Just curious if there is a utility out there that can help me copy my win 98 system over to the XP system. I have 2 computers and i want to merge the data to the newer one if possible. so basically what i would like to do is to copy all my installed prgs from the 98 os to the xp. wondered if there is a shortcut other than having to re install everything from scratch.

Doesn't XP offer to do this for you. I think on the XP installation CD there is a utility that will do this for you IIRC. At least on the XP Pro CD IIRC.

I can't be certain because it has been ages since I've used the install CD, XP Pro is just super-reliable. :) I only ever use the CD to access the recovery console for when I want to make some changes XP normally won't allow me to perform.

that is my problem. I just bought the new computer and it was to come with windows XP home edition. well it kinda did. it is already installed on the system and i have no disk. SO therefor i am kinda stuck i believe. oh well heres looking forward to a long long couple of days trying to install and get everythign setup again. hehe

Oh, that throws a spanner in the works.

Is there any chance of demanding they give you the CD they probably should have included anyhow? Or do they just include one of these recovery disks like what I've seen included with many computers now (Sony VAIO, HP Pavillion, etc).

I purchased XP Pro along with computer hardware so I have the OEM CD and the condensed printed user-manual. If it comes to the crunch, try getting an OEM version of XP Pro if you can, and if you can afford it. That's what I'd personally recommend if demanding they give you a XP install CD doesn't work.

If that's not possible, then probably the only way is to just reinstall everything and scream for help if something doesn't work. ;)

Computer makers should be mandated to include the original Windows install CD with the computer. What happens now if you wanted to use IIS, and they've not installed it by default?

well it was supposed to be included and never said that it was just installed. I will have to dig and see what all is there. it is at my friends right now as that is where we plan the attack hehe. thanks for the info

I know here in australia its now illegal to pre install a OS without supplying the CD to the person who buys the PC
Harvey Norman got in big shit for that a few years back
In XP theres a file transfer program somewere for bring files from old PC to new PC

don't they have these restoration cd's for stuff like that? like with ALL the software that came on the comp, that's for compaq and dell and stuff.

I can't stand XP, it lags too much for me, and the settings were haywire, all of a sudden it decided to not connect to the internet at all and then it did and now it doesn't plus, my games don't like working in xp either, so I stick with reliable for me, Melenium Edition.

What I find strange is that XP will run fine on so many computers, yet on others, it runs badly.

I even ran it on a computer with an AMD K6/2-500mhz processor, and it ran perfectly, and quickly. I thought that computer had problems, but in the end it turned out just to be Windows 98, because XP Pro ran so well on that computer. It started so much faster than 98 did, and that really surprised me.

VQ: Restoration CD's are all fine and well, but what happens if you want to use IIS, or another extra included on the XP CD, and by default it wasn't installed?

Then you can't use something that is included with Windows, because you have no way to install it. And to put it bluntly, you are not getting what you have paid for. You should ALWAYS get the install CD's to go with the programs you have on the computer.

Recovery CD's alone are unsatisfactory, and very bad. If they won't include all the install CD's to go with the software they include, then the company does not deserve your business. Only by doing that will the black-sheep of the PC industry learn to adopt best practices.

I didn't get it myself, my freind did on their brand name computer, it does have about 6 cd's and all the stuff is installed already off the home XP cd.

I'm in XP pro atm, my only niggle with it is mainly the lag sometimes and the fact it uses 152mb of ram without trying, and I only have 384mb now which is better then before.

And the fact everytime I use the cd my music program plays up if the cd drive is working.

guys i found a prg that worked and i recommend it very highly. It is called Move me. it is at www.spearit.com a great prg that not only moved all the files but it moved the registry etc. I only had to check what prgs still worked with the XP which turned out to be all of em.

I wouldnt see why not. i transfered everything from one computer to another the first was win 98 and the second was XP and everything worked fine. the only draw back is it costs some bucks to get the prg but in my case was well worth it.

I thought XP had a restore program itself, it does on Pro I know that.

If you mean the xp transfer prg it only transfers the setups of certain prgs. this transfers everything including registry settings and the prgs themselves so you dont have to reinstall them.

Ive found XP to be better on all our PC's except my mums laptop because it is low spec so it did take forever to load! On our Dell 566 Mhz with 128 mb ram it runs fine, thats what I'm using in my room and ive yet to have problems with XP itself.

I found ME to be fine for the first 2 or 3 weeks then it'd slowly "crash and burn" for no real reason to the point it'd become unstable and hard to use

Anyways our Dell come with the Win 98 recovery CD, not worth the 3 cent disc they used! In the time we had 98 installed on it, which was quite a few years, we never once used it! The only time we've ever needed to use the Win 98 cd was to re-install, and how do you do that when the CD that came with it doesnt have install on it?

What chris said is right though, you can find legit OEM CD's with the manuals and a piece of hardware (as I believe the law is it must be sold with a piece of hardware) cheap, just gotta look!

Anyway bug great to hear you found a program and it did what you needed it too!
