GM Recalls 824,000 Cars to Fix SteeringDETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. (NYSE:GM - news) said on Monday it was recalling about 824,000 cars built from January 1996 through October 1997 to fix a possible power steering problem.
The world's largest automaker said models affected by the problem include the 1996 Buick Regal, the 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, the 1997-98 Oldsmobile Cutlass, Chevrolet Lumina, Monte Carlo, Malibu and 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue cars.
Some 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supremes and 1997-98 Buick Regal cars were also affected, GM said.
It said about 750,000 of the vehicles subject to the recall were in the United States while most of the remainder were sold in Canada.
In some of the vehicles a lower pinion bearing in the power steering gear may separate, causing the driver to experience an intermittent loss of power steering assist or unintended power assist, according to GM.
It said there had been reports of eight injuries that may be related to the problem but no fatalities.
Anyone own any of the recalled cars????

ACtually my dads late 2002 Holden SS Commodore, has been recalled. He has to take it in next month,
a fault in the fuel guage, which causes an inaccurate reading. So you could have no petrol, but the guage shows 1/4 full.
This happened to my dad one morning, the car wouldn't start, and his petrol was kinda low, but not that low. So he thought it was coz it was cold. But he had a petrol can at his work, and used a couple of litres, and the car started!

That isn't good, but at least it has happened after about 5 years and most of the cars would have had other problems too, becuase they might cover a lot of miles etc...
At least they have the deceny to announce it properly unlike nissan where the dealerships don't even know the recall was to happen....

Oh dear.. GM stuff-up.. But I thought only Ford did this sort of stuff??? ^_^
VQ: Nissan announced it pretty well, you only had to listen to the news to know about it. If the dealers don't know, then that is there fault, not Nissans. A lot of these dealers have a bad habit of giving the manufacturer a bad name.

well at least they didnt go against the tire manufacturer's recommend tire pressure. i remember reading a article about this where Ford had in there manuals to inflate the tires to 24psi, max, while firestone said 30 something, and Ford's tire pressure rating was too low. you know how the tire's contact patch is flat to the road? well when the tire moves and flexes back in place it makes heat, and the faster it goes, the more heat is made. when the tire is low, it flexes more. well, when that certain tire on the explorer gets to hot, the tire's tread seperates. it was a small part of firestone's faut, but more of fords, becuase if the tires were inflated correctly they wouldn't have that problem. i read it took real low tire pressure, like 16 psi, for the tire to seperate like it did. at least GM didnt knowingly make a mistake like that.

Recalls blow, but at least you get free fixings. Some manufacturers are not very good at alerting dealers about recalls, like Briggs & Stratton for example. If you don't keep your eyes and ears open to the local gossip, you'll never know something is being recalled. No letters, no phone calls or anything from B & S themselves.

Is steering even something that's gm does endurance tests on? I know they do suspension and engine. But i've never heard them use some sort of steering test on a car to see if it'll have any problems down the road...
ah yes, i remember the tire problem. With all the recalls and panic. I never did hear the end of that. Now i know what happened...

the manager of our spray painting section at work order a Holden crewman 2 months ago and is still waitng for it because of a recall
Well remeber Holden is working 3 shifts and they still can't keep with demand and keep good build qaulity, I emant hey have to make 18,000 moanros for AMerican this year, and the crewmand is a different design to the commodre and the wagon is different again and the adventura and the ute and the Statesman and the one tonner so it is a pretty busy line.
Itz better then wat is happening wit Xr's, they are having all osrts of prblems form brake shuders to windows winding down when the central locking is locked. haven't heard ne thig like that from the Holden Australia plant.
No the ls1 problems don't count to me cos they are CANADIAN made.

well I don't care if Holden or Ford are working 3 shifts I pay the sort of money they want for a car now days I expect a good car regardless of what badge is on the front of the bloody thing this day and age is not to much to ask for if both Holden and Ford would stop sacking people and putting in robots they may not have so much trouble a robot is as only as good as the boof head who writes the program for it to work too .
Well to have a 3rdshift logically it would mean to employ more people and not sack any.
I know of on company regretting sacking so amy people cos of te drought, and it is Freight Australia, they didn't actually sack anyone but the government did before they sold it and Freight America (who owns them) moved people around and have put lotz of people on leave but witht he high speed rail project they are strapped for people says my Dad because they can't maintain their normal stuff while keeping demand for the high speed train line thing.
