dad bought a new ute today without telling me at all.

its a 1986 landcruiser 75 series with a holden 308 from a VL commodore on gas. it also has a 4 post bullbar with sidebars, pioneer cd player and kenwood 6x9's.

i took her for a drive just before and she is a bloody beast, quickest thing i've ever driven. its almost lethal the way the leafsprings and harsh steering bounce you around while the 308 is pushing the thing as hard as it can go. i've been doing some pretty massive burnouts in it too, second gear seems to be absolutely perfect for tyre frying, its quite tall, with third taller again. I'm led to believe its still got the old landcruiser cogbox but it seems alot quicker than our old ute changing wise.

and dad only paid 9 grand for it!, i'll try to get some pics tonight, maybe tommorow.

looks like its in good condition too, unless someones sprayed it recently?

A 308 ay, hmm, that'd kick ass in that ^_^

it does more than kick ass, it forces you to change your underwear. you take her for a burn, do some crazy stuff like get airborne at 80kmh and you drive it back to the garage and just go "what the hell just happened"
i'm also led to believe that that paint is original apart from a few touch-ups here and there, still very good for its age.

Hmm, the VL 308 wasn't known to be that powerful for various reasons, but can be modifed to be powerful of course, they haven't changed how they look in agess have they? it looks like the current 79 series still.

But if you find that scary, i don't think you'd like to drive a HQ ute with a 500 under the bonnet.....

its only scary off-road, and i wouldnt really say scary, it's more unpredictable. its not scary on the roads, just bucketloads of fun.

the VL 308 has plenty of power, its just a bit funky with the throttle sometimes making it more unpredictable.

I'm just saying, from factory figures, how they were relesed, the VN motor is A LOT better basically.

but wasnt the VN fuel injected?

basically a new motor, new heads, different crank i think, well at least compared to the carbied 120kw VL V8, it was basically new, but compared to the Walkinshaw V8, it wasn't too different. Answer's yes, it is fuel injected.

did you watch the Russell Coight Celebrity challenge last night?

"Wanna see me do doughnuts in the 4 wheel drive?"
"yeah"
"see the problem is in the outback youve gotta create your own fun ... give me a V8 and a patch of dirt anyday"

Of course he then goes on to run straight through the community health center but still I was thinking of you Monaro when he did it ^_^

That little truck looks to be a whole lotta fun. All you need now is a snorlel & winch and ya sorted..

Just don't take the doors off :) (http://users.verdeonline.com/ace/jeep/rolling.wmv)

y2k: yeah i saw that, i thought of me too as we had a 100 series landcruiser almost exactly the same as those and they are full time 4wd, impossible to do burnouts properly.

dcsplash: man i hope that doesnt happen, i actually was doing some doughnuts in it (russell coight style) and the rear was bouncing like all hell over the ruts in the paddock and i got it over on two wheels. would have been good if i had of rolled it without the insurance papers having gone through yet.

She looks pretty good.

That thing should handle doing doughnuts easily, you should give it a real challenge, like what my grandpa did with his Landcrusier.

He had an old palm tree in his front yard, and we were prunning it and one of the dead branches wouldnt come of it so we tied a rope to the branch and the other end to the Landcruiser and we pretty much snapped the tree in half, now thats fun trying to move object that arent meant to be moved with a V8 Landcrusier

I like it. Looks rugged and c'ute! What kind of weight can it carry?

I remember those old Landcruisers. I most remember the one with the 4.5 litre 24 valve inline-6. It looks the same as your one, but has the Landcruiser 4.5 badge on the front. It had plentiful reserves of power and strong acceleration. :) Merging into motorway traffic was something done with ease.

Then you'd see those turbo-diesel 4.2 litre ones (the 5 door wagon version, like the GXL/Sahara model) hit a long hill at 95-100km/hr, and they'd be struggling, pouring coulds of black smoke out the exhaust, but the normal inline-6 would have none of those troubles.

mickcals: our old utes bullbar was bent in so many places because of me and my love of mowing down dead almond trees. you'd just motor through in spring and those without buds flowering... vroom!

chey: over a metric tonne, more if you dont want to go anywhere far. when we were pouring concrete slabs to build all our horse yards the old ute could only just take one slab which we worked out to be about 1.3 tonne.

DJC: by the older ones do you mean the 45 series? they were the workhorse to end all workhorses. dads best mate still has a petrol one in working order built in the 50's.

chris: our 80 series (i think i've told you this before) had the 4.5 inline 6 and as you rightly say they really did go pretty quick. they also head a very good exhaust note for a six and the weight of teh car never put the engine off great acceleration bursts.

But a V8 holden motor is always better, and a turbo diesel with low lag and lots of technology is even better!
