for practicality reasons I would also need to own some sort of utility vehicle, like a pick-up, van or SUV (though I have NEVER been a fan of SUVs, I do recognize their usefulness - I've just never been a very practical girl). I'm not sure what kind of car, maybe a Ferrari 360 Modena, or Porsche Twin Turbo, maybe a BMW M3. I would also like some sort of dedicated "racer" for club races (being near some of the worlds greatest race tracks, Laguna Seca [Sorry, refuse to call it "Mazda Raceway At Laguna Seca - uh, you didn't hear me say that, shhhhh!], Sears Point Raceway and Thunderhill Park). It wouldn't need to be a fast car, or an expensive car. For me, racing is never about the speed, it's about the competition and the pursuit of excellence - that can be found in an 1960s MG or a F1 car. The formula is not necessarily relevant.
I would like some other things, fast computers, media center, a nice personal gym with modern equipment, an absurdly fast internet connection!
Next, I would like to do some "good", non-selfish things with the money. I'd like to maybe start a scholorship fund or contingency fund for women racers. I would like to see many more women participate in motorsports. Maybe, help field a Le Mans team with women drivers for the 24 hours event (hmm, maybe I could be the first woman to win Le Mans! ), or, maybe the American Le Mans Series. Perhaps start a scholorship fund for car designers to attempt to help steer the field of automotive design a bit away from where it's headed (espeically here in America, I think cars are generally getting very ugly, losing their grace and beauty).
One of the things I really like about "western" (hemisphere) culture is the incredible creativity that has happened in this century. I know we are "market driven" and often things get exposed to the public for a very short time and then are intentionally discarded to make way for the latest and greatest. I think that's a terrible shame. I love old movies, old music - not saying I don't like new movies and new music, but they are being "advocated" now, marketed currently, they don't need my help. I think I would like to start or help fund a company or group that seeks out the gems that had been present in the past and are maybe swept away and forgotten. I'd like to be able to secure the rights to such works (music, television, movies, books, magazines, etc) and restore them, make them freely available to the world at large perhaps through the internet. I would love and be honored to be involved some way in the preservation of old and dear things that the modern marketing machine considers no longer viable.
After doing all of that I would like to do a great deal of travelling, see the major sights of the world, but also see the small forgotten places that tourists never go. Maybe stay for an extended while with the worlds various cultures to learn more about them, to feel and experience them. Maybe go visit Acca!
Better head for the hills Chey hehHehe, if you read my post, I would "head for the hills" of the Pacific Coast Range. You would certainly be invited to come by!
I'm sure there is so much more I would like to do with that kind of money, but the preceeding would be the main things that catch my mind just now, at this point in my life. It's a very interesting question, Accadacca, I thank you for posing it.

Great ideas Cheyenne !
One of my main interests as always been music. I have played in more bands than I can remember. I would like to start a center for live music performance and recording to encourage and support developing musicians. Occasional performances by established bands would be cool too.
The rest of my interests are far too decadent to get into. :)
Now that I think about it, a much more difficult question to answer is "who doesn't want to be a millionaire ?" I haven't met very many people who would say yes to that.

Hi, Accadacca!
Would I find you anywhere near Jed Clampit's manson?Actually, Pescadero, California is a bit north of the Clampett's place!
Where I live currently is Stockton, California, which is also north of the Clampett's abode.
Where you would find the Clampetts would Beverly Hills, California.
I would consider the Hollywood Hills or the "Canyon(s)" as a residence for my "social" side. I do love it there. Now, if i can just stop getting into traffic accidents there, I could make it work!
So, as you can see, I'm a few steps north of the Clampetts! Still, I have to chase Elly May Clampett's varmints out of the yard constantly! But it does have it's good side too: Jethro Bodine is always there to do the heavy lifting and Granny is always willing to share her Rheumatiz med'cine!
Albuquerque, New Mexico, would be sort of just left of the southern center of the United States.
So, in answer to that age old question:
Would that be a left at Albuquerque? If you were coming from the South (Australia!), yes, a definite left would put you right at my doorstep, either with with my "million$" or currently! ^_^

Hmmm, also in the realm of "personal stuff"...
Maybe climb Everest - yes, yes. I know that is so "been there, done that", but I think it would still be an "experience".
And also I have to agree with IH8COPS, a kit plane would be incredible, from assembly to flight hours, the Lancair IV-P (http://www.lancair.com/) (the "P" is the pressurized cabin version, yes?) or the Viperjet (http://www.viperjet.com/), or if anyone ever fully solves the "tail-shearing" problem of the BD-10 (http://www.bedeaerosport.com/pages/more.html), wow, that would be incredible. Of course, I'd want to get my pilots license somewhere along the way &( , and of course, use my newfound wealth to help promote the EAA's Young Eagle Flight Program (http://www.eaa.org/youngeagles/). Then, when I've got myself and the aircraft flightworthy, I'd simply have to put in an appearance at the Oshkosh Flyin (http://www.airventure.org) and drop by the Women In Aviation International (http://www.wiai.org/) booth!
Hmm, I could get to like this "wealth" thing. Now, Acca, how do I go about collecting this $30 million you promised me? &(
Look what you've done to me! I was perfectly happy being moderately "well-off", now, now! I must have massive wealth! Noooo! :help:

Yeah, the P is the pressurized version. You ever been to Osh? I went in '99, it was a blast. Eight days of seeing everything from WW1 era replicas to the latest, greatest, fastest planes around. :D
I went to a forum hosted by the guy who designed the Stewart 51, really, really, impressive. He obviously wasn't some polished marketing guy, he told everything straight. He talked about the nasty spin caracteristics that real Mustangs and his replica have, and that he highly recommended that anyone building one of his Mustangs get spin training in a real Mustang. He obviously was more concerned about people knowing what they were getting into in building a P-51 replica than in selling a plane. -^

Hi, IH8COPS
I never have been to Oshkosh for the flyin (or for any other reason for that matter). But it's on my list of "must-do's". Personally, I think it would be a great adventure to build and then fly to Oshkosh. I think that would be right up there with some of life's great experiences.
It sounds like the designer of the Stewart 51 is an "enthusiast". I'd much rather deal with someone like that than a marketing guy any day! The world needs a lot more like him, I think.
Ooh, do you have an active linke for the Stewart 51? I went searching and it seems their domain is "dead". I get thrown to a "netster" page that then gives me a pop-up window proclaiming "No pop-ups with Netster!". ARGH.

I would settle for humble lifestyle choices - a small shack near the beach (good fishing spot) and I'd do up an old Holden 253 and putt around in that. I'd invest the money so I could make annual donations the Royal Children's Hospital - or maybe I'd just give them the money to investand use themselves.
I have absolutely no interest in big houses or big cars as I am a very simple person with basic needs.

Of course you would, it's what people who buy replicas want. As close to the real thing as possible without the original item's price tag.

What would I do if I had a boat-load of money? Obviously, like just about everyone here, I'd have a HUGE collection of cars. HUGE. :) I'd also have a big shop to work on them all, and I'd do that in all my spare time. I'm sure I'd be a preferred customer at Summit Racing and Jegs :D
All of this would likely be in Canada. I wouldn't want/need a big house, just a 3 or 4 bedroom place. As long as it's got a big basement for all my parties I'll be throwing (every one of you is invited! ).
I'd also have a big room with a load of computers and a super-fast internet connection coming into that room. The Racerplanet servers would be located there free of charge :D
I'd make sure my family and some of my closest friends, that have been there for me through the tough times, would never have any financial trouble in their lives.
I'm positive I'll start some kind of business... or two. I'd have to have something to keep me busy during the day (other than testing the load of cars I'll have). I'll take stock in Goodyear too, since I'm sure I'll be buying lots from them ;)
Oh, and I'd fly every single one of you guys to Europe or some other exotic place and we could have a big huge NFS party 8)~ :HB:

- Mahaahaha - that's hilarious :)
PS - Maahahaha Vince Klortho LOL love the pic ^_^
I'll give you all a quick lesson in wealth though...
1 million dollars is like the weight of tissue paper - it is nothing - it is just enough to buy maybe one awesome arifact/car, etc., or else really live "very normal" but very comfortable from that standopoint of "regularity".
5 million is the same, only you can have an alright house plus a car or two, and some investments, and still have probably half the cash left, but that's what you'd want to keep if you want to be safe about it. That would be IT, the rest just keeping cash on standby for emergencies/one-time opportunities.
10 million is pretty petty too, but this amount of cash has the potential for some big dough (investment potential), although that's basically all luck, and if you blow it that'll suck - but greed will get you thinking about your first million anyways, so if something goes wrong, it's your own greed at fault ^_^
20 million is about all I could think of as a pretty "spare level of being very much completely self-sufficient", if you know what I mean. You're still tied to having to think about your cash in any situation, and can afford basically any old toys you'd like, with great house, tons of extra cash, investments, etc., but this is still requiring budgeting, so this is really "the richest you can be, yet live like a normal person within a mid-sized mansion".
50 million is a little more relaxed than 20, but that remainder will likely dip into some elaborate long-term investments, and constant "playing of the market", etc, since that can be afforded with 10-20 millon dollar variance in total capital being admissible.
100 million is basically the first comfortable amount of money, within the "top ranks of lifestyle". This is the point where you can start being bored of life from having so much cash, but hey we're just getting started! :p It's also the point at which only PURE greed would lead someone to contemplate the amassment of even more fortune...
250 million is good to basically start any kind of business you want, with the works for lifestyle. The usual culprit for this type of lifestyle might consume lots of cocaine, have political ties/organized crime ties, spend tons at fancy restraurants and frequent the curcuit of socialite jabber, have power to manipulate decisions based on sizable profits, and perhaps even have some ties to royalty and other such conglomerates (corporate heads, etc). This is where you take the possibilitites of "golfing with the boss" to the ultimate ehights. Anything - Enron-style crap can begin to formulate at this level. It's make it or break it as far as forged steadfast indulgement of capital proliferation, and also the edge of the cliff is the other option, where boredom and neutrality beckon precariously...
Half a bil - is a good laugh. Go on your binges, do this, that, the other. You're basically in the clear. No laws apply to you. Nothing could really capsize your forays, except maybe backstabbers/corporate sharks, so it pays to be set in the political convergence front.
1 bil. Done. Jabba the Hutt time. There is absolutely nothing you can't do, so there's no reason to do anything. Sheer boredom with life. Any excuse to alter current establishment is the game of choice. Anything at all that is even remotely eye-catching (keeps you from dying of boredom) will be indulged in full. Watch out for these...no telling what stuff goes on that's traceable to the contestants in this lush playpen. Past this, it's all about which pigs in the pen soil themselves to the max...
Okay, back to the first point... As far as something "realistic", I'd personally go for a CLK-GTR, F1 GTR, F1 LM, F1 "regular", GT1, Bugatti Veyron, EB110, Dauer 962 LeMans, Moby Dick, 917/30, 959, F40, F50, 908, 512TR, 512M, Dyno, and maybe a 930 Slantnose (700-1000hp) or maybe 5 of them with varying hp :), and lastly why not a deep black 1987 Lamborghini Countach, with full Bertone tuning - racing engine/transmission/suspension/shocks/exhaust/seats, everything - 700+hp, 600+tq, 0-60 in 1.9s - for real - eats superbikes 0-150mph - I only saw an ad for in in the Dupont Registry about 4-5 years ago...the sickest thing I ever saw...
