In the meantime a review is available HERE (http://www.gamesdomain.com/gdreview/zones/previews/apr02/f12k2.html) jtace 04-08-2002, 02:26 PM Interesting.. :) MATT 04-08-2002, 04:46 PM :Puke: They expect me to believe that McLaren is a 2002 model? Give me a break. 2001 model was the first and only time since Adrian Newey designed the car that they had a high nose like that.. they've gone back to the lower-nose design of the earlier Newey McLarens (read: 1998-2000 cars). Who do these guys think they're fooling!? lol. Luckily for them, the 2002 Williams doesn't have too many major differences in design, but there's still a few descrepencies :P Leave it to me to criticize everyone else's work and not do a damn thing myself :D [XR](\/)power 04-08-2002, 04:50 PM This looks like a game for which I'll need a GeForce 3 Ti 500...crapeth Domagoj 04-08-2002, 05:45 PM It seems pretty wierd to me how the NFS series of games can have such lush graphics, but F1 titles SUCK. Like F12000, I bought it with NFS5 when they came out, but played it literally 2 or 3 times - it looks like Pole Position. This F12002 doesn't look much better at all. Hell, look at some NFS4 and NFS5 screenshots and you wonder what these people are thinking, working on a game for a year and not having much to show for it. Anyhow, I don't think I'll ever buy a crap F1 game anymore, unless they bridge the gap SOMEWHAT between Pole Position and NFS. I mean come on, NFS5 is 2 years old, NFS4 3 years old, and I still haven't seen a racing game with graphics anywhere near as nice. Even Rallycar Challenge for XBox looks like NFS5 textures a little souped up. It's astounding how far ahead of the rest of the market NFS is in terms of not only graphics, but gameplay, and host of other features. Project Gotham Racing is another one that's only marginally better looking than NFS5 (if at all), yet is far more recent. I don't own an XBox, my friend does, but personally I think it's the biggest waste of cash...especially Halo - what an overhyped piece. Tribes 2 thrashes it - Tribes 1 thrashes it - it's a little kiddy game compared to PC games. I guess that's how things will stay... WCOutlaw 04-08-2002, 06:16 PM Uhhhm, you seen GPL recently? or, how about Nascar 4 or Nascar 2002?? They'd kick ass graphically and physically out of NFS5, let alone NFS4... and GPL is over 4 years old... Even Ultim@te Race Pro (an old arcady game from about '97) had the same sort of "awesome" graphics and physics that NFS: Porsche 2000 has (NFS5) I mean come on, it wasn't that good, though it was good... Spiderman 04-08-2002, 06:22 PM One thing I can't do is fault the eye candy in this game. Unfortunately it does need a mother of a card and loads of memory to display at its best which is a major gripe. I played it though before my upgrade on a voodoo 3 and though it was on the lowest settings for graphics the game play still made it my game of choice even then. Talk of blocky? It was a shocker I can tell you but fun all the same. I have seen some new shots from people with the new track artwork and carsets, tyres etc, from the peeps on high gear which look even better. One day I will pluck up the courage to experiment like that. Maybe on a backup install. The graphics always look bad in screenshots on reviews probably because they save or play in low graphics or compress for the web. I have even compressed these to 800 x 600 http://www.btinternet.com/~vvp/Grab_1.jpg http://www.btinternet.com/~vvp/Grab_2.jpg http://www.btinternet.com/~vvp/Grab_3.jpg http://www.btinternet.com/~vvp/Grab_4.jpg http://www.btinternet.com/~vvp/Grab_5.jpg http://www.btinternet.com/~vvp/Grab_6.jpg Vince Klortho 04-08-2002, 07:00 PM I consider the graphics in F1 2001 to be really good. Especially in the GT mod. Domagoj 04-08-2002, 07:44 PM Well I admit I am partial to the NFS series, but it's no joke that those F1 games seem a bit lop-sided in their development. Like the people in the stands - do they move around? If they do that's a ton of processing power that could be used to make the surroundings more lush, but then again F1 tracks are usually pretty bland-looking with track, grass on the sides, and some sponsors' signs, except for the scenery behind if there's no wall on the sides. Taking a second glance at those pics, the grass and dirt on the side of the road does look pretty crisp, and so do the cars and the rest, but I wonder what the cars look like when driving - for some reason those games like far more processing power to run, while looking abour the same as other ones. I've seen the Nascar 2002 demo - it looked vomitous to me, but again, maybe it's just the type of game that doesn't appeal to me. Nascar racing is less thrilling setting records on, if you ask me, but hey, I am an NFS fiend ;) But seriously, do some Pyrenees bw and take a good look at the rock textures, they look quite good. Maybe I miss the scenery in F1 and Nascar games. It just seems dull to me. Anyhow, GPL looks pretty cool (just saw the review for the first time), but I'd care very little for 1967 cars when I can go 400kmh in some new madman's machine. NFS does it all for me. Anything else is just crap :) D_Man 04-08-2002, 08:31 PM GPL is the best racing game game - bar none :D You haven't played a racing sim/game until you have thrown the Ferrari around the 174 turns of the Nurburgring or hit 200mph in the Eagle approaching Masta, gritting your teeth as you try to make it through without crashing. That is ehat it's all about. Nascar racing is less thrilling setting records on, if you ask me, but hey, I am an NFS fiend ;) The cars look just as good in a full blown race. The crowds don't move and can be turned off to save processing power. I think there are five levels of track detail to tweak. If I run a full grid I generally turn off non essentials to increase frame rate but I never mess with the cars detail level, shadows or special effects or pit crews which help to give a race the atmosphere I like. I suppose more stuff which eats processing power will be added for F12002 but as long as they can be switched on and off I won't complain too much. Graphics do matter but gameplay is probably more important to me. It's a juggling act to get everything you want from a game innit? I would play F12001 in low detail if I had too. personal taste or masochistic streak? Beats me. :D 1nsane is brill too for some offroad mayhem when I'm in the mood. I have thrown a ferrari around in gpl D_Man and all I can say is it is a matter of taste. I never really liked the game firstly because it is based on a dead sports race of the last century and secondly because I consider most GPLers a bore to the tenth degree. :D D_Man 04-09-2002, 12:46 AM Hehe Rob - some GPL guys do take themselves way too seriously, but I still love the game ^_^ Is it just me or do those cars in the screen shots seem to be floating about a centimetre above the bitumen? Dave Myshkin 04-09-2002, 01:20 AM <--- Bore ^10 :D Yeah there are people that take it too seriously... but what does that have to do with playing the game? I roll my eyes sometimes when someone says they won't use a gated shifter on a car because the original didn't have one... I like GPL's realism and can accept that some people enjoy things more because of such details, but for me it is the racing, the speed and the difficulty of GPL. Nor do I care that this was 35 years ago... again I think that this point is irrelevant. It's fun because this was before wings and these cars are hauling ass with little grip. I have to agree with Deman, threading the Masta needle at 180 mph... it's a game but I'm still on the edge of my seat. I was racing one of the aliens last week that was going through there at 190 mph and doing regular 3:13 laps... quite a nice guy (Jonathan Davis) and I don't know why Rob would have a problem with most of us... or are you just talking about the realism nuts, or the ones that think GPL is the end-all be-all? Unfortunately my problem with modern F1 games is modern F1 itself. No need to go into this here... oh and I'm a GPL'er that thinks PU is a great game also. My only problems with PU are that there are only few tracks that I've run into the ground, combined with faulty servers... give me new tracks, not cars just some tracks and I would be back yet again. Anyway, I say play whatever floats your boat... look at what has happened with all of us former-PU'ers... some went to Nascar, some went to modern F1, some to SCGT and some to GPL... these are people that all had fun together on PU. I don't think any one of them are bad... I've played SCGT, F12k1CS demo and the Nascar demo... if it weren't for the US$50 price tag that some of us workers ;) can't go spending 4 times a year as EA comes out with F12k2 Senior Racing, F12K2 Your Momma Against the Best I might try a full version of F1 just to see but gosh darnit (excuse my language) every time it looks like the price might fall below $39 a new version comes out... and I don't want the old versions do I? Oh yeah, I forgot the other reason... the big red EA on the boxes remind me that this is the company that brought us PU (good) and all of the bugs, cheats, lame-ass decisions (bad)... and I am reluctant to give them any more money. Man why am I still writing? Good point... cya later ;) Spiderman 04-09-2002, 05:18 AM Of course I don't mean you boys! How could you take it that way. I think we all know the people I am talking about. We all have a litle bit of a GPL bore whithin us. I played the game for a few months gave it up got the bug for another few weeks and gave it up again. I do that with a lot of games but now if I get the bug it would take days for me to get it installed. I only ever played the original graphics etc not being a great one for moding as it all gets so bloody complicated. A self extracting patch and some text editing I can deal with anything else is expecting too much. I also do need a sense of speed. I never got it from GPL. I always felt I was floating on a calm sea and the other cars seem boat like too. All drifting along. The cars of the period look ugly to me too. Again down to taste but something to consider since looking at cars is part of the fun in a game. With practice things are learned and times get better. I see no difference between GPL and any other game in that respect. It takes a good setup also again something not unknown to other games. What gets my goat is whenever I meet GPLers on the net they instantly see themselfves as the only true drivers. If they get their arse kicked by the likes of us (not me usually hehe) then it is because the fizzicks are all bloody wrong and they were confused. After the confusion comes anger. Why are they making me play this shit? they ask to which I normally reply "Go to a GPL sacntuary my son, true simmers await your return". It is a good game and I can see some of the graphical improvements with my own eyes. But I don't play a game because it has critical acclaim for long unless it can grip me by the gonads. GPL doesn't do it for me :( Gimme wings and I will [not] fly away! D_Man I think you will find they are floating 0.75mm above the bitumen. You get more speed that way. ;) edit: Fair point on the price of getting new games Mysh. I wish I could be a GPL lover for that reason if no other. I don't have many vices as I said before somewhere so the games I get make up for holidays I don't go on to foreign parts or visits to gin joints with loose women. I would never praise EA but ISI and all the other codies deserve the real credit for new games anyway. |
