Heya Ppl
I have a small problem on Win98. Bummer !
Whenever i right click on a file , it takes abt 35-40 secs for the menu to open up.
I have done everything.......run scandisk, run defrag, run spybot. but no use.
Any Help is appreciated.
Thanks anyways

G'day Volt!

That sounds weird without anything else taking a long time to start.
Not that I have any ideas for you at this point it might help if you mention a bit more info.
Does this happen when the puter is freshly booted / rebooted or is it only after a while of use? If the latter, it could be your RAM failing.

Good luck mate.

Hiya Andy! Try control/alt/del and see what you've got running in the background.Maybe you can shut some of them down to free up resourses.Adding extra ram is another option. It's cheap as dirt nowadays.

Ric: If it was a matter of too many applicants running at the same time I think he would have said that everything was slow but as he only mentions the right-click menu being slow I tend to think it's elsewhere (perhaps totally unrelated) like mouse click speed or maybe even the setting of his pop-up toaster. :D

Andy : Try kicking the tyres of your lawn mower, mate.... even if they aren't inflatable. :hat:

Thx Rob and Ric

The weird part is that, the right click works fine on desktop. I mean the right click works fine when i want to refresh it or goto desktop properties.
Only when i right click on a file , it takes 35-50 secs, and it can be quite irritiating !
I have sufficient Ram and when i goto system resources, it says that 60% of the resources are free !

Hey Andy

Do you have a lot of software installed?

It sounds to me like Windows is trying to build an index of options to include in the menu, from all the installed software.

Various applications add items to the right click menu.

Or even one of them may have corrupted a database.

G'day Tammy

It was working fine till 4 days ago, and since then i have not installed anything new.
When i right click the only things that come up are Winzip, open,Cut,Copy, Properties.

And my PC has lotsa empty space. So space cannot be a problem
Also my ram is sufficient

Check for worms. My sister had a worm and it left her completely buggered. I had one too but I managed to stop it before it got that far! ;) Get a worm scanner or suffer the horrid concequencies of being unguarded against these evil worms. That's my advice.

Heya Spiderman

Volt, I think microsoft have one on their site. There are people better informed than me on this who will no doubt point you to a good free site. I can't remember where I got my scanner (some link a few months back) but it did the job.

Andy : I had a similar prob but with me it was everything running slow. My right-click menu would eventually show sometime between me going to the toilet and making a cup of coffee. :rolleyez: Um.. obviously not whilst in the toilet. :D
In my case it was fauty RAM although your prob sounds different.
I have read in some program/utility I have (like WinHack or something) that it can alter speeds of menus and or applicants but I'm not sure which it was. Again that doesn't sound like your prob as the menu itself works fine when not used on a file.

I am assuming that the files you have tried are on your HDD and NOT a CD?

Again, I'll ask for more info to help pin-point the problem. Try all of your Hard Drives or partions to see if the problem exists equally on them all.

Sorry this is my last post for the night (Jen wants to go to bed) but I'm sure Ric or anyone else is only too willing to help you.

Good luck with it.

Ric : I hope nothing I said was taken as sarcasm or anything like that, mate. It certainly wasn't meant to be, however I am often taken wrongly.

Heya George
no i didnot download any mails recently.I did read about ur post. Also,i dont use outlook express.

Rob :
Ok i will tell u exactly wat the problem is.
The only problem i am experiencing is that when i right click on a file,in any drive, in any folder....the menu takes about 35-40 seconds to appear.I have so far run scandisk, defrag, spybot,PC doctor , but nothing seems to work.
Right clicking on the desktop seems to work fine,as the "Refresh" and Properties tab appears immiediateely as i right-click.So it cannot be a mouse problem.
Also when any application is running, say Photoshop......if i right click in the program,it works fine. When i goto File-Open in photoshop and right click on a file in the box that opens up......i still experience the problem.
The problem persists on all files, folders, directories.

Any Help is Gladly Appreciated !

Hi Andy,

What did you do before that happened ? Dont say "nothing" :)

I mean have you installed/deinstalled/deleted anything ?

I think these problems can occur if you remove (manually delete or the uninstall does not work propperly) some software that has a link in your rightclick menu (like "add to archive" or "scan with NAV"). If the program is no longer there and the entry is still there Windows keeps looking for the program.

I also had a similar problem once after installing a new video driver (dunno what OS that was). You can test if it is a driver issue by booting Windows into Save mode (F8 while booting) and see if it still happens there.

Heya FEZ

I tried ur Safe Mode Method. And looks like it has solved 90% of my problems.
When i went to safemode , the right click menu was responding well enough.
Now once i logged in normal mode, something funny is happening.
Only the first time i right click it takes 35-40 secs.....and every other right click is happening as normal.
So basically all my problems are solved, except the first right click.
And i can live with that :D
Lets hope all is solved !

I think Tammy hit the nail on the head...

Just sounds like the associations and stuff that are used in the right click menu are taking forever - get a hold of TweakUI (which will work on '98) from a google search (part of powertoys) and there should be some options to refresh and clean up things to do with that...

Good luck.

Hi Andy, hi all,
Volt: The only problem i am experiencing is that when i right click on a file,in any drive, in any folderThis leads me to suspect 'something' within the file system in your PC...

Assuming that your PC is 'clean', not infected with any virus, trojan or worm:

1. See how much free space is on your C: drive. There should be at least 2 times of the amount of your RAM capacity.

2. Check total number of files (and folders) in your system TEMP folder (normally C:\WINDOWS\TEMP or C:\TEMP). Ideally there should be none. Huge numbers there will cause similar effect as yours is. Delete ALL TEMP folder CONTENTS (files and folders), but LEAVE the TEMP folder itself in place!!!

3. If you have more than 1 hard disk (or partitions) try temporarily move swap file to the 2nd partition (Control Panel/System/Performance/"Virtual Memory")

Check response while swap file resides on 'other' partition. Is it the same? Then return swap file back to C: drive (it's normally better to keep it here).

4. Cleaning your Temporary Internet Files will not hurt either:
If you have Internet Explorer icon on your desktop, right click on it and and select properties (if not, just run IE and click "Tools" / "Internet Options"). On "General" tab click on "Delete Files", click to check sign appears in the "Delete all offline contents" (you do not need any), and press "OK"...

5. Delete all unnecessary mails from your 'Local folder'.

If nothing else, with these procedure you will clean-up yor PC from many unnecessary files and enlarge free space on the your 'system' partition, which might speed-up Windows Explorer (which is also used if you click on My computer folders) response quite a lot.

This is what I would do first in this situation...

Good luck Andy!

Heya Rok
Thanks a lot for your concern.

1) Ok, yeah i had a lot of junk in My Temps Folder.......i have deleted it all and its empty. It had a lot of notepads,*.TMP files and a couple of miscellaneoud Zip files of some downloaded levels for unreal Tournament.
2) I have two Drives.and 256 Mb ram
My C drive has 2 Gb Hard Disk Space Left and my D Drive has 210 Mb left ( i know this is less......i am gonna buy larger Hard Disk space this week )

3)I have Regularly delete all unnecessary files from My hArd Disk.
This is something that i follow every 2 weeeks.SO that part is done.

4) About the Swaping bit in Virtual Memory.......i think thats is a little too complicated. And i would not dare venture into something that i cannot handle.

Lets hope for the best.
Right now , it is right clicking properly.......but ill have to see after a couple of reboots
Lets hope for the best.

Thanks again Rok !

The problem still persists.I right clicked on My computer and it too an eternity for the menu to open up.
Still waitiing for ideas !

I am beginning to think its due to my Hard Disk Space.
Newayz.......time to goto sleep.
I'll see abt the problem later.
Thx all

Hi Andy again,

Sad news... :(

2 GB of free space on C: drive is more than enough... so 'this' is not it...

But I would like to propose another test if you are comfortable to open the PC case and do the following:

Warning: write down any changes you are going to make, to be able to properly re-set them after the experiment.

Disconnect the flat 'signal' cables from your second (D: ) drive and ANY devices which are connected to the IDE connector(s) on the motherboard, including CD rom(s), ZIP drives, e.t.c., EXCEPT your C: drive, which is the only device which must stay connected.

Reboot PC and see if response is better.

PC might not boot at all. If this happen just set jumper on your C: drive so that it is set to "single", not "master". Also check your motherboard BIOS and set second drive either to "none" or "auto".

This test will show if there is troble in communication between various IDE devices (hard disks, CD drives,...).

If C: alone works well (which I slightly doubt), then shut down PC and re-connect your IDE devices, one by one, CD unit(s) first and D: drive last... Check the response on each step.

Else just return all to their original state.

Don't forget to return the jumper of hard disk C: to the original position (and BIOS setting for drive D: ) if you had to change them, before you re-connect your D: drive.

Now, if nothing helps, I suggest that you just be patient until you will get new larger D: drive. Then, the best way is to save all valuable data from C: and D: to the new drive, format C:, and to reinstal everything...

It's a long and tiresome procedure, but it will give you fresh, clean and correct installation...

But before doing this drastic step, let us know... we will try to avoid loss of any important data...

Rest well Andy! :z :D

Volt! Youchie. Sounds like something rather unfortunate.

Go here (http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/) and download "HiJack This". Unzip the file and run it. Click the "Scan" button on the lower left of the window. Click the "Save Log", same place the "Scan" button was. Then copy and paste the log to put here in this thread. What this proggie does is it displays all the various things that your computer is doing, what's running, the things that load with your browser, stuff like that. There's been some serious security holes in MS products of late, and sometimes software gets installed on your computer without your knowledge. We can have a look at it and see what might be causing you problems, or you can post your log file to the Spyware Info Forums (http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/) and they can tell you what might be causing it.

Also try Spybot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/). Give it a download. Install it. Have it check for upgrades, download any upgrades. Quit the program and restart it. Then follow it's advice as to what to remove from your system.

It's a good thing for anyone to do with their computer(s) to keep them clean and running well.

Ok some developments.
I have realised that when i right click on IE , the menu opens up instantly. Also when i right click on Recycle Bin, the menu opens up Instantly. So i thought it must be a software problem. And the problem reappears when i right click on My Computer. Now, i gave Tammy's post a little thought. Then i realised that when i right click on my computer, the only option in the menu different in My computer from Recycle Bin and Internet Explorer is "Scan With Norton Antivirus."
So i thought the problem must be with NAV !
I uninstalled it, and once i did that, i rebooted my PC. Now, when i right click ony ANYfile , the menu opens up instantly.
So i guess the problem was with NAV.
So i did a clean uninstall on NAV and reinstalled it again, and the problem persists.

Problems keep on piling. Now once i installed NAV again and saw that the problem persists,i decided to uninstall NAV,and then some error happened.I am not able to uninstall NAV now.Anyone knows how to manually Uninstall it?

Hey, Volt! You've got a lot of spyware on your computer. The DAP (Download Acclerator Plus), the SmileyCentral, etc.

You are running Google Toolbar, that and DAP are "context menu" items, meaning that when you "right click" you are generating a menu of available options depending on the "context" (what the object your right clicking is and where it's located). It's possible these are causing problems either being conflicted or "fubar'd" to some extent.

I've passed your logfile on to those who know more about it than I do, so I'm not advising you remove or uninstall these things just yet. I'll let you know what advice is given.

As you've noticed, NAV also operates on your menu through "shell extentions".

O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll

That also generates a menu listing on the top of open windows. Hopefully we'll see what's up soon enough. Good luck, Volt!

Heya Chey
I'll tell u wat.....every time i run SpyBot , the Download Accelerator Spyware appears.I delete it everytime, but it seem to resurface everytime i use DAP.
I also use Google Toolbar to get rid of those popups and, since Google is the search engine i use its a very handy tool.

Now,i have done a clean Install. Removed all traces of Norton from the Registry etc.I encountered a few missing files problem, but that was solved.PC is back to normal.

And the best part is the right click problem is solved :D
Its working fiine with NAV installed.
Tahnks a lot everyone!
