Guys,

Just got 5 for the PC..Is there a 917 Gulf ala the playstation version?....if not, has anyone made one?

Also, how do I add the extra cars and can extra tracks be added as well?

Could you aim me at a few good sites?

Thanks..

We're still waiting for the NFS PC File format to be completely decoded..

And, I wish we had a Gulf-Porsche 917 Kurzheck in NFS5, just like the no. 20 Gulf 917 Kurzheck in the famous Le Mans movie.

My college roommate's father was an avid racer (934, 935, RSR) and collector and he had a 917 that was formerly in Mark Donahue's stable. It still had the Sunoco paint job. That was one very cool car ! Unfortunately, I never heard it running. I heard the 935 though (with twin turbos) and it was incredible. I had to cover my ears. The RSR (non-turbo) was pretty amazing too.

Anyway, I too hope the cracking proceeds well.

Is there any truth to the claims that a plug-in was made but EA insisted it be supressed ? I tend to doubt it but do you know ?

Vince Klortho: Your friend's father had a 917/30?? Holy heavens! What a lucky person. Those things are so RARE!! I'll give you an idea of how special the 917/30 is:

Engine: 5.4 litre Flat-12, Twin-turbocharged
Power: 1130kW / 1536hp
Torque: 1735Nm
Top Speed: 250mph+

I've heard a 917/30, and they are awesome. They make such an incredible roar. They don't rev as much as the normal non-turbo 917's did (only about 7000 revs I think, where the normal 917's did 8400rpm). The 917/30 ran in the Can-Am championship in the early 70's, where it was unbeatable. Not even all the combined might of the big banger (8.4 litres and above) small-block Chev V8's in the other cars could beat the 917/30.

The 917/30 is (I think) the most powerful circuit race car ever built.

I've never heard a 935 for myself, but, I have heard recordings of the 935/77 and it sounded pretty wild. I have however heard the no. 25 Porsche 917 Langheck (The white one, run by an Austrian team, Salzburg I think they called themselves). That car sounded really cool, (and very very loud).

Holy sheep shyte !

I knew it was powerful but 1500 HP ? I didn't know that. Those guys aren't the bragging type I guess.

It is really interesting how different cars can sound. The 935 was really amazing as I said, as was the RSR, but I have heard dozens of 911s that just did not impress me. There are a bunch of guys where I live that are into the Porsche club racing scene and none of their cars come even close to being impressive.

On the other hand, I was at a massive car show (>2000 cars) in Pleasanton, California recently and there were some cars there that sounded absolutely amazing. Many were just "plain old" American muscle cars but there were some very nice ones, some with enormous, blown engines. The interesting aspect to the sound that many of these cars had was the low frequency component. Most cars really don't have that. The 935 had the serious turbo whine but significant low frequencies also.

Anyway, thanks for the info. I hope we can see a 917 in the game some day or, possibly, one of its successors. The game's that is.

I will tell you one thing - I will not be buying any more racing games until there are lots of the cars I like or they are editable. By this criteria I would not have bought NFS3, 4, or 5 when they came out and if they do the same crap with NFS6 I won't buy it either. The game I play the most now (F1 2001) I play with an entire field of 22 user-made GT cars. Oddly enough, it's from EA. Who would have thought ? FWIW, the cars I like are the LeMans and ALMS types.

I just wish they bring WSC out, and soon.. I'm still waiting for it..

But speaking of car sounds, the only cars I've heard that sound really special are the following:

1. Maserati Spider GT/Cambiocorsa (lovely traditional roaring V8 sound)
2. Porsche 917 (unbelievable noise - hearing protection recommended)
3. Ferrari F355 Berlinetta (just superb to listen to)
4. Porsche 911 GT3 (the flat-6 sounds awesome when they tune it up to this sort of level)
5. Ferrari F50 (so sensational sounding, words can not describe that sound, it's like nothing else.)

Hi, Vince, (met up with the "Gatekeeper" yet?)

I'm not sure, I'm not a Porsche fanatic or anything, but I do have an interest and know lots of racers... isn't the RSR (934?) a single turbo, not a "non-turbo"?

That is a very good question. I did some searching and one of the best web pages I found was this one (http://www.johnstarkeycars.com/Images/Feature_Car/PorscheCarrera911/Carrera911.html). Apparently my impressions were incorrect. The RSR appears to have been a non-turbo car but it was a bit earlier than my recollections. What I recall was that around 1982 or so the SCCA rules went through major changes and turbocharged cars became seriously disadvantaged. At that point, my friend's dad switched to a non-turbo car that they called an RSR. I don't know for sure if this is entirely accurate though.

I know that a lot of 911 owners converted ordinary 911s to something approximating the RSR spec, as it wasn't terribly expensive nor difficult to accomplish.

Thank you very much for the link, quite educational and interesting. I know that today looking at older Porsches (espeically ones that were raced) today can sometimes be an adventure, and researching the chassis plate can be your only indication of what the car was originally as owners frequently "evolved" their cars to fit changing race regulations.

I don't think all RSR's were Turbos.. Their was a 2.8 litre one I think, which wasn't turbocharged.. It was based on the 1973 Carrera RS.. I could be wrong however..
