About three weeks ago, I attended to Assembly 2004 happening and got a possibility to test BugBear's upcoming Flat Out on the MikroBitti's stand. (MikroBitti is the biggest computer enthuastic magazine in finland.)
The game was special demo build for Assembly 2004 (single drivable car, single track. AI opponents had other cars as well.) and it was running on PCs and though specs weren't told, but I think those were something like Middle End P4's with Ati Radeon 9800Pros. As a controller, Logitech Momo wheel was provided.
The Game:
Graphics were looking good, though not spectacular. Game ran (though being a beta.) pretty well. Immense of speed isn't like in NFS U, but still better than in regular racing games. Physics engine seemed to be really nice as it also affects on track side objects as well. Car damage model is more than a suffient though personally I would rather like to have seat belts for the driver. (hitting on tree with 30 km/h causes the driver to be catapulted out from the car and though it is realistic feature, it gets a bit annoying when you are practising the game.) Driver is animated with ragdoll physics, so if you are in big crash with others, you can see quite few bodies bouncing in the air. :)
Sounds and Music:
Sounds are regular engine screaming, bumps and thumps that are ok. Music again supports the racing action so well that you don't even notice it, But will definately notice if it's missing.
How it feels like?
It's a very good mixture of simulation and arcade. steering and how the car handle is very nicely balanced mixture, which at least to me caused a "one more try" -syndrome. AI seemed to be much more human than it was in Rally Trophy. (in RT, AI was too fast or just too slow.)
as a single sentence: "very nice Scrap Yard Racer, with good playability and Graphics that do the trick and havin fun is the name of the game."
as a single question: "Where do I sign to get it right now?" :)
