I was looking at EBGames.com and I see they have the Need for Speed: Collection for $19.99. I’m somewhat interested in purchasing this…
It comes with 5 Titles:
Need for Speed II: SE
Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit
Need for Speed: High Stakes
Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2
I really was looking to buy High Stakes, but for $10 bucks more if you can get 4 more titles it’s a bargain…
My question is, I run XP Home, will SE, Hot Pursuit and High Stakes run on my system???

Hi George :),

This is just a guess, but it might be because they would have to lower the price of the bundle to $14.99 if it were included? Most states have environmental laws that prohibit people from just tossing certain items out with the garbage. The price drop would help cover the waste disposal fee surcharge. ^_^

XP should support those games out of the box. If not there is a way to "force" XP to play them by right-clicking on the game icon , choosing properties and then choosing compatability mode. Try running the game in 98/ME; that should work.
If noe, drop a line and I'll try something else.
Peace.
Er...*not*, even...^_^

The NFS Collection was released before NFS:U, btw - petty comments about it being garbage... well... :nono:
I bought it up here in Canada ($19.99 CDN) - was well worth it, now I have another copy of PU for private LAN games, as well as HP2, which I never wanted to buy, but at that price, I'm all happy...
High Stakes I got running without an issue, only thing is the Software mode thing (Windows XP), but that's fixed with a patch I believe.
Enjoy George -^ :)

It doesn't have the first NFS game? Ouch. That and NFS-PU were easily the best titles of the bunch.
In TNFS, driving the Viper was an experience. All the cars were quite distinct, decent physics (nothing noticeably wrong, just not quite hi-fi) and a great deal of fun! Hey and it had an RX-7 in it :D.
If the collection had that game, I'd recommend getting it without hesitation. Without TNFS, though, I'd say... well, hesitate ;)

I saw that bundle in my "local" game store, it was 20.000 colones, which is about 50 USD, and i said... "Should or should i not, it doesn't have TNFS..." and then went to the net and saw it for 19 USD. They really take advantage of you when you live in another country that is not US or any other mayor country... anyway, i went to Amazon.com and spent my 20 bucks in F1 Challenge '99-'02

Looks like there is still a market for NFS. They have added 2 games to the original NFS pack I bought over a year ago. Anyone recall This post with a picture I took of the box? (http://www.racerplanet.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=114087&highlight=costco#post114087)
Next trip I take to Costco I'll have to see if they have the new 5 game pack.

Same here, thats the first thing i thought of... TNFS started it all, and it could quite possibly be the greatest of them all as well. They really should add it to the bunch.

If I had to guess, TNFS probably would be more difficult to get to run in XP since it's more or less a DOS program. (yes, there was kinda a Windows version, but...) If so, they probably wouldn't want the problems of releasing a game that may not run or be difficult to run on most of the computers out there. NFS2 and later were all 100% Windows.
Of course, I could be completely wrong, i've never tried to run TNFS on XP. I still think TNFS was the best of the bunch. PU was close, but lack of Hot Pursuit mode and one make only (admitedly my favorite make, but still, i'd like some variety beyond Porsche) throws it out for me.

To run HS on 2k or xp , you have to use the acompat.exe utitility on the setup program . Check 98/ME compatibility , and run setup.exe directly . The game does a complete install , then seems to " hang " at the end of the installation .
When you reach this point , give it at least a minute to make sure it really is done installing , then hit [ctrl] [alt][del] and bring up the task manager . Use the taskmanager to end task the setup program , or to reboot the computer ( either will work ) .
* Note , if you try to end it any other way , it will uninstall the program again and you'll be back at square one .
There are a few ways to get it to run out side of "software" mode , probably the easiest being to edit the registry . there are quite a few sites listing the methods to do this .
About the original being the only worthwhile NFS in the pack , I'm not sure I'd agree with that . Everything said about it was true enough , the Viper was a hoot to drive , the cars all did have their own personality , and it was a breakthrough for its time . However , while I didn't much care for 2 , The rest of the titles in that pack still get regular play time on my machine .
I realize I'm probably alone in this opinion , but I still find 3 to be the best overall in the series so far for a number of niggling reasons ( although certainly not for its physics heh heh ) . Suprisingly enough , its the only one I've had that installed flawlessly on 2k or Xp without having to do anything , it plays the best over tcp/ip , its chat room interface still has yet to be beaten i.m.h.o. , and while the physics dept was lacking the cars handled a ton more naturally than HS's did ( specially if you went a little onto the shoulder which in HS made the car act like you were riding on top of a guard rail ) .
And while I prefer PU for the full handling package / physics thing , it is still limited to one make / brand of cars , has no cop chase ability , and lacks even traffic in mp mode .
I guess if I were rating the games in the order I liked them , NFS3 would be 1 , TNFS se would be 1.25 - 1.5, and PU would be 2 , with HS AND HP2 tying for 3rd . ( Sacriledge , eh? Even mentioning HP2 and HS together ??? ) .
For the price they are asking , I'd say that pack was money safe in the bank -^

I remember having HS installed on this XP PC just after I bought the PC, 2 years ago,and i don't recall having to do anything different to install it the way Sir Bogs described.I even tried the HS servers a couple of times, but HS online never ran as smoothly as PU does, even with the Spot patch.
I have heard from many ppl that TNFS was a great game, but I've never seen a copy anywhere.I would imagine tho, that by today's standards, the graphics would be unacceptable to most of us.
@ Dennis;The NFS 5 pack is available at Costco.Up here it's $19.95 CDN,so that's,what,about $14.95 USD,but I already have 2 copies of PU,a copy of HS and no real interest in NFS11,or HP2,so,I'll save my beaverbucks for WR11.:D

Just for the record , I've also seen HS install on an XP machine with no discernible problems . Unfortunately , I've seen it go the other way just as often . I dont know what causes that behavior ( flawless or not installation ) , but I do know it happens .
About 9 times out of 10 , when you start HS's installation normally , you'll get a message saying something to the effect of " this game wasn't designed to run on NT " or some such .
Naturally , you then switch to the compatibility program and install it making it think its installing on 9x . Its at this point where you'll know if you have to follow the rest of the directions I laid out , if it finishes the install , it will be apparent within a minute , if not , the last black screen of the installer will just sit there forever .
If you then click the [x] to close the installation window , the program will ' uninstall' itself . Go figure , shutting the program down either by end tasking it or rebooting is the only way I've found thats reliable 100% of the time .
:D Nice to see ya Ric-a-mundo -^ :D

Again, my real question is about SE, lol…
IF I buy, Most likely I will, I want to know if SE will install, because I know HS will work fine…. I already had installed it before CD broke… PU and HPII will install… Had Both, Still have PU. :p
I never had SE so I want to try it….

Easy answer, TNFS wasn't an EA game - it was Road & Tracks, so thats why it's not there I'd imagine... I do agree though, TNFS was easily the best of the series, followed by PU.

I totally agree with Chey, Chef and Phil, TNFS (SE) was definately the best. Autographing the tarmac with the Viper's tyres was a favourite pass time of mine. :hat:-^ NFS2 was crap, notta wheelspin amongst 'em. http://racerplanet.com/forum/images/icons/icon13.gif
I've tried Win98 compatibility mode, the Spot patch and about five other fixes to no avail. =[
I think that those of you who were fortunate enough to get HS working on XP may have the FAT32 format. I've been thinking of going back to FAT32 myself so I'll do that and let you know if it makes a difference to running HS. I think it's what fouled the MS FF drivers (actually Dave thought of that).

Couple things I would like to add to this.
1) To get HS out of software rendering mode on XP with a recent video card, you will need to use the SPOT patch (http://www.needforbetterspeed.net/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=169) . This fixes most issues with recognizing newer cards in 3D Setup, and changing DLL's for DirectX in HS to make them compatible.
2) I have never had to use that "Compatibility mode" installation method for HS on XP. Not sure about others, but I think that this issue is not very common.
3) I have installed NFSII-SE successfully on Windows XP. Either with a Voodoo3 or MX400 video card (Think it was on the Voodoo3 computer).
4) Disagree completely with the HS comments in above threads, feel that the HP2 physics are closer to PU than they are to HS. But I am a HS fan, mostly, so biased.....
Cheers,

No, at least that's what I thought. After all the trouble I went to buy HP 2 (I originallypurchased the game for $61 CDN, incl. taxes at Wal-Mart, but it didn't have a CD inside. Then I had to go back, wait in line and ask for a refund. Instead, I got a gift-certificate to buy it at another Wal-Mart 10 min away using the highway, or about 30 min by bus). The steering was kinda funky.. I was crashing allover the place, and dead last in every competition. &( (But that could be in part due to the game lagging my comp, and my poor driving skills though. ^_^)

Guys,
One more thought on this thread:
Several of the TNFS and NFS2SE tracks have been converted for NFS High Stakes. Some HS racers (Killya, mostly) have taken these conversions and cleaned them up. These are called the Mod0 tracks, and links to them are posted on the NFBS BB, or you can get them HERE (http://209.91.51.162/Software/Games/NFS-HS/Tracks/MOD_0_files) (user: guest, PW: alpha if you need it). There is a mixer that needs to be installed in order to move these tracks into and out of HS, but this is relatively simple to do, once installed.
These tracks have the graphics significantly enhanced from the original versions, and you can use your HS cars on them to boot!
There is even the IP Lounge that [RS]JMac has converted over for HS, so you can race them online.
Cheers,
KillRide

D/L'd & tried it. It works OK on my machine, but I had to run the NFSSB.bat file to get sounds. The start video is there and the menu music. I also have to use the mouse & kbd to play, but, what the hey. Still fun even if the graphics are way out of date now, but were ahead of their time in '95.
