Video is a 34MB .wmv file.

lap video (http://www.jeffareid.net/cgi-bin/jritcll.wmv)

Total time was 9:22.62, beating Steve by 0:22.10. My guess is that 1:54 per lap is needed, for a total time of 9:30.00. I thought I had to pull sub 1:52 lap times though, shooting for low to mid 1:51.xx, but got a 1:52.14 on 3rd lap, so I pushed a bit at a couple of spots on the 4th, getting a 1:50.67. At 16 seconds ahead on 4th lap, I dropped back to a 1:51.50 for the 5th and final lap.

Since I wanted to make a video of this, so I drove from in-car view. Took a few laps to get use to this view. A couple of blind spots, like the curb on the sharp 90 degree left turn about 2/3rds into the lap, forcing me to turn in late to avoid that annoying 2 inch curb that disturbs the car and reports driver error.

Another annoyance is that downshifting sometimes results in an idling engine. In the video, this happens about 2/3rds into the lap, on the 90 degree left kink. Since I have a single axis for throttle and brake, I have to stop braking and blip the throttle to avoid this idling engine bug. You can hear the engine quickly rev back up again on that kink when I do this. Fortunately, this doesn't seem to get MBWR cars out of shape. (I use 2 joysticks for driiving, left for throttle and brake, right for steer.)

In case you're wondering, CH USB controllers includes a programmable manager, and I programmed upshift button to hold off throttle during for a bit so the shifts sound nice.

Still got a long ways to go in this game, only 1280 km, 67%, and status 10.

Jeff that is a wonderful video you have produced and congrats on that lap time of 1:50:67 AWESOME !!!

Did it take long to get used to driving with manual gears so far I have only used Automatic? (had enough trouble just braking in time)

Can you share with us all how to make a MBWR video?

Sue  :Peace:

Can you share with us all how to make a MBWR video?

My video card has a 2nd output to svideo, which I connect to a mini-dv camcorder. I start recording, then play the game, in this case the Clk (Dmt) to the limit mission, while driving with from an in-car view. Afterwards, I use Pinnacle Studio to transfer the video from the camcorder to an AVI file, via a 1394 interface. Once I have the AVI file, I can edit it and make streaming video files.

By the way, I started another thread about how to save and play back replays. I'd recommend at least saving them for now. MBWR can already show replays, just need a feature to allow some camera angles and to be able to specify file names.

That's the way to do it. :) With a MiniDV camcorder.. I do the same trick occasionally. :)

Did it take long to get used to driving with manual gears?

Maybe an hour or so initially, but it seemed like a week before I quit confusing upshift with downshift. If you use a wheel, the convention is right paddle for upshift, left paddle for downshift.

I started using manual shift back with NFS4 (HIgh Stakes). I like using manual shift for most racing games. With MBWR, downshifting seems to help control speed (slowing down), and turn in (slides the rear end out) during corner entry. The only nuisance is the one I already mentioned, where I have to blip the throttle sometimes to get the engine to rev up from a downshift (it's like MBWR sometimes simulates a one way clutch).

Thanks for the info dear Jeff, I have not got a Digital Camcorder yet!! (Daddieeeeeeeeeeeee you know you love me) ;) but who knows what Father Christmas may bring.

I do use manual gears in PU so I ought really be able to do it for MBWR it's just that I felt a little lazy to start with and I find it really hard to transition back. :yikes:

Happy driving :racer:

Oh Sue, start learning every game with manual, otherwise you do nothing else than to double the "learn-time" because you first have to learn the tracks and then again the gears which you should use best. Start with manual and learn it all at the same time, it works :Peace:

Yeah Sue come on manual is the only way to play :)

Its not so hard as in some cars you only use 3 gears or 4 of the available 6 :D
But its still a lot more shifting than in PU.

Do you use your Pinnacle tools for work?

ARGH!!! I have a DV camcorder, too, and I produce videos in the same way you do (although I abandoned Pinnacle Studio when I switched to WinXP and they wanted another 89€ for an XP compatible version!!! ).

But my camcorder is not able to read from the analog s-video out of the video card...:'( I need a firewire out to record on the DV tape.

Do you have any suggestion in this case? I haven't found any PC video capturing SW that is giving decent results :(

The same is happening with automatic shifting when you brake from a very high to a very low speed...downshift makes the engine idling. Since I'm not using ABS, I thought this was not a bug but a simulation of rear wheel locking.

Luckily I have split axes pedals to fix this, so I can use a bit of gas like in GPL to keep the rear wheels rotating.

I'm not using manual gear, though: expecially upshift is less effective IMHO, there's always a bit more of delay compared to automatic shifting. And for downshifting, with automatic gear you just have to blip on the gas to make the car downshift, in this way I can actually control exactly which gear will be selected and when, in order to make the turn at the optimal speed/traction.

You can also try using fraps (http://www.fraps.com) , it includes a capture to video with sound feature. This should work with any video card, and doesn't need a camcorder.

Pinnacle

I got Pinnacle studio sony version included with the camcorder. I upgraded to full version, but the upgrade is tied into the hard drive serial number. When installing on a new system, I have to set the new hard drive serial number the same as the old. It's possible to also patch the upgrade to use the new serial number, but it's easier for me to patch the boot sector on a hard drive.

Jeff,

I've been using fraps since long, but it's so slow and resource hungry that I can hardly capture at 640x480x16, 10FPS and it's still losing a lot of frames...so you can't synchronize with audio and anyway you can't capture while playing - it would just be impossible for the lag.

About Pinnacle, I've been using P.Studio for years until I installed XP and discovered that I had to upgrade (and pay) to run it under XP....so I'm just using Windows Movie Maker now.
