Been meaning to bring this up for a while, but in a couple of posts on the forums at NFS Unlimited, NFS U2 Sound designer Charles Deenen (under the nickname 'chuck d2') has been explaining a little on how they crated the in-game sounds, which I believe is one of the game's strongest points. :hphones:

Here's (http://forum.nfsunlimited.net/viewtopic.php?p=53742&highlight=#53742) one of those threads, also, this (http://forum.nfsunlimited.net/viewtopic.php?p=60734&highlight=#60734) one.

forget NFSU1's car sounds. The technology behind it is 100% different this time around in NFSU2. In NFSU1, the sounds where looped samples, just like 99% of all other games out there. NFSU2 has EA-only technology.

your questions on V8's. You'll love the way it sounds. One of the V8's we recorded was a dragster mustang. Nice and powerful stuff. It's up to you to find out for which car and upgrade it's used You'll hear V8 idles, rev limits, accels, decels, off/on throttle, exhaust sputters etc. etc. All the details you'd want in car engines, they're all there in NFSU2. There are in total around 1000 recorded sounds for the car engines in the game.
The AE86 is one of our favorites as well. You'll like how it progresses in the game. One of the recordings is from an old AE86 which was owned by a young teenager. It was quite beat up, but sounded wicked. You'll hear the tail-pipe rattle problem in the game :)

Of course they've been taking some liberties with the sounds as many of them don't sound that spectacular all by themself, or, as he describes, are difficult to record.

btw, there's another fun thing in the game. if you turn all the music off (in FE and in-game) you get a whole other replacement. Listen for the dudes fighting about a car in the back-room in one of the shops for example. You'll get the idea. You'll also be able to hear cars racing in the distance much more clearly.
Noticed this in the demo too (don't have the full game yet) ambient sounds, a nice touch.

Oh, those who don't have the game yet, the Avi clips in http://forum.nfsunlimited.net/viewtopic.php?p=56047 give a pretty good idea. :)

there might be over 1000 engine sounds in the game, but strange thing is that the Skyline and the RX-8 fully modded sound exactly the same way, even though the engines are so radically different. the sound is perfect for the RX-8, but the Skyline has a much deeper, nicer sound i think...

I have all the "music" turned off, and I have indeed noticed the ambient sounds; VERY cool! The sound of the GTO and Mustang are absolutely awesome. The GTO engine sound was the first thing I went gagga over when I first tried the game. Waaaayyyy cool! The other cars sound really good for fart cans, but I like grumble baby ! )=)

So far my favorite sound is from the Escalade (SUV).

I noticed the ambient car racing sounds as well.

nighttraveler is also right in that a Nissan GT-R sounds a lot different to a twin-rotary 1.3L Mazda RX-8. The RX-8 has that unmistakable, and very different rotary sound, while the Nissan GT-R is like a BMW inline-6 for sound.

But in a real RX-8, so much of the sound you hear is just road and tyre noise, and wind-noise, because the engine to be honest isn't very loud at all. From the outside as well they tend to be quite hushed. The old twin-sequential turbocharged RX-7 was like that as well in standard form.

Nothing like a Nissan 350Z with its raucous V6 engine.

But the sounds of any racing game are among the hardest things to get right, although it easier if you can record samples directly from the real car.
