just wondering if anyone here has ever approached a team trackside and offered some $$$ for any damaged parts?

I realised late last year that V8 Supercar teams are more then happy to sell damaged parts if you offer enough, or are willing to negotiate. I know they dont "advertise a sale on parts" as its just asking for a large group to pick a piece of their fav race car literally, but if your that much of a die hard fans most smaller teams will sell (as the larger / more popular teams usually donate to charity auctions)

I realised after the last round last year, me and mickcals walked past one of the teams who on the previous day had run into something in practice and thus bent the front of the bonnet. We noticed the damaged bonnet was just sitting outside the pit garage.

As it turns out I later found out had we just grabbed the first team crew member and offered $$$ we coulda walked away with it. Apparently a few guys have just asked how much, or offered money for parts sitting outside the garage.

I was wondering if anyone here might have been so lucky to pick up a part of their teams car?

Now I wouldn't mind Raikkonen's rear wing, which blew off.. Could certainly make some stand/sculpture in the corner of my room. :D

It has never even occurred to me, actually. I suppose some parts would be worth collecting, while others might be useful, who knows.

I DO love swap meets though! Those great parts that never wear out are easy to find at a swap, like intakes, pulleys etc, and plus, somtimes one can find something rare. I found my Holley Street Dominator intake at a swap meet, and they haven't made those for over a decade. Nice unit when cleaned up!

Body parts from F1 cars tend to be quite collectable, especially if the car they are for (or from) has important historical significance.

Someone recently had some genuine Tyrell P34 body parts up for sale. The parts were apparently given to that person by Ken Tyrell himself.

Of course the price would have been quite high, given the sort of historical significance the P34 has. It started the whole 6 wheeled F1 car craze, resulting in the Williams FW08, and a March 6 wheeler.

Difference between P34, and the cars that it inspired was that the Tyrell had 4 small wheels at the front for steering, while the others had 4 huge driven wheels at the back. Great for traction that, but I wonder about the handling... The P34's with their 4 small wheels at the front also had the advantage that the small front wheels effectively sat behind the rear wing, and it deflected the air over the tyres, so they caused little penalty in aero-drag. The car did very well in fact.

Derek Gardner, the car's designer once said:

"It performed very well, much to peoples amazement. They didn't think it was driveable!"

Shame the 6 wheeled cars eventually got banned. They were so interesting. :) However I don't mourn the loss of the Tea-pot style air-boxes.. Those were simply ugly. The Ligier JS5 made those things famous with its ghastly great lump of airbox standing too tall! Do a search on google and you'll probably find it.

hmm I almost had a shot on the weekend to snap a bargain

Greg Murphys #51 Kmart car ran up the back of the Dynamik car during practice and afterwoods in the pit they had "offers accepted" on the damaged front splitter.

I asked them would they accept $20 and they laughed and said no, so I offered $100. They told me if I had the cash for sure and I could pick it up the next day when they would have it autographed

It was only the front passenger side damaged, and if I had somewhere to put it I woulda brought it!

Although I still just want something small like a headlight or a small part thats been ripped off, I can display in a cabinet not a full blown front spoiler!

Although I doubt you could ever snag one, getting hold of one of the onboard cameras would be the cats ass!

Forgot to mention, that I hadn't bought anything, however, at Rally of NZ, April 2003, I was watching some cars go past between the stages, and a really buggered up car went past. Bits of crap was falling off it, and landed at my feet. Well it was only foam stuff. Maybe insulation of some sort. I still got it here in a drawer. Just something totally random I got.
A pity it isn't a spoiler.
