Only guessing here, but maybe you won't unlock any new races unless your reputation goes up? In the first NFSU you weren't able to progress at some points in the career mode unless you got the necessary Reputation points (stars in NFS U1) and to get that, you would have to put visual mods on your cars; more kit and graphics on your car means more 'rep'.
From what I've read in other forums, I think it's the same in UG2...

in order to access locked areas you have to hit contracts with sponsors, once you've completed each contract, you will have a new unlocked area. check your career status (T by default), there you can see your actual progress of the game, and current level, sponsor, etc...

thanks but i can't even get past the first stage...i'm still stuck driving around and around in circles not finding anything useful....i've found a few of the shops and money etc...i've done a couple of outrun's, drift, racerx or something like that. the only one i can't win is the drag, i blow my engine every time...so i'm kinda lost now...so please tell me how to hit these contract's or even improve my rating's etc etc
thanks....i'm driving a nissan240sx

You blow up the engine if you rev it too high. ;)
Except that is unrealistic, since the rev-limiter should kick in regardless. Maybe EA wanted to include something to make the dreary drag-racing mode a little more difficult.
It's my least favourite part of this game, and honestly, I think UG2 would have been better off without the drag-racing mode. Even worse is the stupid artificial help to keep you in one lane.
That's the only bad bit in this thing, otherwise it is surpassed my expectations.

it got better this time round though, you can move your car a fair bit!
theres no way they would have a game abour ricers and not have street drag racing, thats what its all about (ricers I mean ... dragging you at the next set of lights)

It's rubbish how the thing decides it should steer into traffic on its own.
It sort of tries to control how you turn, and as a result makes it also easier to lose control. It wasn't good last time, but now it's worse. It would be better if none of that ridiculous crap with the game trying to control where you go existed. I'm perfectly capable of steering a car myself.
That mode is really, really annoying. I wonder who were the beta testers who gave positive feedback on such a feature?

Since the drag races aren't about steering, and solely about shifting and realizing your shift points, I think it is a good feature and lets you concentrate on the important stuff. It should be made optional though (turned on or off), that would be the ticket for sure.
