Hi fellas I would be pleased if some of U* guys/girls could help me out!?

@ first: I didn't install/delete any drivers/software/hardware. My AniVir programm didn't find any viruses or worms...whatever...

@ second: I raced in the morning today, that's why I'm going to be  'cause I can't run PU now, in the afternoon!!

problem:

I entered the [RS] IP-L like always, the lobby appears, after a while [XR]zlur opened a pit. I joined as normal, PU starts. The trailer appers, I skip, PU loading screen appears, I hear the sound when normally the menu appears where I choose my persona...but it didn't. So PU hangs out on that loading screen. I 'alt tabed' after a few mins. I was allowed to enter the desktop normally so. I closed PU with help of the taskmanager. I tried to start PU without running the IP-L, no changes. Well, I rebooted my computer, no luck again. I put the PU cd in another drive, sheesh....no commments. I checked the cd if it were damaged in any way...all ok. I reinstalled PU... =(( .

From this morning the now I didn't changed any things on my system, I just got the problem with PU.

Am playing PU on a Win98SE system, a AMD XP 2000+, GF 4600-Ti/128MB, 512 DDR-RAM main memory...

I don't see any reason for this 'event' .

Am =(( for some :help: !!

Thank U*.

Awful news, Christoph!

One question: any problems with any other game, or it is just PU?

Nope, while I can't play PU I had some mad races on Underground ^_^ , when I read your post I tried MBWR to be sure that it's just PU.

Well, Rick (FR2) guided me during the problem (deleting PU, SW2, PU stats, IP-L, NCOPS). I uninstalled all this programms, then I rebooted my comp. And I installed PU, tried to run it without any of the called programms. Now I have every proggy on my comp again, no change :(.

mR NO Head ...or was it mR MC HMD?? whoever had a guess that my save file could be corrupted.

So I downloaded the savfix from NO-site...just a question....How to use this proggy??

Hi Christoph,

I was thinking alot of your problem, and still I am not any wiser :(

I would try the following steps:

1. run Main_PU_Folder\3DSetup\3DSetup.exe, and try to run PU. If it loads OK, Chose Quick Race and try it. If OK try online...

2. Save your Main_PU_Folder\SaveData\x[MC]Heill.sav, [MC]Heill1.hud and [MC]Heill2.hud files on freshly formatted floppy diskette AND to at least 1 another place on your hard disk, for example C:\SAVPU1 and C:\SAVPU2.

3. rename your presona file Main_PU_Folder\SaveData\x[MC]Heill.sav to (for example) x[MC]Heill.s_v. Run PU and create NEW persona, for example Test. If PU runs, enter Evo mode, buy Ferdinand, run race, win, upgrade your car and run race again....

If all this work, your x[MC]Heill.sav is very likely corrupted indeed!

In this case, rename your *.s_v file back to *.sav and run that "savfix" program, which I do not know much about, and pray that it will work ;)

If not, there is some chance for manual repair, but I would not accept that, but rather do Evolution from the start again... It is longer, but the only safe way!

GL Christoph!

Really big thank U* about your thoughts , but like I thought...it didn't help :(. Till now I reinstalled PU 3 times or so.

My first try was only reinstall PU (just clicked on that button when PU cd made autoplay). So the installshield deleted all PU related files, except the savegames and it didn't deleted the directories. Well, I tried to play...no luck.

On next try I deleted PU completely and all the files and programms which have anything to do with PU. I installed the game on the other partition called d:\ ...but I did the mistake and copied the savedatas back into PU folder...so it didn't work.

On my last try I deleted/uninstalled every PU related stuff and PU itself again. Installed it on the d: partition again, just didn't paste the savedata into PU folder. Well, but the game also stopped on the loading screen :(.

That's why I didn't give much hope in your idea...'cause I don't think that the savegames are corrupted. But I tried like U* mentioned.

I also had some programms running which checked Windows to any mistakes...also no mistake found (no virus, no worm like I said, then I runned a thing called dxdiag it didn't find anything and a tried a thing called SFC it didn't find anything, too, all drivers and system specs looking okay. (btw thank U* for your supports: Ash, Jean and Rick :))

hm...ten minutes ago I did change the vid-driver for the gra-card...I installed the latest from the NVIDIA homepage...but the problem don't want to leave me :(.

Tell me something good pleaSe Rok!! Mario maybe?? I'm really not in the mood to format my pc o_O.

Do you have any other VGA cards lying around? Maybe, uhmmm, like a 3DFX card :D :D :D

I had a similar problem with my Voodoo 3000 in PU, I DL'ed 3DFX Underground Tools and changed a few settings, now it works.

I think you have a video card problem.

Hi Christoph, So PU hangs out on that loading screen. Am playing PU on a Win98SE system, a AMD XP 2000+, GF 4600-Ti/128MB, 512 DDR-RAM main memory...
Hmmm, that triggered flash in my memory...

Is there rage hard drive activity at the time?

If yes then:

1. Click "Start" / "Settings" / "Control Panel"

2. Double-click "System". Properties window appears.

3. Chose "Performance" tab

4. Press "Virtual Memory"

5. Mark "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings", and enter 256 into both Minimun" and "Maximum" input fields

6. Press "OK" two times to leave "Properties" window

7. Restart PC and try if PU runs now...

Although this is the trick which was used to make PU run on Win 2K/XP, it is worth to try it on your Win 98.

If this do not help either, then return the VM setting back to the standard "Let Windows manage my VM"...

I can't think of anything more :(

GL Heil!

Okay Rok :)!!

I'll try that when my upload will be finished (maybe in this eve), can't restart my comp earlier  .

Didn't U* tell me yesterday that U* are clueless?? And what am I seeing, a new idea ^_^ .

Big thX :shake: and  !!

btw...What did Mads say yesterday, when I was about to leave?? Didn't he say something like that someone had same probs in the past??

lol dude ^_^,

well, I have a GF 2 MX 32MB and a SiS something 8MB. Never had a 3DFX card nor I saw one in reality ;).

Am not sure if it's a v-card problem, 'cause I can run every game, except PU.

btw...What did Mads say yesterday, when I was about to leave?? Didn't he say something like that someone had same probs in the past??Yes Christoph.

He said that he had similar problem, not with loading the PU, but with occassional short 'freezings' during races.

Nothing helped but reformating startup partition and reinstallation of whole system.

Speaking of this, to prepare for such drastic operation if needed, can you make text file which contains your folder structure of your C: drive?

1 "Start", "Programs", "MS-DOS Prompt" ... DOS box appears

2. type following commands:

C:
CD \
DIR /a /s *. > C_DIR.TXT
EXIT

Note: only 1 (one) * is used, not 2 as in *.*

3 ZIP the C_DIR.TXT and send it to me.

This will enable me to see how complex (or simple) your OS + Apps installation is, what all should be reinstalled in case if NOTHING else helps but reformat/reinstall ...

NewWheel

I got it Christoph :)

After quick look, it seem that it is not too complex to do reinstallation, but let's leave this for the very last step :D

Here are some further questions for deciding "to reinstal or not to reinstal" ;)

Do you have at hand installation programs for all those (few) applications (and games of course) which you really need and use?

I found trace of Windows 2000 or XP on your C: drive. Do you have (or had) dual-boot system (for example Win98 + XP)? If so, is the 2nd OS installed on D: drive (partition)?

Do you have 1 or more physical drives in your PC?

Is your D: drive separate drive or just a partition of the first (single) drive?

How much free space have you on the D: drive (and other hard drives if they exist)?

What are capacities (? GB) of all your hard disk drives (partitions)?

These questions are intended to see if you have enough free space to save your MC web pages, music and other "data" files, which are now located within C: drive (partition), and also for determining the best configuration (separation of OS + applications from "data" files), so that hassle of any further reinstallation in the future (if needed) will be reduced to minimum...

X-ing fingers that this won't be needed :)

:Peace:

P.S. The lattest nVidia drivers are NOT the best fo PU! At least they will prevent you to do task switching (Alt-Tab) from/to PU =[

I found the old 30.82 driver (July 2002) as a quite good "compromise" which works great for PU, and is still capable enough for handling at lest those few newer games which I have (or just tried them)...

Hey Rok :),

eieiei, so many questions ^_^ ! I'll try to answer.

It's just one physical hard-drive running here. I slpitted it into 4 partitions (which I founded out wasn't so good, not the splitting itself, am more meaning to the single sizes from these partitions  ). It's a 80GB hdd, which has two NTFS and two FAT32 partitions, so the two NTFS aren't visible from Win98. And in a silly way I gave the most space for WinXP (which I'am not using that much, 'cause I can't get online there). I would prefer the WinXP, 'cause it's more faster than the current Win98SE, but it is also more instable here...oops....am drifting away from the topic :p.

Well, the c: drive got 5GB, 'cause I only wanted to install Win98 staff there, the d: drive got 10 GB to put this software on it which wouldn't run on XP. So the most part of the space is NTFS and works for WinXP (which is soo daft, 'cause the most space is empty...).

So I called c: drive 'Win98', d: drive 'Programme2', then there are the other drives called 'WinXP' and 'Programme'. WinXP, guess I gave it 15 GB and the other drive got the rest of 50 GB (normally it was 60, but when I realised that space is too less for Win98 I made a new partition, which is still be too less...sheesh...)

So I guess on that 50 GB drive are 30 GB free :). I know I won't have to fear the lose of any datas, 'cause it's just needed to format c: drive and the WinXP one. But I would prefer to make the whole pc clean and would change the drive's space-sizes!

If I really won't have any space, I also own still my old comp, which has some freespace (around 3 to 4 GB).

Anyway, my current system look a bit crappy. :p

lol...that was my current target to sepperate the software from the OS...maybe I forgott over the time  .

Oh yea, I know that the latest drivers aren't the best, but am always going to forgett the right driver name...can't hold the digits in my mind :p.

Thanks Christoph for detailed information :)

As OS and programs fits together, I think that 3 partitions would be enough, something like:

C: FAT32 Win 98SE, Win98 specific programs, Games
D: FAT32 common "data", web page, documents, music, e.t.c.
E: NTFS Win XP, XP programs

This way OS specific programs do not mix and you have access to the largest common D: partition from both OS-es...

But, let's shoot out our remaining amo first :D

Tell us if custom memory setting helps, after that DL will finish.

Double X-ing fingers now ^_^

Hey Rok ,

well, I got PU running now. But I can't enter the IP-Lounge =(( . It doesn't show the local ip adress, so I see the reason for 'no-entering access'. But why doesn't it show the addy?? I e-mailed to that support link from rs-site yesterday, just got no response so far...

Well, so I got my Windows running and another problem, too, which I posted in the main forum.

What the h***, one problem solved and two other appears?? That isn't fair :(.

edit: And I forgott to tell U* that there's no sound in PU =[ . I hear the button's sound in the auto-run-menu, but since the trailer starts there's no sound in PU. =((
