Okay, people, you know the deal, you try to hack into my computer, I report you to the Police. Simple as that. In my book, hackers as just as bad as Al-Qaeda terrorists, and should be treated as such!

Someone from LA? Give me his address and I'll "take care of him" ;)

Hope you can get these twirps straightened around!

The thing is, it is possible that whoever you think is responsible truely IS NOT responsible. They might just be some dough-head with no firewall who was unfortunate enough to have a hacker piggy back off them. I get about 10 hits every day, and I would bet my left nacker that 99% of them are just random scans.

This server gets around 10 hits a minute, either scans or whatnot.

I wish they'd find something more constructive to do..

I kinda picture a bunch of dweebs sitting around letting the scanner run, and then jumping for joy when they succeed in a hit! They are probably folks who have never seen the light of day yet are tanned golden brown from their monitors radiation, and feel that dog food is an acceptable lunch, lol.

Send that info to your isp whenever it happens, they notify the hackers isp, and if they get too many (dunno how many) complaints they will discontinue his/her service, so that the hacker will at least have to find a new provider.

I agree with Commander. I get them all the time. I used to be paranoid until I remembered MI5 would be hard pushed to find two brain cells to rub together and the nerdy hackers were just wasting their time with me. I know people have all kinds of stuff like bank account details and telephone numbers but 99.9% of it would be useless to a third party. Scan your system daily with a trojan scanner and a virus scan and I doubt you will ever find a problem. I have never had a virus or trojan and I have been online since 1994. Keep your guard up but don't think every ping or scan is malicious because normally they are harmless.

On the other hand they may be after you...:look:

If the IPs are in the dial-up range, the only people who can track them, are the ISP, and that's if they are willing to put the time and effort towards doing it (imagine the amount of abuse-related mail they must recieve per day).

I used to be responsible for my old work places' primary and secondary security precautions on our main office, our servers in Iceland (the country, if there was a doubt) and our main ISP...

You get random scans ALL the time, we were running IIS on our web servers, and were getting scans all over the shop for the common exploits known in IIS, where you can run system commands through the browser (easily fixed with MS's latest patches). There used to be the well known phf loophole in Apache too, but that was old...

I'm pretty well versed in computer security, and I don't like people calling the idiots that infect computers, Hackers. A hacker is not like that... what you're most likely suffering from is a kid who's just downloaded the latest "t00lz" from google or somewhere, and just running scans over a subnet, or a class B or C network or something...

These people are regarded as "script kiddies" - because they have no real knowledge or intelligence, they just use other peoples' software to run scans and run SubSeven attacks on peoples' machines.

Take them to the police - these are the people giving computer hackers a bad name - hackers are the people who founded the Internet as we know it, the people at MIT, etc. Hackers are very true, and follow a good moral ethic, they do not cause damage, that is not their purpose, they are there to help fix exploits, and problems - most of them are actually employed by big companies to help out with their security...

The dickheads that you're dealing with, are simply losers...

Anyone with an ounce of sense could download these scanners and run a scan across the range of IPs... So don't give them any credit :) Go get the buggers...

There is legilslation that I saw in the UK before I left, saying that ISPs may soon be required to keep upto 7 years worth of traffic logs, which means they could be policing routers and gateways soon... unless they're trialling now - having worked within an ISP and also in a .com company - it's certainly a different view.

As Rob (Spiderman) said, if you take the necessary precautions, you will not suffer any damage, or undue problems... Firewalls like ZoneAlarm warn against the slightest things like ping (ICMP) attacks, which can lead to a DoS attack, or more... If you think it is related to this board where the people are attacking from, don't shout about it, the "kiddie" that is carrying out these attacks most likely thrive on this sort of "attention" in seeing you get frustrated... treat them like a mis-informed child...

The likelyhood is that they are scanning away at their hearts' content just to get kicks - I wouldn't take it as a personal attack... You can usually tell if it is a personal attack... And if there is a true hacker out there that wants in your machine, he/she will find a way, but I doubt they'd be interested in a personal machine, it's usually more corporate machines that people go after... Personal machines have no information, or nothing interesting or challenging to offer for the true hacker (who's ethic states that he/she is looking to expand his/her knowledge...)

I'm not in ANY way defending these script-kiddies bastards, but I will defend hackers (in the true sense of the word - look up the Hacker Ethic on the web).

My ports are constantly being scanned as well. It seems that it is a never-ending practice.

One guy who was trying to hack me seriously - about 30 hits a day on my Zone Log - stopped after I e-mailed his ISP and made a formal complaint.

WC_Outlaw: Yes, I probably should have been more specific.. Most of them are script kiddies these days.. But it's all the more worrying that their are so many of these kiddies banging at the firewall, then, then you miss the one genious hacker who has the brilliant script that lets him in..

I find it an absolute annoyance, since it interrupts my work..

I probably shouldn't worry so much since all of my software (OS, Application servers, Firewalls, etc) are up to date with the latest patches anyhow..

But these all these attempted attacks drive me mad.. (And I've got a short temper at the best of times..)

Besides the annoyance from interuptions you mentioned Chris, I would also be peeved that some person(s) were attempting to steal from me. Something I don't tolerate.

If I hear the slightest of noises outside the house at night I pace the property with a baseball bat (sometimes two). God help 'em if I ever find some wouldbe theif.
For obvious reasons that can't be done on a PC but I would feel that my property was just as threatened.

Too bad we can't track 'em down like the good ol' CB days. :D (meaning C.B. radio)

I hope you realize that according to AD&D rules, you will suffer a penalty for a two handed attack without being specialized as able to do so! :D Or... are you a Ranger who's choce of weapon happens to be a baseball bat?

Argh, just tuggin' at leaves here, all in fun, ^_^

Oh, I prefer twin hockey sticks... GO FLAMES GO!!!!!!!!!!!

Geez TJ still going by the AD&D rules are you? time you got around to the 3rd edition D&D man :D .

Ow and btw Acca whatever happened to your boomerang, your an aussie ain't ya? :D :D .

Ythrow it out the window and take the head off of the guy trying to get in from the other side....and catch the boomerang when it gets back (anybody seen mad max ^_^ )

Acca: God help those script kiddies if we ever get hold of them. ^_^

They'll be begging for mercy..

But, speaking of C.B radio though, it seems that not so many people use them anymore, excepting interstate truck drivers.

I actually have a small one fitted on my motorbike (a 900cc Honda Fireblade), since, well, when you go on long distances, well, then sign says 110km/hr, but, the actual speeds are more like 180-240km/hr.. The interstate truck drivers usually keep a look out for Police, and, mention it over the CB radio, that's how I know to slow down for a while.. Useful devices, those CB radios!

AD&D? D&D? Whatever happened to good ol' B&D? :D heh
Teej : the baseball bats were found (I think I have about 5 of them all up), we don't find hockey sticks that frequently around these parts.

Alrik : Yeah that kid in Mad Max was deadly with a boomerang but what if they're at my car? I don't want boogie-man blood on the Commodore.
Besides, all the fun is lost without real contact, the baseball bats are only if I'm out numbered or if I'm too far back to reach them before they jump the fence.

Besides the car the only thing worth stealing would be my weights and benches etc. And you would have to be pretty dumb to pinch Gym stuff. It'll be like stealing someone's martial arts suit and blackbelt from the clothes line..... deathwish 2002!! 8)~

Chris : Yeah mate, I know exactly what you mean. I got the old CB out to take on our trip to Bathurst but we left 5 hours earlier than planned and didn't have time to fit it to my brother's car.

Hehe, I know I know. My friend is into the 3rd edition now and a lot of the stuff is just backwards. Been a while since I played though; I kinda miss it.

LOL! I just picture some goof with a 500 pound sack full of Acca's weights hobbling down the sidewalk in a desperate attempt to escape a bat-weilding Aussie! ^_^ ^_^
